■Story
“168 remaining until the end of the world...”
Humanity is approaching its end.
In a world steeped in despair and chaos, a strange religious organization called Shuten Order emerges, yearning for the end of humanity. The group rapidly gains followers, eventually forming a small nation state called Shuten.
Tragedy strikes during the grand festival celebrating their nation’s founding—the leader of the Shuten Order is murdered. Soon after, the protagonist awakens with no memory, greeted by two self-proclaimed "angels". They reveal a shocking truth: the protagonist is the murdered Founder, revived by divine power. However, the resurrection is incomplete—their memories are gone, and their life limited to a mere four days.
To survive, the protagonist must overcome "God's trial": identify and kill their murderer.
With the clock ticking, the protagonist, given the alias Rei, dives into the tumultuous city as a detective. The suspects? Five ministers of the Shuten Order. There's no time to investigate them all. Choices must be made, and the pursuit of truth demands sacrifice.
Who killed the Founder? For what reason? Can the mission be fulfilled before time runs out?
Thus begins a high-stakes, four-day hunt for the truth.

This game is definitely a little rough around the edges sometimes, but if you can manage to get past the occasional lack of polish it's a fantastic story with some great character writing, world building, mystery, art style, and some of the coolest plot twists I've seen in a game so far Cant recommend enough to anyone who is a fan of Kodaka's other work, or someone just looking for a new and creative VN to play
I was a bit nervous about getting this game, initially. It was the translation/localization stuff that made me hesitate, really. However, I am SO glad I decided to go ahead and get it. Hundred Line is my absolute favorite game, so when I learned that this game dove more deeply into the route-based genre shifts, my interest was piqued. The Routes: Gameplay-wise, I had a blast with the routes I wasn't expecting to, and vice versa. My play order was thus: Security, Education, Health, Justice, and Science. After 100% completion, I'm happy with that choice order and I don't think I'd do it differently. I figured I'd like Teko and Inugami the best, so I saved their routes for last. Story-wise, I am so so glad I did. I was expecting the stealth gameplay of the Security route to be annoying and time-consuming, yet it was actually pretty fun. It was fairly simple and straightforward, yet it still had some stakes. The story was good and I felt I got everything out of it that I could/should have. I was nervous about Manji at first, but she grew on me after a while. The Education route was probably the most frustrating, mostly because I wasn't a fan of the characters introduced in this route. The intention seemed to be to exaggerate dating sim tropes, and that's not so much my style. I don't necessarily think it was badly written/executed, but it just wasn't my thing. Honoka also generally just pisses me off, too lol. The Health route was something else. Not at all what I was expecting, but it was still pretty fun. I enjoyed the characters introduced here, and I wish a few of them got just a little more exposition, but I understand why they didn't. Yugen was... also something else. Again, not at ALL what I was expecting out of his character, but not in a bad way. The Justice route was a blast. Inugami is absolutely my second favorite character here and for good reason. He's literally just... a more self-aware, humorous, drug-addled Sherlock-type character. I also have a soft spot for his voice actor (Daisuke Ono, who put on a killer performance), so that contributes. It was also a murder mystery type genre shift, which I also adore. It was executed exceptionally well! I just wish it lasted longer... The Science route, story-wise, was probably my favorite, at least up until
Dr. Ezaki
was introduced. I didn't care for that particular character all that much and their story was honestly kind of irritating. The format of this route was fun, but I do have a MAJOR gripe about it. Usually, in multi-route visual novel games, you can just go back and revisit specific parts to get new branches, endings, etc. Not so in this game. Lets say you have a scenario that has 2 potential branches, then each of those 2 branches each have 2 more. In order to get ALL of the corresponding branches, you need to go back to the first scenario that begins that set of branches. That can be irritating, especially when ALL character stories in this route unlock piece by piece as you complete them. It can make it very frustrating, especially if you want to unlock all of the dialogue options (which isn't necessary, I'm just a freak I guess lol). Teko and the overarching story of this route made up for the frustrating parts, I think. I very much enjoyed Teko's character arc and his overall character (design, voice, role in the story, etc.). My only complaint about him as a character is it was kind of upsetting to find out that he didn't play as much of a role in the final chapter as I thought he probably should based on the story beats revealed in the Science route. Final chapter: My biggest gripe for this game lies in this area of the story. Just a warning, when you start this portion, be aware that you WILL NOT BE ABLE TO MANUALLY SAVE for the entire thing. It took around 3 hours or so for me to get through this chapter (I didn't skip any dialogue and didn't take any breaks during that time, so it should be fairly representative), so do with that info what you will. If you are seeking completion of both endings, you will need to get through that whole thing again. But, I timed it out while I got the second ending (again, no breaks, but I also skipped all of the dialogue I had gotten through during my first ending) and it took roughly 30-45 min or so. Not bad, but still irritating. I LOATHE backtracking. Endings: I found both endings to be interesting and appropriate in their own right.
The droid ending was my first and it felt like the most appropriate choice, given the story and characters. I was a bit annoyed that Rei still decided to go and look for the remaining humans, though. It made sense though for her character, so I wasn't upset, per se. It's just not what I would have done in that scenario. The human ending was actually interesting and nothing like I was expecting. It was sad, but at the same time, uplifting almost? The angels were so frustrating the entire time, and I'm pissed that we let them win with this ending. But at least both were well written, I suppose. Something I didn't care for though was Rei seemingly being in love with Manji. It felt strange because, sure, they met fairly early on, but Rei knew Teko the longest. It would have made more sense for them to have ended up together instead. But I can get why they didn't go that way because Teko looks like a child lol so I can see how that would cause issues. To be honest, the romantic part in general felt a little weird. Having Rei end up not romantically interested anyone and going out to explore with ALL of the ministers makes more sense, in my mind.
Verdict: Shuten Order was a very fun ride. It's definitely not my favorite game, but it's in my top 5 for sure. I do think the game is worth the price tag, but I did get it on sale, so I can't really argue for or against on that point. I did find myself able to accurately predict certain heavy plot points fairly early on, but the way the game was formatted, I didn't feel bored or annoyed by that at all. It just made it even more interesting to see the characters get to those answers themselves. The localization issue that I was worried about didn't seem to be all that much of an issue. I can read something that maybe wasn't localized all that well and be able to put it into my own words, or at least fairly accurately guess where the writing was trying to go. If you have anything roughly above a 12th grade reading level, you can do this too.
