Shennong: Taste of Illusion

[h1] Experienced on the Oculus Rift [/h1] This is a 10 minute, purely cinematic 360 VR experience. There is no spoken dialogue. Everything is understood from the actions of our protagonist, Shennong. Although the store description states this is a seated experience, and recommends you sit, you will need a swivel chair to look at the action all around you. You will even be looking up above and below you. The story may be a bit confusing to those of us not familiar with the story of this herbalist. I recommend reading the story from the store description before viewing this tale. The animations are top notch. The different background environments are unique. The Chinese dragon looks especially well made and will fly all around the screen. I really liked the musical score as well, but that may vary based on the individual. The bad news is that I did notice some jitteriness, especially when any object moved fast or when I quickly moved my head. So keep that in mind in case you don't have a beefy rig. I would guess you need at least a 1080 to get the most out of this production since the game engine is powered by the Unreal Engine. [b]Rate 7/10. Even though it's only 10 minutes, I think it's priced fairly given the quality production values.[/b]

太酷了！！！！！ 画风很喜欢，细节也很多！！ 交互感很自然 尤其喜欢最后一场大战的戏份 太燃了 就是看的时候需要脖子活动的快一点！！！ 配乐音效很有中国韵味 灵动 大气 之前就看过这个团队的拾梦老人，也非常喜欢！！！！真是优质又高产的团队啊~~~~~

我相信这是一部好作品，但在我的三星玄龙MR上显示不正确有重影！希望能修复！ PS:2019.12.9 开发者不修复这个问题，自己解决，抱着试试看的想法用注入Revive运行，结果重影问题解决了 哎。。VR产业任重道远

[h1]Played On: [b]HTC Vive[/b][/h1] Shennong: Taste of Illusion is a 10-minute animated movie for virtual reality; expect no more, and expect no less. It's sad that the mixed rating comes primarily from people giving negative reviews because they don't understand what they purchased. Either way, the movie revolves around a hero from "prehistoric China" named Shennong, and it depicts his battle with a giant and valiant beast as he himself becomes a fire god. As far as interactive movies for VR goes, this release isn't really anything outstanding; it simply is what it is, and if you're looking to experience all that you can in VR then there's no reason to avoid this title on sale. The animation is decent, and much of it comes up right in your face. It's also from the same publisher/developer that released The Dream Collector, so you know you're getting a decent quality title for a low price. Shennong: Taste of Illusion is a bit more kid-friendly than its predecessor, and it would be worth picking up for a family VR night. This experience is a high-quality VR animation instead of a traditional game. The journey of immersing into the prehistoric China is much interesting because even the Chinese people don't exactly know what the god of Chinese medicine Shennong looks like. The colorful image style and no-dialogue narrative way make foreigners easy to understand the story, and no cultural obstruction at all. Great piece and look forward to their next work!

You can only observe like a movie. I’m tempted to compare this with Pixar films because I saw a lot of good similarities. For example the overall design is bright and beautiful, it features a family friendly story about rising above adversity. The character animation is fluid and enjoyable to watch. The animation also communicates a lot as there’s no spoken language at all. Everything is communicated through cinematography and body language. And to that end the animation helps tell the story very well. It’s a great little film. The runtime is 10 minutes and the price is $3. So while the majority of other paid VR films are overpriced for the length. I feel that $3 is a fair asking price for this one, as long as you know that you’re getting a non-interactive short film. Check this out if you enjoy short films, or for showing VR newcomers.

十分钟的VR小短片 +制作十分精良，最后打斗也十分帅气 +国产很棒 但是希望考虑一下用户的观看体验 -短片中太多需要扭脖子才能看到的地方十分伤害脖子，希望加入手柄左右转向功能。 -坐姿已经右扭头到极限距离，然而主角还在往右移动，需要再左转扭头到极限距离才能观测 -最后的字幕出现地方在左扭头90度的地方，扭着脑袋看完字幕十分痛苦

This is a short storytelling experience, a real-time rendered story. Pros: - The visuals are nice: some environments are stunning and some special effect are very cool; - The experience has been surely enjoyable; - It has a Chinese touch that is not common to see in VR storytelling experiences from people like me that live in the West; - No one speaks, so it is possible to watch it whatever is your language. Cons: - Sometimes the visuals are too heavy and my GTX 1080 wasn't able to keep the pace; - I didn't get completely the plot... maybe there is no plot; - It could have been polished a little bit more.

Pretty cool and fun animation. Non interactive, you just look around and watch. Performance had a few dips in a few scenes, but overall was acceptable. Its only ~10 minutes and the price might seem a bit steep, but the production is really excellent, from sound to animations. Recommended for anyone that likes short stories told in VR.
