Tried the game, it just felt bland, combat didn't feel good, and characters were lame.
Fun 2d beat em up, with enough variation in combat and enemy types to keeps things interesting. You can pull off combos or just bash n crash your way through the levels. Bosses are well designed enough to keep each encounter fresh and its sprinkled throughout with enough mini puzzles, challenges and cut scenes to mix things up as you go through each stage. The fully voice acted cut scenes and the secret encounters are a nice touch. Really fun to play as 2 person co-op and having an extra character to switch in for each player.
I played until all outfits and achievements. I used the "classic" control scheme and had great fun for 20h.
Ok beat'em up. You can swap between 4 characters on the fly each have its own health and combos. Story is compelling. Overall nothing groundbreaking but it plays ok.
Shing! by Mass Creation, published by We Dig Games, NA Publishing Inc., and WhisperGames, is a vibrant entry into the beat-'em-up genre that blends traditional side-scrolling combat with innovative mechanics and a striking visual style. At its core, Shing! seeks to refresh the familiar formula of brawlers by introducing a unique control scheme that fundamentally changes how players engage in combat. Instead of relying on the usual button-mashing approach, the game employs the right analog stick to control the character’s weapon, allowing for more precise and fluid attacks. This mechanic encourages a more tactical and rhythmic playstyle, where players can chain together combos with a level of finesse that feels fresh and rewarding. The ability to switch seamlessly between four different characters, each with distinct abilities and combat styles, adds another layer of depth and variety, giving players the freedom to experiment and adapt their approach to different encounters. Visually, Shing! stands out with its rich, colorful world inspired by East Asian art and mythology. The environments range from neon-lit urban landscapes to ancient, mystical ruins, all designed with a keen eye for detail and atmosphere. The art style borrows heavily from ukiyo-e aesthetics, lending the game a unique look that sets it apart from other games in the genre. Character designs are bold and expressive, and the animations are smooth, which not only enhances the visual appeal but also makes combat feel dynamic and impactful. The soundtrack complements the visuals well, mixing traditional motifs with modern beats to create an engaging auditory backdrop that heightens the overall experience. The narrative in Shing! provides a loose framework for the action, following a band of warriors on a quest to recover the legendary Starseed. While the story itself isn’t particularly deep or complex, it serves its purpose by giving context to the relentless waves of enemies players face. The dialogue leans into humor and lighthearted banter, which adds charm but may not satisfy players looking for a more emotionally resonant or lore-heavy experience. The game clearly prioritizes gameplay over storytelling, focusing on delivering tight, enjoyable combat and cooperative play rather than intricate character development. Multiplayer is a significant strength of Shing!, offering both local and online co-op for up to four players. The cooperative mode is well-implemented, allowing friends to join forces easily and coordinate their strategies to overcome increasingly challenging enemies. This social aspect elevates the game, turning what could be a solitary grind into a shared, lively experience. The multiplayer is generally smooth, with minimal lag or connectivity issues, making it a reliable option for players who enjoy cooperative action games. Despite its many positives, Shing! is not without flaws. Some players have encountered performance hiccups such as frame rate drops and occasional stuttering, which can disrupt the flow of combat and undermine the immersive experience the game aims to create. Additionally, the unconventional control scheme, while innovative, comes with a learning curve that might initially frustrate newcomers. Mastering the right-stick weapon control takes practice, and those expecting an immediate, button-mashing thrill may find the gameplay somewhat challenging to adapt to at first. Overall, Shing! offers a compelling twist on the classic beat-'em-up formula, with its inventive combat system, striking artistic design, and solid cooperative gameplay. It doesn’t reinvent the genre entirely but carves out its own niche by focusing on precision, variety, and teamwork. For players who enjoy action games that reward skill and strategy, and who appreciate a visually unique world steeped in cultural influences, Shing! provides an engaging and enjoyable experience that is worth exploring. Whether playing solo or with friends, it offers enough depth and charm to keep players coming back for more, even if it occasionally stumbles in technical execution or narrative depth. Rating: 7/10
A nice little co-op beat 'em up. Not the best out there, but plays fine. The only complaint - it's too short.
