At some point, it might be good. Not wowed by this at all. Perhaps because we waited so long for a CoH successor, but ah well. If Im paying for a game I need to be drawn in, tell my wife I'm going away for a bit, and turn everything else off. Sorry not feeling it. Graphics, movement, combat all are lacking basics. Even the environments are just ...meh. While I don't HATE the game perse... Just not getting the "I'm gonna play the S**T out of this game vibe...yah know? I'll check back in a while. Good luck to you all and enjoy if you can!
Okay I bought this just to see how bad it was. I didn’t even make it out of the starting area. Movement is very horrible to get around in my opinion. Plus it took forever to load. Honestly didn’t even bother with anything else to look at in the game. I just logged out and said forget it. I can handle certain things with no problem but movement is definitely one of my big points for any game. And this game doesn’t have it at all. So definitely not worth it.
My New Year's resolution is to have the guts of the developers how put out this game and thought they could charge real money for it. Seriously, am I on the Alpha test server for this game? It is empty, the most I've seen is 3 people. Not 30, not physically seen, 3 people total in the zone. The graphics stink, the targeting system is woeful, the voice actors sound like they handed a script to someone on the street to just read, the missions are far to few and painfully boring. It was obvious that this was never play tested or if it was they did, never listened to the feedback.
Sad face
I gave the game an honest chance. Repurchased it. Tried it again. Leveled to 20 in less than 20 hours.. I must've submitted at least 8 or 9 bug reports in just the last day before I submitted my review. Mainly bugs that stop mission progression. Edit: The developer fixed most of the bugs just days after posting this review. Mainly crafting is now working. Your character never changes. I feel the same at lvl 20 as I did at lvl 1, minus some additional abilities. The only thing that improves with each level is your health. Since enemies scale with you, you never feel like you're very powerful. Obtaining new spells every 2 levels and getting better augments are the only character progression. How did City of Heroes do it? You had to work to obtain flight, or another movement power. SOH feels the need to give everyone flight and super speed right away. So what you have is a homogenized group of superheroes that all feel the same. Veteran levels are definitely a benefit. After 20, you continue to gain vet levels which just increase your stats. So in a way, by end game, you will eventually feel more powerful as the mobs cap at lvl 20 but you continue to improve. It just takes 15-20 hrs to feel it. No difference in the classes. Most classes have access to the same power tree as other classes. So a tank for example has access to the same spells as the melee class. The devastator, which is ranged dps, has access to the same spells as the support class. It literally doesn't matter what you play. If the classes added something to each playstyle there would be a sizable difference. As it is now, you can play really whatever class you want and you'll practically do the same thing every spell rotation....cast all your dps spells. Barely any cosmetics to change your characters look. Like 15 head items, 25 chest items, 15 leg items etc. Very few cosmetics. The few cosmetics you can choose don't mesh well. Females have access to a wider array of cosmetics. Clunky combat. Terrible animations. Unity asset flip: the game. Everything in this is a unity asset. Spell icons. Music I"ve heard in other unity indie games. Folks keep saying this is UE4 engine but i've seen these spell icons in several other indie MMO's that are unity. Game is criminally short. I completed nearly all the quest lines in less than 10 hours. Once you complete said story quests, you're only like level 13 or 14. So what do you do to level to 20? Well the game expects you to group up to do raid content, or challenge missions. Most of the challenge missions can be repeatable until you level, however many of them are broken, and after doing a specific mission more than 3 times, it will no longer allow you to enter the dungeon. There is only one repeatable challenge mission I found I could do over and over and its called Frozen Assetts. This mission is pretty much the only mission you should do the entire game as the mobs don't target you at all and all you need to do is heal some gun turrets. It's easy xp and repeatable. Terrible quest design. Every single mission is Kill everything on the floor and move up to the next floor. Then kill everything on that floor. Repeat ad nauseum. Dying in a mission has no negative repurcussions. You respawn and finish off the mob you died to. Their health doesn't reset. Keybinds reset after exiting and re-entering the game. Specifically if those original keybinds were originally defaulted to movement keys. Something as basic as custom keybinds, is broken. All missions are instanced. Only a few areas on the open world map that have mobs for farming. Map is VERY small. You can traverse the entire map in 1 1/2 minutes. Player housing is a waste of time. You might as well purchase the most expensive apartment for $8k a month real world time, because the game throws so much money at you to begin with. Game is VERY easy. Just pick a range dps class and you can run around and cast spells all day while moving. The mobs will never touch you. Take a healing subclass. Picking abilities is confusing. You're not sure when you unlock later abilities. No way to respec you abilites either if you chose the wrong spells and don't like them. Other than that, the game is fine. I do have fun on occasion leveling alts. I'm not sure how the developer figured he could get a sub out of this game when everything can be completed in under 20 hours. Literally 2 play sessions if you no life it. Its honestly baffling how little there is to do at end game, plus the fact that noone plays this, equals a dead end game where there are no raids. No raiding is the saddest part. Because I am interested in some of the end game content the developer introduced last year. Sadly I can't engage with it. I understand that making a video game is difficult. I dont want this to be completely negative. Some positives. The music, even though its royalty free, is good. Leveling is fast. So if you're impatient, well that's something. That's about it.
I like it. At it's best moments it really feels like new and improved COx. At it's worst it's remarkably frustrating. Overall though, if you put in the time and have the HW for it, it's a lotta fun. **update** For those who think I got paid, please, let me know where to get my check. Are you really so convinced that it's not possible someone likes the game? I like it. It was overpriced and buggy at the start but it's gotten so much better. These folks who played an hour or two and made a grand pronouncement, they are, to me, more suspect. I wish there were more players, I wish there were fewer bugs but overall, I for one quite enjoy it. You don't have to believe me but it is getting better.
I dont think the negativity is deserved. The goal was to make a game that felt like City Of Heroes. Personally, I think they captured that in my play time so far, all be it limited. Its a little clunky which sucks for how long it was in development but that can be fixed. Over all though. Thumbs up from me for what it counts
Janky and as wonderful as I was expecting. Bugs are definitely an issue but the game itself has good bones. The price is the only obstacle for most people though. I have to agree, making it cheaper would bring in more players for sure.
Needs a lot, but the groundwork shows. Hope the devs commit and wow everyone tbh. The dislike from "the masses" was warranted. I do think the new price is a better reflection of their product. Some would argue it still isn't worth that much, and that is a totally fair argument in our current gaming industry. ~Curious to see these folk cook
Is the game perfect? No, but what game is. Is it fun? HECKS yeah!
