Shadow Warrior (2013) is a criminally-unsung reboot that is actually more important to the evolution of classic shooters than most people realize, as much of what it introduced would actually be borrowed almost directly by Doom (2016) when Id Software decided to reboot the series' direction a second time. Shadow Warrior also has almost nothing to do with the original 1990's game from which it takes its name aside from the the general "vibe", as it tells a completely different story that ignores all the events of the original BUILD engine shooter released by 3D Realms back in the day. The game plays in some ways like Serious Sam, where players basically move from one enclosed fight to the next, unable to progress the stage until the fight concludes; unlike Serious Sam, this doesn't mean huge arena-like areas full of enemy waves, just frenetic encounters from mostly demonic hordes that play into the new Shadow Warrior's story of a demonic invasion of Earth by beings called Ancients, brought about by the pursuit of a mystical katana that proves the only thing possible truly kill them. Lo Wang is just a hired gun looking for the sword himself, and ends up in an interdimensional battle. The combat loop places focus on the player using their katana for much of the early game, and the player upgrade system also heavily favors the katana, with unlockable special moves that use something called Ki to power them; some of these moves are done with the katana itself, and others are abilities like player self-healing, shields, or shockwaves that ensnare or push back foes. The guns get slowly doled out through the campaign, and can also be upgraded using in-game currency, but you won't feel like you have enough of them to start giving your katana a break until midway though the campaign. Because of this, Shadow Warrior really feels more like a first-person melee combat game that gives you guns mostly as a way to kill certain enemies types better than the sword can, or to break up what might otherwise be monotony. You'll go between general hack and slash, using your special attacks, then flipping to a shotgun to break shielded enemies, SMGs to quickly tackle airborne enemies, or the rocket launch for the game's various heavies. Plenty of secrets abound, including retro-graphics rooms that Doom 2016 also borrowed for some of its secret areas. This game was pretty high end in 2013, using the Road Hog Engine which the developers built mostly out of the Unreal 4 code base, and back when I first tried to play it, my poor potato GTX480 wasn't up to the challenge. These days anything over a 20 series card can play Shadow Warrior on max settings in 4k, and the visuals still hold up, as does the gorgeous art style. The game has a linear but really long 17-level campaign, but sequels were each a different flavor of FPS, never quite returning to the formula of this first game in the reboot series. Jokes are still pretty raunchy, but obviously lacking the casual racism of the original 90's game that just wouldn't fly today.
In the late 1700s, coinciding with the California gold rush, Chinese immigration began into the United States. This was partly driven by England's economic destabilization of China, and it resulted in relatively desperate immigrants who tycoons could underpay. So they did. Anti-Chinese sentiment grew among non-Chinese workers over this, and tycoons---happy that *they* weren't being blamed for paying low wages---were happy to shift blame onto the Chinese immigrants. Shadow Warrior (2013) is a game by a Polish company. It's an adaptation of Shadow Warrior (1997,) a game by a US company. Both Shadow Warrior (2013) and Shadow Warrior (1997) have some interesting ideas and some mechanical jank. Minstrel shows were a form of racialized American theater. They appeared in the early 1800s, and then declined with the civil war. Although minstrel shows are primarily known for their racist portrayals of black Americans, they also featured other hostile racial caricatures. In the 1850s, the character John ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ was introduced. Shadow Warrior (2013,) design-wise, is a product of its time. It feels significantly more Doom 3 than anything else, with enemy waves spawning on you, awkward environments, and guns that tickle more than boom. However, it also has rpg elements. A sword combo system. Bread and butter melee. A scoring system that calculates your xp based on how fluidly you fight and how much variety you build into your attack flow. It is, in some ways, fps Devil May Cry. And that's admirable. Fu Manchu is a character that was developed in 1912 by English author Sax Rohmer. Rohmer's character was in turn based on the writings of Bayard Taylor, a mid 1800s American poet who declared that the facial shape of Chinese people meant they were incapable of anything but depravity. Fu Manchu, an evil mastermind heading a conspiracy to destroy the west, made Rohmer a lot of money. Shadow Warrior (2013) is a narrative shooter. It spends a fair bit of time in cutscenes. It lets its characters grow and interact, even through their one-liners. It's careful not to kill off too much of the cast. It lays the foundation for future storytelling. And its story is pretty good. Wang is a charismatic loser. Hoji has resting schemer face. Ancient gods are trying to save their home dimension by making their sister cry, but they all hate each other and they're trapped in a cycle of reciprocal recrimination that has left them all physically and emotionally bloodied. Wong Liu Tsong is considered to be the first Chinese film star in Hollywood. She got her first break in 1919 as an extra, and continued to appear in films until her death in 1961. She was notably denied a role in 1935's The Good Earth, a story about Chinese farmers, with MGM preferring to cast white actors for its roles. This type of casting was not uncommon. Shadow Warrior (2013) casts Jason Liebrecht as Lo Wang's voice. Shadow Warrior (1997) had him voiced by John William Galt. I do not think (2026) that a game should be judged solely on the ways in which it stumbles. I also do not think that you shouldn't be allowed to depict a culture of which you are not part. However I do think that when you open a fortune cookie and it does that little zither jingle, you know the one, and inside the cookie is a Confucius say joke, what you're doing is minstrel. Steam reviews are binary. I had to pick up or down, so I picked. I think there are good things in here. Fps Devil May Cry is a good idea. Lo Wang is loads more likeable, interesting, and human in this than in 97. But like. I also thought about all the other things I've mentioned here while playing the game.
Ever played Doom and thought to yourself: "This game would really benefit from doomguy being a ninja and throwing corny, degenerate lines around"? If so, boy do I have some good news for you... The game is kinda stupid, in the best way possible and the entire plot can somehow be summarized in one word (♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥). Every weapon has its place, feels great to use, and has some incredible upgrades. I've had so much fun and definitely have to recommend it, however... the game does have its issues that are very obvious and painful to deal with. Having 9 weapons that you swap through mid combat is great, but the time it takes to swap between them kills the pace of the combat quite a bit and so does the reloading. The game somehow achieves both not letting you see anything and burning your eyes in the exact same room. The hitboxes are kinda ♥♥♥♥♥♥ though since you have a healing ability it's not that annoying. And the absolute worst problem that game has... the absolute worst collision detection I've ever experienced. It's one thing to get stuck on enemies, it's another when the skinniest ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ I've ever seen blocks me from walking past him because there's only 10 meters of empty space on each of his sides... Even with all the problems the game had, I couldn't stop playing and was having a blast.
Un puto clasico de la trilogia
im a very big fan of asian people
It has been a long time since I played Shadow Warrior 1, but honestly it still holds up pretty well even today. For an older game, the visuals are decent and the gameplay still feels solid and smooth. It does not feel nearly as dated as you might think. The combat is fast paced and fun, which is easily the best part of the game. Shooting feels good, but what really surprised me was how enjoyable the melee combat is, which makes fights feel more varied and it's fun getting up close with demons instead of just relying on big shooty weapons all the time. Progression and upgrades are fine overall, though the balance could be a little better in spots. As for the story, I do not remember every detail, but I remember liking it more than Shadow Warrior 2. It felt less cringe. Lo Wang still cracks jokes, but it did not feel like every single line was trying too hard to be funny, which makes it easier to sit through and actually enjoy. Overall, Shadow Warrior 1 is a fun action/fps game that still plays well today, especially if you enjoy fast combat with melee sprinkled on top of it.
