It’s like a Tim Burton version of Shady part of me. My wife’s boyfriend describes as it Alice madness return mixed with Limbo. Only few games are captivating to the point of making me to want to finish it in one go. The atmosphere of Tandem was just so wonderful, the main concept so inventive and discovering each new universe brought me so much satisfaction I couldn’t stop playing. The game is a visual marvel, I was immediately in love with the artstyle! The idea of having a character create new pathways and possibilities for another character through something as simple as casting shadows is very clever, and it made for very interesting puzzles and gameplay. The game has a very creepy yet charming atmosphere with its colors and music. It feels like a spooky game for a younger audience, sort of like Medievil for the PS One. Yes one of the main characters dress it's such a ridiculously exaggerated umbrella, she would fit better as a character in Courage the cowardly dog, but it still fits thematically with the rest. Tandem is a 2D puzzler platformer holding a dark atmosphere for its journey. How the game differs from other puzzle platformers is you play as two characters. With the ability to change characters you change perspectives from a top-down to side scroller to work together to solve the level puzzle. You will need to change in order to progress each character and reach the goal. There are about 5 world with 45 levels in total. Each level can take on average 10 mins to finish, with the later levels taking longer and some of them being real head scratchers. The story is sadly a bit lack luster, but it goes from 0 to 100 pretty damn fast. The main character first walks out on the streets to solve a mystery when suddenly a random teddybear falls out of a car, and things move on very fast from there. In the next scene she knows the name of the bear and acts like they been friends forever lol. At its core you’re here mostly for the puzzles and the atmosphere. If you like action and running 'n gunning, then this one may not be for you. This is more of a "push, pull, and aim things while switching back and forth between two characters and avoiding enemies until you forge a path to the exit" type of game. If you like puzzles that are challenging but not frustratingly difficult... if you like gameplay that doesn't make the veins pop out on your neck... and, most of all, if you like gorgeous graphics and music in the French style, with the aesthetics that feel like a cross between Little Nightmares and Shady Part of Me, then this could be right up your alley. I highly recommend it if you’re looking for something light to challenge yourself, and it’s specially worth it during a sale. 7/10

Emma’s top-down world and Fenton’s 2D side-scrolling environment are intertwined, with light and shadow being the key to progressing. The mechanics are well-implemented, but the puzzles can become repetitive as the objectives remain largely the same across levels. The game’s world design is imaginative, with each region bringing something visually new and interesting. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3310229794
🏆 Completion:
Not a difficult game to complete, but it does have several achievements that can be missed each level, but with a guide, you can easily find and get to the ones you missed. Hours to fully complete the game: 8 Achievements: 24/24 Playthroughs: 1 Difficulty: 3/10 Steam Hunter Points: ✪ 4,063
🏞 Visuals & Presentation:
Visually, the game excels with its dark Victorian atmosphere. The environments are rich with detail, and the animations are generally smooth, though some minor bugs detract from the overall experience. Cutscenes have stutter both on Steam Deck and PC. The art style fits the eerie, fairy-tale vibe perfectly, enhancing the game’s mood. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3310229684
🔊 Sound & Voice-Acting:
The sound design is atmospheric, with subtle music and well-crafted sound effects that deepen the immersion. Unfortunately, the voice acting falls flat. Emma’s lines lack emotion and feel stilted, making it hard to connect with the story.
📖 Story & Writing:
The narrative is one of the game’s weaker aspects. While the premise is intriguing, the delivery is lacking. The story doesn’t build much tension, and the voice acting does little to elevate it. The plot feels like an afterthought, serving more as a backdrop for the puzzles. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3310229608
🧵 Length & Difficulty:
The game offers 5-8 hours of content, with some challenging puzzles toward the end. The difficulty is balanced, offering a satisfying progression curve. However, once you’ve seen the core mechanics, the novelty wears off quickly, reducing the replayability.
⭕️ Verdict:
Tandem: A Tale of Shadows delivers a unique puzzle experience with inventive mechanics and a strong atmosphere. However, its repetitive gameplay, lackluster story, and stutter bugs prevent it from reaching its full potential. It’s a good pick for fans of puzzle-platformers, but might be better enjoyed during a sale.
When you're asked about a puzzle game where you play as a little girl with an imaginary friend that can travel through shadows, which game fitting the concept comes to mind? Surprisingly many options fit that description! "Tandem: A Tale of Shadows (2021)" "Shady Part of Me (2020)" "Contrast (2013)" A few other lesser examples are: "In My Shadow (2021)" and the short "Iris.Fall (2018)". "Tandem" is an underrated hidden indie gem! Don't get fooled by the childish and whimsical aesthetic, it is actually a decent puzzle game! You switch between 3D and 2D when changing protagonists to enter shadows, same as in "Contrast" or "Shady Part of Me". But in Tandem, you have a full top down view which allows for a variety of different puzzles. The game is fairly short but offers 5 unique chapters with growing difficulty which was appreciated! (unlike Contrast...) The Pixar-esque visuals and lack of narrative are not important. I repeat, THEY ARE NOT IMPORTANT sometimes! All that is just coat of paint, what matters are the puzzles! Same as engines in cars are far more important that its color.. If you look past that, you get a very good game. The ending of the story was a very nice touch. Like a German fairy tale. Someone said sequel baiting? Bruh, this is a one-and-done. it ain't getting a sequel or happy ending. Very nice game! If you like and want more, try out "Shady Part of Me"
7.5/10 + works on windows 7 + puzzles + art syle + music + price 10$
I groaned when I started and realized this is a game played in three dimensions but as I progressed and got the hang of it, I had a lot of fun. Colorful, creative graphics and an interesting storyline. The bad guys are really cool too. The only bummer is the morbid ending. A nicely thought out game.
Ended up really liking this one, I started playing it as a filler game not knowing what else I wanted to play at the moment and I was impressed with how much I liked this puzzle game! I never found myself bored or frustrated, loved how at times it randomly reminded me of Alice Madness Returns and the ending??? wasn't expecting such a dark ending!! Oof!
