Katie has the misfortune of seeing just how crazy people can behave when they’re scared and paranoid about a Halloween curse. Will everyone make it through the night or will a bunch of people die for no good reason? Is the curse all in their heads or could it really be true? Praises • OpenDyslexic font and different text sizes available. • “Less Gore” option. • Links attached to people’s names in the credits. Neat! • Striking art style. • Several CGs to collect for CG Gallery. • Several branching paths and endings. • Encourages critical thinking skills. Complaints • The Snowhaven Studios logo animation has to play each time a new playthrough is started. Just a bit annoying. • At least one typo. A great visual novel for Halloween!
I used to be a huge fan of horror genre, I watched every horror film, no matter how good it was, read S.King's, Lovecraft's books... Now for so many years already I watch only anime xD Every ongoing, enjoying horror series as well if possible. So, frankly speaking, my expectations about this game were high, perhaps too high. I thought thoroughly and decided to choose a positive review but I'm not very excited about this novel, unfortunately. My first impressions were quite favorable: enjoyable anime style art, tho chars' eyes seemed too huge. But you know, right now I recollected our Russian proverb--'fear has big eyes' meaning that fear makes you exaggerate the threat. And it suits the story perfectly xD Ok, forget about my complaint. Ahaha Art is amazing! Period xD https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2645786443 For the first time ever in settings I found the opportunity to choose Dyslexic font. I never referred myself to this category of people. I was very curious, so I even made some 'research': read online articles about advantages of such fonts. That was fascinating and educational. Just for that I'm grateful! I compared two options and enjoyed dyslexic font a lot! I wish all games had this feature. So, thank you for: +fully voiced visual novel \o/ Absolutely every voice was pleasant to hear. It always makes my playthroughs so much longer, as I read fast but always, even when replaying, I always listen to the voice actors till the end. +25 endings for a short story is quite amazing! For a short setting there're so many scenarios of deaths. I can't help but applaud the writer's imagination! +achievements. 'Steam is still learning about this game' tho, unfortunately. It means achs aren't shown in the profile yet. But anyway it always feels good to be rewarded for reaching every milestone. +really many choices and enough save slots to be able to save in front of every choice in every playthrough. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2645699719 What I disliked: --my main complaint—the 'spookiest' edition is not spooky, I mean at all :( I was impressed first with the option 'normal/less' gore. Buuut...nothing! I even wrote in 'bug discussion' thinking there must be something wrong with it. Seriously, I double checked replaying a scene with a crashed skull but there was absolutely no difference visually. So why? Why did I have to choose the gore mode absolutely every f time I started the game and, believe me, it happened very many times. I saved before every option replaying it later, it's not like there're 25 endings and it means a player will have 25 playthroughs, no! so many different choices lead to the same endings. So I was choosing 'normal' gore mode again and again and again and again (`□′)╯┴┴ but...nothing changed. It soon began to feel like mockery:( I even thought that what the name of the game meant: expected some horror spooky story?! Ahahaha Not it! Far from it! “evil cackling” https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2645716602 One good thing tho, or maybe not so good xD but the game kindled the yearning in me to play something truly gore, something really spooky. I wonder if I have anything like this in my library or there's a similar novel I haven't bought yet. I need to play smth like this at the first opportunity. Despite my complaint that the story is not scary, I still liked it. It's not the game's fault that I had different expectations, right? xD I expected some supernatural stuff, Halloween curse is mentioned on the store page, so it's not a spoiler. But the most interesting part was about people! Reminded me different social experiments. It was kinda fun to observe that group of people going crazy just because of illogical fear, paranoia and superstitions. Their calm reaction to deaths, corpses just because it's Halloween curse reminded me ppl's calm reaction to capital punishment, killing animals for food when there're so many other sources not including murders... we were told it's ok, it's allowed because... welp, it's law, it's tradition, we were said it's fine in such circumstances... It's kinda scarier than any ghosts, zombies, demons and other supernatural stuff. --no steam guide yet. The game may be finished just in a couple of hours buuuut I was replaying every possible choice and it took more time than it should xD Tho I admit this challenging part felt also rewarding. I managed to do everything myself! It may seem stupid I'm so happy about that as the game is short but, you know, with so many choices the storyline splits up in so many paths and they split up in so many branches that it's easy to get lost. --saw 2 typos, plus the written and pronounced texts differed slightly sometimes. Maybe it's nitpicking but ideally they should totally match, right? --skipping is annoyingly long because every time the story ended I had to look at the sloooowly disappearing studio logo, soon I sincerely started to hate that street lantern, why, what for did you do that?! I couldn't even minimize the game and wait for the main menu to load, no! I had to watch that. Add that gore mode every time too. I think they gonna remain in my memory more than the story itself. So tedious :( --no idea why but I had to double click often to proceed with the text, quite often the game didn't respond to my clicking at all. So, the game is a nice read for a couple of hours, especially when the guide appears. Don't expect anything spooky. Or maybe it's just me xD Maybe I'm not that easy to frighten XD because seriously for me it was mainly a cute story with relaxing art-style. I still recommend to give it a try and see for yourself.
Wherever uneasiness resides, it creates vulnerability. The caused exposure towards terror and paranoia will spread matching to an infection; thus offering space to a newly created familiar-yet-distorted reality.
TW: gore, blood, violence
Game's premise:
You play as Katie, a young woman who just happened to move to Easthollow – a peaceful town where she decided to start anew, after finding herself a nice house at an affordable price. Also, it’s Halloween! Our protagonist does enjoy this festivity a lot and is looking forward to seeing the decorations and Halloween costumes all around, but… hey?! Why is no one from the neighbourhood around? After looking around for a while she encounters the Mayor of the town whom recounts her about an urgent evacuation taking place – in fact most of the residents did already move out in order to stay safe for the night.
A town where Halloween is abolished:
Turns out that the town is under a powerful curse, manifesting during each Halloween of the year, which is the reason why all the residents are forced to leave the town for the stated festivity. From the few gathered information Katie managed to acquire from the Mayor, it appears that a murder did take place in the newly explored town. It happened many centuries ago during Halloween’s Eve and the enraged spirit of the murdered man comes back each year, to bring upon his vengeful curse upon the residents. While trying to gather more information and possible proof, Katie stumbles upon a group of residents who did not manage to leave the town yet – be it due to their work shifts or other problematic errands.
Does the curse exist or are we simply blaming the coincidences?
After agreeing upon leaving the town together, things began to take a very strange turn… The newly created situation subsequent to odd circumstances and a noticeable dose of bad luck, causes them to be forced to spend a night at the town together… While of course making some of the group frightened associating the turnaround to a curse. With passing time the tension among the group increases, making their built up fears take over them. This creates even more doubts coming to each other; forming accusations towards the bystander who may be the killer of the upcoming night…
Featurings:
This is a choice-based Visual Novel presenting an atmospheric setting and a vast variety of endings. A very interesting choice of story-pacing presenting a drastic change from the main character willing to experience a new environment during her favourite festivity mutating to a survival horror type of setting. While some choices may appear to be less important or completely inconsequential, this game presents many unlockable CGs and different endings will be presented. The cartoonish art-style is very appealing and blends perfectly with the quality voice acting being featured during dialogues. A slight negative note however, is that the voices’ volume happens to be low compared to the BGM, and, while there is an option in the menu’s settings to increase the voice volume it did not work when I personally tried altering the levels a bit. At the beginning of the game there is the possibility of having default gore scenes, or scenes with less gory details displayed, based on player’s preferences. And of course there will also be a handful of dead ends, which I personally did find entertaining as well. The game is very atmospheric overall, as well as eerie; mainly given the uneasiness of the displayed setting.
Overall:
This title is recommended if you are looking for a short horror Visual Novel featuring a Halloween setting. Not recommended if you are looking for anime-styled design and a Visual Novel involving romance scenes. I quite enjoyed reading through this as it has some interesting psychological ideas thrown around which I can always enjoy. Its also a game that wants to to read through it multiple times as there are quite a few different endings. I read through two different ones as the second one was one where nobody died and I felt like stopping at a good point, I also feel like reading through all of them wont really add all that much to the experience. Reading through one good playthrough is pretty much enough. Considering that one playthrough probably wont even take you 30 minutes I felt like the price is a little high. Since I liked reading through it though and the game has pretty nice art and voice acting for every character I can accept that the price is probably fair as the dev also has to get his money back and get some extra as well of course. Overall a pretty nice experience that isnt scary or disturbing so basically everyone can play it and it was much more interesting to think about if the curse was real or people just acted on paranoia and being scared. I came for the art everything else sucked me in! So this game caught my eye with its striking art and character designs I don’t normally play visual novels but as I played this game I was sucked into its excellent writing and well made characters the cast is small but they do so much with them and the games setting they bring you into their world at the start and make you want to stay with the writing and you’ll want to experience every path the game has to offer I got the “true” end by mistake and it just made me hungry for more this is the perfect Halloween game and the developers should be so proud of what they’ve made I can’t wait to see what they create next because Not it has become my yearly Halloween tradition
Spooooky. Perfect game for Halloween.
Just finished a live playthrough on Twitch. It's the type of game where if you play it once and get one ending, you can play it again and again to get different options. I did this and got a few outcomes. I won't spoil what they are, but I'll say I got a few that felt unsatisfying and one that felt like "winning" (even though this is very much a game that you don't really "win"). The art is gorgeous and the story is pretty entertaining on a first or second run. Would I play a sequel? Probably not unless it was free. It felt devoid of suspense a lot of the time, and some of the outcomes seemed a little dramatic with less than realistic reactions (one word...repercussions? Characters didn't seem to face 'em). It's also very short. I'm not mad about my purchase--it was only $5 USD after all...but I don't know that I'd emphatically recommend. Something to check out if you REALLY enjoy text-based choose your story games.
I'm not a huge visual novel player, but I had played the original gamejam version before and this new release is a great reason to revisit. The art is as fantastic as it was before and the voice acting is great across the board, which makes repeat playthroughs feel much more worthwhile just to hear the delivery. The mystery was fun to work out, as is trying to manipulate the story to try and get specific outcomes.
Nice VN with voice acting and multiple choices and endings. It is very good!
It's a pretty short game. My first time I finished it within 20 minutes, with 90% of the time spent just getting the background and not really progressing the story/making choices. There was literally no gore that I experienced on "normal gore". I really wanted to like it, and the story had potential, but I think it was just very short and not enough to give you an actual opinion on characters. I made one seemingly mundane choice which ultimately led to a crazy outcome which I felt like didn't even give me an option to prevent it. If it were longer and had more depth I would love it! Just not for me. If you like really quick stories, then perhaps you will enjoy it.
