During my search for hidden gems in the horror walking simulator genre, I’ve played some really good games, I’ve played some average games and I’ve played some bad games. What makes a good horror walking simulator, first and foremost its the atmosphere, you have to believe that you’re actually in a haunted place, whether it be house, hospital, graveyard or whatever, you have to be somewhat unnerved, hearing creepy sounds, seeing strange flashes of light, having the limited lighting sources randomly blow out while the tiny sliver of light you have flickers and you’re pondering what creepy crawly nasty will come for you next or what lies behind that next corner. Siberian Experiment cost .99 cent, so I’m not going to be too hard on the game. The fact that it has the same exact unedited stage I just played in another game “You Must” was only a minor issue, when I was playing the game and trying to enjoy it, then got stuck on a piece of terrain that wasn’t only minor, it required a complete restart of the game... Reused unity assets or not, that is kind of inexcusable. The awesome looking trailer in the steam page, and the camera footage at the start had me really stoked for this budget game having some real potential. Unfortunately, the game kind of failed to deliver. The Story – The store page says you’re in an abandoned military barracks, where experiments were done to try and create the perfect soldier. You need to solve puzzles and gather evidence while avoiding traps left the creature left behind… or something... Gameplay – Wander around a darkened area and hope you can figure out what to do. Get frustrated after five minutes and turn on the one video on YouTube with a walkthrough of the game. Follow walkthrough, get stuck on terrain because the game glitched up and the fuse you needed to pick up gets stuck in a corner. Then when you finally recover it, you get stuck on terrain. AWESOME. The typical walking simulator fair, you move around, you pick up items and notes and you try to solve puzzles… while watching the Youtube video because the game is far too dark and far too buggy to actually solve them by yourself. Pro’s Cheap, under a buck Fairly easy 100%, although without counting toward profile % Interesting concept, poor execution Get a +1 for the steam store trailer Con’s Numerous bugs and glitches, including game breaking terrain issues Reused unity assets (not a huge deal if the game is executed correctly) Entirely too dark, even when you turn up the gamma, and turn on the lights Frustrating to play with the numerous bugs and glitches Recommendation - I’m normally not too hard on budget games, I mean after all most of them are just learning projects for the developer. If the game holds up and is decent, or I see the effort the developers put in I’ll overlook a lot of potentially bad things. Like stock unity assets, BUT the game has to actually be good, it has to have a cohesive flow and bugs should honestly be at a minimum. I can see that A LOT of work went into putting that trailer together, but unfortunately not as much went into making the game. If the game some how manages to get out of limited profile mode, I’ll likely replay it for the 100%, but considering the state of the game currently I can’t recommend it. ALTHOUGH, for 99 cent, it might be worth a pick up just for the creepy girl rolling around, but not much else..
trash
I really love these indie games, but this one is basically taking templates and smashing them together. Everything from the cut and paste environment to the Horror FPS kit. The 2D volume really needs work since the music plays like a soundtrack. Get the intense chase music right in the beginning when you're just trying to find a light. Footstep sounds are generic and don't change on different surfaces, even the door sounds are template sounds. Again, I really wanted to like this to support indie devs, but there is no heart or soul in this. It's slightly modifying templated events to add a story. Overall, not impressed.
You're just a legend, I've never seen such a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ great gameplay in any horror game. The assets are definitely not taken from the unreal engine free store, you can see the entire budget went to the trailer for the game Just a legend,10/10
