This was a chore to read. This is one of the least professional translation jobs by Sekai Project (they were involved with the Kickstarter, despite not being listed as a Publisher here). There are several instances of untranslated text, many instances of debug code ( <center>, <align>) in the text, some voiced lines that don't actually play voices, and typos, missing words or just general wonkyness/confusion otherwise. The biggest slap in the face for PC players, for whatever stupid legal/license reason, is that this is the inferior version and is missing "additional scenario content, Live2D animation and a new theme song". The skip function is also only minimally helpful as it doesn't consider whether the text is unread or not and just charges through. Past all this, the characters aren't interesting and the writing varies from plain to extremely simple text. There were a few bits of enjoyment, but it wasn't worth the read.
As I write this review, the look on my face is like a little girl trying to make sunny-side up eggs in the microwave only to have them explode in my face and break my spirit. I have been down here reading this long enough to laud an ant as a hero, is what I'm saying. Maybe I can just feed you some malarkey and get out of this. Mm-hmm. Science is progressing at a dizzying pace, so I doubt a little fib like this would be too far-fetched. I shall leave a trail in my wake with this review. The weeds that have chosen the path of carnage, trying to live their lives the best they can by sprouting at the rocks near the reservoir, get crushed by my body and let out resentful screams all the while. I'll use the blubber from my big and bountiful breasts as a counterbalance? For real! Yeah. I didn't accidentally roll down this hill. If I had to give an example of what trying to read this is like... it's like if the ground suddenly rose up in human form, passionately stole a kiss from me, and then told me. "Now call me your queen, peon." Then I suddenly begin to violently hit my head against a tree, to cover up my feelings. You know what this really means. That I actually do want a piggy back ride?! At least, that's the impression you get from my movements. Leave it to the body to be forthright. I know you're tired of reading this review, but at least give high praise to the superior quality of human skin on my face before you go. 0.74 seconds before I have another make-out session with the ground, my memory miraculously comes back to me. In approximately 5.77 seconds, you will shriek at the top of your lungs and slap me right across the face! Keep an open mind and accept me for who I am. That's a man's job. After all, my review is just a tool to communicate with you. Humans are tool-using creatures. Someone once said long ago something to the effect of, "If you can't use a tool in times of need, then that proves that you're less a human and more of a gorilla". Therefore, I can say that, by utilizing a tool, I've proved myself to be no gorilla. The problem, however, lies in the fact that gorillas do indeed use tools as well. I'm sorry. But my face doesn't scream "sorry" in the least. --- I took a chance on a much lesser known visual novel. It seems good on the surface. Its cheery and colorful looking. The art is gorgeous and the music is good too. It seems wholesome and happy, just what I needed in between some darker content. But I just can't do it. I can't refund it either, but the key was on sale and I will just cut my losses. I'm not even 2 hours in but its taken days to get this far because I can't stand it for long. I tried to formulate a review that accurately explained why I have to throw in the towel and give up on this VN, and I have slogged through a great many I didn't find enjoyable, telling myself there will be a payoff eventually. And there usually is. But I can't imagine there will be here. And when I got tired of struggling to accurately explain what the problems are with the middle schooler level prose at work here, I decided to let the writing speak for itself. Aside from my references to this being a review, every phrase down to punctuation, was taken straight from the text log. Note that all the rolling, tumbling, falling and stupid ground and weed metaphors were taken from *three different scenes*, as well. I'm sure mother earth will rise up to karate chop our heroes like a champion boxer who was almost down for the count until suddenly hitting a second wind to deliver the final blow 0.33 milliseconds before the bell rings in the final round at least 37 more times before the story ends, but I don't have the stomach to witness it for myself. She might be a mermaid, but the narrator is *insufferable*.
I got this during a sale so it was like... About a dollar or less give or take and it still feels too expensive. The translation was extremely amateurish, with many "(?)" in the lines that gave the script an rather childish air, there are debugs and typos aplenty and in many moments I was asking myself if the original text itself is horrendous or it was the bad translation. There was also a lot of nonsensical meandering, untranslated text (including menus), steam screenshots won't work and I heard that all the extra content had been stripped away from this version. Honestly? If I had finished it under 2 hours I would have considered refunding it. It was a very bad experience. Stay away from it. --- Longer review, if you'd like more details A young scientifically-inclined man named Hiroto feels compelled into going back to his hometown in the countryside and meet again with his childhood friend, Ion. However upon meeting up with her, to his surprise, she has been turned into a mermaid. The girl refuses to give him a straight explanation and Hiroto ends up bringing her to his old home with him. Throughout the course a few days, is skeptical mind struggles to wrap his head around the situation while dealing with weird characters like Pettako, the pet-minded other mermaid, and the enigmatic Rin. The premise sounds interesting enough, with an undergoing mystery moving along the plot: why and how Ion became a mermaid? Why it seems there is this uncanny reaction of the old country folk around her? There are a few foreshadowing scattered around here and there, but sadly the game suffers from more than a few pitfalls; for starters, Hiroto isn’t a pleasant protagonist unless you stop taking the story too serious because he only has two modes: pervert and science nerd, both that can be over-the-top to the point of being caricatures. There is little time spent with Ion to the point of her defining trait are the staring contests and wracking him in the head with her fish tail, and while there is nothing wrong with slapstick humor thankfully the point it was starting to get stale was when he started to duck. Then there’s Pettako, your traditional “little sister that sometimes say ominously mature things” and Rin, that those gender discourse might raise a few eyebrows and how it was executed could rub some people the wrong way. None of the characters is particularly developed maybe the two side characters got a little more than the main couple, weirdly enough. Then there are a number of infantile jokes, literal poop humor and, of course, boobs jokes. It is the kind of thing that the mileage might vary. Even the narration of story-relevant bits can be off-kilter in all the wrong moments even after accepting it might be closer to a wacky anime than a heartfelt visual novel romance (or eroge). It does have a number of Bad Endings and alternate ends, so there is some replay value. There are moments that it is hard to discern if the product suffers from poor translation or if the original script is just lacking. There are certainly a great number of typos, untranslated bits, debug text and everything to make it a rather unpleasant experience visually speaking. There is also bad formatting at times, with too many words cramped into one dialogue and then only two or three words in the next sentence. Graphic-wise it is a pretty standard affair, with nice graphics and beautiful CGs. The girls’ portraits are very well-drawn and the special graphics punctuates the right beats. There aren’t many other characters so everything is pretty simple. The voice cast is very competent and the music is appropriate for the mood most of the time. The re-release for the Switch have the name “My Girlfriend is a Mermaid!?” and have Live-2D graphics, unlike the steam version, and apparently have extra scenarios. There is also a Refine version for the Playstation 4 with the Switch extras. The steam version is said to have been optimized but it has untranslated menus, little in the way of quality of life and none of the extras. Unless the subsequent versions have a revised script and translation, it might be a good idea to wait for a sale. The story have some good concepts but it can be hard to trudge on in many moments.
The story is quite simple and the character development is quite good. However,it's lacking mystery atmosphere and the decision of choices seems rushed. Maybe if they could deepen the relationships between the characters and the mystery, it would be a really good VN. Overall OK to me
Booring story line. Too simple dialogues.
