I am glad that this game is still on Steam, old school boomer shooter with modern mechanics. Loved the whole trilogy! *Keep in mind that there is a gamebreaking bug known as the "Super Speed Bug" which destroys your save file by forcing you to run x1000,glitches the textures, animations etc and you are unable to make any progress. Unfortunately when this happens(mine happened at CH15) you have to download a save file from another player and then load the chapter from there which means that you are gonna lose your personal abilities progress...

It has been a long time since I played Shadow Warrior 1, but honestly it still holds up pretty well even today. For an older game, the visuals are decent and the gameplay still feels solid and smooth. It does not feel nearly as dated as you might think. The combat is fast paced and fun, which is easily the best part of the game. Shooting feels good, but what really surprised me was how enjoyable the melee combat is, which makes fights feel more varied and it's fun getting up close with demons instead of just relying on big shooty weapons all the time. Progression and upgrades are fine overall, though the balance could be a little better in spots. As for the story, I do not remember every detail, but I remember liking it more than Shadow Warrior 2. It felt less cringe. Lo Wang still cracks jokes, but it did not feel like every single line was trying too hard to be funny, which makes it easier to sit through and actually enjoy. Overall, Shadow Warrior 1 is a fun action/fps game that still plays well today, especially if you enjoy fast combat with melee sprinkled on top of it.
Shadow Warrior (2013) is a criminally-unsung reboot that is actually more important to the evolution of classic shooters than most people realize, as much of what it introduced would actually be borrowed almost directly by Doom (2016) when Id Software decided to reboot the series' direction a second time. Shadow Warrior also has almost nothing to do with the original 1990's game from which it takes its name aside from the the general "vibe", as it tells a completely different story that ignores all the events of the original BUILD engine shooter released by 3D Realms back in the day. The game plays in some ways like Serious Sam, where players basically move from one enclosed fight to the next, unable to progress the stage until the fight concludes; unlike Serious Sam, this doesn't mean huge arena-like areas full of enemy waves, just frenetic encounters from mostly demonic hordes that play into the new Shadow Warrior's story of a demonic invasion of Earth by beings called Ancients, brought about by the pursuit of a mystical katana that proves the only thing possible truly kill them. Lo Wang is just a hired gun looking for the sword himself, and ends up in an interdimensional battle. The combat loop places focus on the player using their katana for much of the early game, and the player upgrade system also heavily favors the katana, with unlockable special moves that use something called Ki to power them; some of these moves are done with the katana itself, and others are abilities like player self-healing, shields, or shockwaves that ensnare or push back foes. The guns get slowly doled out through the campaign, and can also be upgraded using in-game currency, but you won't feel like you have enough of them to start giving your katana a break until midway though the campaign. Because of this, Shadow Warrior really feels more like a first-person melee combat game that gives you guns mostly as a way to kill certain enemies types better than the sword can, or to break up what might otherwise be monotony. You'll go between general hack and slash, using your special attacks, then flipping to a shotgun to break shielded enemies, SMGs to quickly tackle airborne enemies, or the rocket launch for the game's various heavies. Plenty of secrets abound, including retro-graphics rooms that Doom 2016 also borrowed for some of its secret areas. This game was pretty high end in 2013, using the Road Hog Engine which the developers built mostly out of the Unreal 4 code base, and back when I first tried to play it, my poor potato GTX480 wasn't up to the challenge. These days anything over a 20 series card can play Shadow Warrior on max settings in 4k, and the visuals still hold up, as does the gorgeous art style. The game has a linear but really long 17-level campaign, but sequels were each a different flavor of FPS, never quite returning to the formula of this first game in the reboot series. Jokes are still pretty raunchy, but obviously lacking the casual racism of the original 90's game that just wouldn't fly today.

A decent starting point for the shadow warrior series. Quick ♥♥♥♥ hack and slash with guns action that sadly feels lacking in everyway. It stays at just ok never reaching higher potential.
great game nothing amazing but worth taking a look because the writing is pretty funny 8/10
