As a fan of old PS2 horror games, when I saw a TikTok about Signed Mary, I wishlisted it straight away. It's a short experience at about an hour long, but it's a nice love letter to the retro horror and visual novel genre, especially Silent Hill 2. The music is eerie, the art and visuals are great and it captures the spooky atmosphere of old games really well. In my opinion, the story and writing were a little bit on the nose, I could guess where it was going immediately. Overall, I would recommend playing Signed Mary, it's an enjoyable game and it's definitely worth the price. I can tell that a lot of passion and care went into this game, and I'm excited to see what the developer does next!
I only wish I realized that this used generative AI before purchasing it, but that's on me. I don't recommend it for that reason, however it is still a good game, and if AI is not a deal breaker and you like VNs and Silent Hill you should give it a shot. 6/10.
I'm still not used to having to scour the store page of every game I'm interested in for whether or not they use the plagiarism machine. Unfortunately I only found out this game uses genAI after I bought it. I can't in good conscience recommend it, regardless of how little they may have used it. To create art for a game only to use something so unethical as genAI which steals other people's art is unthinkable to me. Even if no stolen art was used in this particular game, the usage itself is still destroying the world in more ways than one. ALL genAI is unethical until made with consent, credit and compensation. It looks like an interesting story with nice psychological horror vibes, and I'm sure a lot of love was put into it. So it's quite sad, and I say all this with a heavy heart, but there are millions of artists, graphic designers, editors and photographers who would have happily lent their skills. Even free stock photos and video editing software supports someone and is still affordable. You can still create an uncanny vibe through art design. I'm sorry for the harsh review but I truly hope I never have to see another promising developer choose this path and that a lesson is taken from it. Don't choose the easy way or we all forget to challenge ourselves and we will never improve. To quote someone smarter than me: "Why should I bother playing what the developer didn't bother making?"
I dont normally do alot of detailed reviews but i seen this game on tiktok and decided to wishlist it!
Genre
Ein Psycholigisches Horror Visual Novel
Story
Fazit
What I expected to be a simple VN with a fun aesthetic actually turned out to be very impressionate and well-written! Despite the short length and strong influences of other fictional works, the writing manages to delve deeply into the characterizations and psychological themes while maintaining a good pacing and forging its own style in a way. No idea how this game does it, but the ambience actually managed to unsettle me oddly much, it's very immersive and haunting! In particular the soundtrack stands out, plus the visual presentation is lovely and holds a creepily-pleasant nostalgic vibe. The plot may be rather predictable but conveys its messages neatly and with clear directions. Most of the story including details felt so realistic and even relatable, I wasn't expecting it to hit so close home lmao, that made me stress even more while playing. The only part I'm rather displeased with is the AI usage for some background modifications, considering it shouldn't have been difficult to achieve similar result by playing around with filters - even feels nearly comical, considering that art as a method of self expression is a relevant theme here - but at least it seems to be subtle use only lol.. That aside I definitely enjoyed this, it was a very captivating experience that deals with with various profound themes by skillfully combining them with an eerie setting and a dreadful atmosphere!
A real psychological survival horror novel [Eng and Pt-BR review]
Signed Mary is a good game. I found it cause I always watch the novels that are being released and, when I saw the game's visuals and plot, I was really interested and wanted to give it a try. Signed Mary makes it very clear that it is inspired by Silent Hill 2, but honestly, the game does not abuse this inspiration in a bad way. The story develops a very complex character in parallel to its inspirations, Loraine is an excellent complex character and her development is masterfully carried out. The writing at the beginning of the game seemed a bit amateurish to me with short sentences and an excess of verbs, but I can't decide if this improved throughout the game or if the plot captured me better, but I would say, this isn't really a problem. The game's plot is very direct in a way that instigates the player to want to know the ending, it is like a sickly nostalgic mental race. I had a great time while playing. The game's visuals are honestly good, the character design has a good nostalgic energy of horror games of the 2000s and, I am happy that the developer followed this look and not the more anime look, as revealed in the post-game comments (which, by the way, I loved!). Of course, I feel that the developer could have tried to create more sprites for the characters, perhaps at least more facial expressions, but at least we have one beautiful sprite for each character. The OST is also good, it captures that nostalgic energy of the time very well, but I must say that the music is too loud compared to the other sound effects (but you can lower the volume in the menu) and, my problem with the OST is that some tracks have a very poorly marked loop, generating an abrupt break that disturbs the immersion, it would be interesting if the developer's future songs were worked on to have a better loop. The game uses real photos as background, edited with AI tools to generate an environment that matches the energy of the game, which I think is a very good idea! This allowed the game to have a lot of background art with a very cool look, which compensates for the fact that the characters only have one sprite. I understand the effects that were used in the images, but the effect used on the dry trees could be softer at the edges, the point where it starts is very marked and looks a bit strange. There is one or another jumpscare in the game and I must say that I found it a bit forced, breaking the pace of the game a bit. For a moment I thought the game was going to follow a more creepypasta theme, but I'm thankful that wasn't the case, but I still think that the jumpscares, as they were done, worked against the game. The voice acting is ok, a bit sparse, mostly reserved for the letters, which is ok, but the very realistic voice acting in the vomit (and repeated so many times throughout the game) wasn't something I enjoyed hearing. Overall, I was very happy with this game! It's incredible how the developer managed to create such cool characters and a unique plot while paying homage to Silent Hill 2 (among others). It really is like a survival horror with psychological themes in the form of a novel and I loved the entire OST and nostalgic visuals. I also loved the post-game commentary, while themes of this type usually leave interpretation to the player, the developer's observations were very good and made this game stay strongly engraved in my mind, as well as all the concept art, following its evolution was very interesting in the end. I recommend it to all fans of survival horror and novels!

It's a short and spooky mystery about self discovery and coming to terms with your traumatic past. This is one of those unreliable narrator tropes in which our MC Loraine is pretty depressed about something and oozing with guilt about her past for her parents. Although it's pretty rough around the edges, the twist was predictable and the voice acting was pretty robotic; it felt atmospheric and I couldn't help but sympathize with Loraine and Mary. You could tell the dev was inspired by Silent Hill and\or Alice in Wonderland. The story is good but it just needs a little more polishing.
This game keeps you hooked so horrifying yet beautiful, going deeper into the story wanting to know more, subtle silent hill things here and there I loved it all, definitely deserves way more attention. The images the story the music all of it was amazing.
