This is a not so exciting typing game where you type the words that show up without errors so that you can stop an onslaught of enemies trying to take down your castle. There is no collective statistics or anything about your own typing speed/accuracy. The gameplay is bland and the same words keep repeating. Even for $0.99 I was looking for something much more than a basic flash-looking game that has no complexity. Aside from typing the words, you can use the money you get to upgrade the castle, repair the castle, fire off cannons, or to slow down time temporarily. There is only one difficulty level though, and so if you get stuck on a particular wave, expect to be stuck there in the future. The game's store page notes that it is casual and strategy genres aside from typing. I think for someone learning to type, this is too difficult, especially mid-late game. For someone who is a very skilled typist, there is no challenge or variation. If you are looking for a typing game, you should go look elsewhere. There are a lot of others that are more fun and exciting.
"Type Defense brings a brand new approach to all typing games. You have to stop desert bandits by firing with your ballista. Everyone knows the best way of using a ballista is typing! And it supports multiple languages!" Well, no, but still it's a great game! This is definitely no brand new approach - I've played at least a dozen games in which you had to type words that randomly come on-screen in order to defeat enemies, but who cares? It's awesome! And yea - the multiple language support is great, unfortunately I can't type in my native tongue.. but you can choose between entire vocabularies of English, German, Spanish, Portuguese and Turkish. And Russian too. The game is made with the Unity engine and overall is quite simple - you'll play as a castle defended by a ballista, and you'll have words (starting from 3 letters onwards) on the upper part of the screen. Typing those words before the timer runs out (there's a white bar for each word) will shoot towards the targeted enemies that will come from the left part of the screen. The enemies drop automatically-collected gold, and it will be used to repair your castle, to upgrade it or to activate two power-ups, namely a bomb (you can imagine what it does..) and a slow timer. So.. the only thing I won in my entire life was an European typing competition, since it happens that I can type quite fast (hence the wall of texts I write even in English, which is definitely a language I don't like xD), and I really think that this game could not only entertain the casual gamer, but also help the gamer to learn new words and to improve his typing skills. You have, of course, to be fast since enemies will come in waves and the game has all the details needed not to be boring - timers telling you which wave is coming, targets on the closest enemies, information about how many enemies are on-screen and, so, if you need to keep on typing or if you have to wait some time. This game comes for less than 1$/€ and I'd definitely suggest it to everyone - for the price it offers, even if the game is extremely minimalistic (you can't save, you'll have just to start every time from the beginning although the game gets fast in a few minutes and you'll have very few boring instants with the simplest word to pass!) it still is funny with all the desert enemies, elephants and so on.. and of course there's, at least, a pause button! For its price it's definitely recommended to anyone, it's great to improve your typing skills and it's also great for kids - the indie graphical compartment is definitely nice for this price, so that it doesn't get boring since I played many typing games involving only Times New Roman words.. :) Have fun! Details added after completion: - it takes about 30 minutes to get both 250.000 points and level 75, I reached 250.000 points at level 68-69 as you can see in my screenshots - if you do everything right and you're good at typing, by level 50 you'll have plenty of gold (upgrade the castle only 2 times - that's the maximum) and you'll be able to use a single bomb to kill an entire wave - all the achievements will unlock upon closing the game

You are in charge of a castle, and your archers eagerly await correct inputs to be able to shoot the incoming waves of enemies - the bigger the enemy, the longer the words, the more arrows it takes. The game allows you to use gold, gained from slaying enemies for a few things: Repairing your castle, upgrading it (increasing base health and repair speed), ordering in bombs that clear all on screen enemies or slowing down their overall pace. There is also another use for gold, the option to buy a "last defense" to keep on playing even after a game over. Gameplay: There is not too much to do right or wrong when it comes to a typing game, but there still are a few points worth getting into; The game is very short lived, as it's lacking difficulty - I got all 36 achievements on my first run. A sense of progression in either difficulty or upgrades is generally good to mix up the typing experience, the issue is that it lacks on both those ends. There are only two castle upgrades, which I got within the first 5-10 minutes. The enemy variety also fails to cover a wide range. Visually the game goes in a good direction, but since every word you will have to type appears at the same position at the top of your screen, there rarely (if ever) is the need to look anywhere else, once you know your 2-3 shortcuts. This could easily have been solved, by the words appearing above the enemy sprites. There also is a lot of repetition in the words you type, even within the first minutes of gameplay. One final issue I wish to address is the "last defense" option. In the game over screen, you have the option to purchase a "last defense" option for 300 gold, which puts your castle back to 50% hp and wipes the map of all enemies. As a reference, on wave 76, when I let myself die for one of the achievements, I was sitting on 9200 gold. After I used my "last defense" I was sitting on ~9250. Bombed enemies still drop gold. And that lead to me noticing, that I can just endlessly go on, by just using "last defense", since it can be used any number of times in a run. Conclusion: While the game offers the basic typing game experience, it ends up lacking in many ways. I can't even recommend the game for the cheap 0.99, for it has been outdone by free browsergames in the same genre, even visually. Unless you want to bolster your Steam library, I do not recommend the game. 2/10
Basic typing game with little challenge for a proficient typist.
Not much else to say: you kill the enemies by typing the word right. If you make a mistake, a new word appears seemingly without other punishment. Words are anywhere from 3 to 8 letters in length, mostly middle of the keyboard (in English anyway), so it's beginner-to-maybe-intermediate level of typing. You might need to hurry with some of the larger waves. However, there's a couple power-ups (slow-down and kill-all) that render the random harder waves trivial. There's no shortage of gold to use the power-ups either. In between hard waves there are easy ones. Unfortunately, there's no calling waves early so I often had to wait bored for several seconds before the next wave.
Bland and easy-breezy
Achievements pop up only after quitting the game. All can be acquired by playing one marathon session of 45 minutes or so. Maybe it would be better if you were a beginner typist. Nevertheless, you've seen everything the game has to offer after 15 waves: the few different enemy skins that come afterwards aren't that exhilarating, especially since the elephants' sounds are irritating. But for 100%, you need to play to at least wave 75. ~Twistorian Curator~
Progresses too quickly from easy to difficult to be educational or fun
Y'know what, it's not bad. I got this at 0.64p and unlocked every achievement in 47 minutes. I bought it expressly because I am an extremely fast typist, and I knew I'd be good at it. After Wave 100 (probably earlier, to be fair) nothing else changes, and it's the same thing again and again. I've noticed a few people mention it's not that good for learning typing, but I'd disagree somewhat; I would find that this would help anyone who has an average speed (40-50WPM) get up to a decent speed (around about 90WPM). I doubt it would allow one-finger typists to learn, nor would it allow a decent typist to get up to my speed, as the enemy waves are just not fast enough - that being said, I type upwards of 130WPM, and that's way overkill for just about anybody. I'd absolutely recommend this for even the full price of 0.99p - it's an easy achievement set for those so inclined, and it's a nice little time passer for those who just want to type.
This game is badly balanced. If you manage to get past the most difficult parts around wave 15, the game gets easier again. Killed enemies give more gold as you progress, while the price of screen nukes stays the same. Since enemies killed by screen nukes drop money as well, it will start paying for itself. The last achievement is for beating wave 75, after wave 100 I stopped typing to see how far I could go. At 150 (with only nukes and occasional repairs) I stopped since my gold reserves slowly grew, there is no end once you made it over the one hill. If you are an achievement hunter and decent at typing (blind and slightly fast), this is an easy 100%. Otherwise I can't recommend this game due to the balancing and a few other problems (limited dictionaries with abbreviations that are awkward to type, tons of repeats, bad choices for line breaks and font scaling).
Typing practice, the game. Yes, it's as simple as the screenshots look. You are just typing the words on screen and the combat is automated based on your typing speed and accuracy. You have a couple of special powers to spend gold to get through tough spots, but the point of the game is to practice your typing skills. It's an interesting gimmick for $1 or less. --- While you are here, would you consider following my curator page? Want to read all of my reviews and not just the curated ones?
