Information / Review English
Shadow Spell Saga: The Winds of Fate falls into the strategy role-playing game genre, developed by Evan C. Weber.
Gameplay / Story
A brief summary of the story: You experience a diverse, sad, and thrilling tale spun from a web of machinations, deceit, and power beyond imagination. Visually, the game is kept simple, with simple pixel-art environments and straightforward character sprites that reflect its RPG Maker roots. Despite these limitations, the graphics manage to convey a subtle charm, especially in more surreal or emotionally intense scenes. The sound design is minimalist, with subtle background music that sometimes enhances the mood and sometimes fades into the background. The lack of elaborate effects or animations puts dialogue and pacing at the forefront, making the quality of the text crucial to the gaming experience. The narrative itself is where Shadow Spell Saga: The Winds of Fate shines and occasionally stumbles. The premise of exploring aging, memory, and the impact of personal choices is compelling, and the game deserves credit for addressing these themes in a medium often dominated by action and spectacle. However, some of the writing feels half-baked, and the dialogue doesn't always live up to the depth of the concept. Some plot twists tend toward cliché, and character development sometimes lacks nuance. Nevertheless, the storytelling is sincere and helps convey the experience, even if the execution is uneven.
Pros
+ Numerous heroes + Fantasy world with many surprises + Exciting and tactical battles + 26 grid-based maps + Appropriate background music + Simple controls + Good value for money
Cons
- English language only
Conclusion
Shadow Spell Saga: The Winds of Fate offers you a small-scale narrative game that moves away from traditional role-playing mechanics and instead offers a more introspective and emotional experience.

Information / Review Deutsch
Shadow Spell Saga: The Winds of Fate fällt in das Genre Strategie-Rollenspiel, welches von Evan C Weber entwickelt wurde.
Gameplay / Geschichte
Pro
+ etliche Helden + Fantasywelt mit vielen Überraschungen + spannende und taktische Kämpfe + 26 gitterbasierte Karten + passende Musikuntermalung + einfache Steuerungselemente + Preis/Leistungsverhältnis stimmt
Kontra
- nur englische Sprache
Fazit
Shadow Spell Saga: The Winds of Fate bietet dir ein arratives Spiel im kleinen Maßstab, das sich von traditionellen Rollenspiel-Mechaniken abwendet und stattdessen ein introspektiveres und emotionaleres Erlebnis bietet. Wow, this game is a blast if you like these types of isometric RP TBT games. I've played for about 4 hours now and it is very addictive. I am on about Chapter 8 and playing on easy and it isn't that easy. I have had to refight just about every map at least once if not twice. It definitely has that one more turn or let me retry to win this battle. The Dev is working on a higher screen resolution per the game's discussion threads. I believe he may be a one man Dev team, and it shows that this is a labor of love. I have 14 hours in and the "not being able to save when I want to" is starting to aggravate me. This is another game being ruined by too restrictive save rules. If I want to scum save, so what, who cares? I made it to about Chapter 12 but realized some of my team members killed in Chapter 9 aren't coming back (I thought that they would just be disabled for a Chapter... nope). I went back and tried refighting Chapter 9 and made it to the gravestone to save in the middle of the battle, but it only let's you do this once. I tried 4 more times from the gravestone and I am giving up. Screw this. It is too difficult on EASY. If you like this sort of difficulty when playing on "Easy" go for it. If you get frustrated, like me, by this sort of stupidity controlling saved games, you aren't going to like this. I play to relieve stress, not to induce it. For the love of God why can't devs just let us play the way we want to and not force their way on us? I don't plan to reduce my review to a NO, but I now wish Steam allowed an UGH, middle ground review.
Very fun FE-like. So far I'm enjoying the story, the diversity of characters/classes/weapons/skills, and the map design/objectives/enemy ai. I'm not a hardcore FE player, but for those who are I'd say this game does a good job at catering to us both. I tried normal difficulty initially and while it took 2 tries to get through the first 2 fights, fight 3 was rough and fight 4 made me restart on easy difficulty. Even on easy I've made the mistake of putting my Landon into a spot where 2 enemies attacking him was game over. So yeah, I'm sticking with easy and having fun with it. Give the game a shot if you're looking for a fun FE-like. [Edit: I've now put 15hrs into the game and I'm still only at chapter 9. I've restarted twice more now because I didn't realize just how bad I am at FE-like games. It's been a lot of fun trying to figure out how to actually play the game, but it's for sure a game you need to take slowly and think about the consequences of each action.]
This is perfectly serviceable Fire Emblem homage, but definitely rough around every edge. If you've played through Vestaria Saga and Dark Deity and are looking for more, I don't see why you wouldn't give this a shot.
Classic fire emblem experience
Wonderful game, if you like fire emblem you must play it.
Definitely rough around the edges as someone else said, but a decent game. There are some pretty glaring issues right now (it seems like you can only promote during a battle, shop doesn't always seem to work, unclear descriptions on some items and when they should be used, items that are stolen from you do not seem to return after killing the enemy unit), but overall the bones are there. I think with some updates to some of the mechanics, perhaps a training ground where you can promote, or some other mechanic would be helpful. Suggestions: 1) Removing the need for a special item to change class and instead have it done outside of combat. It's hard to assess how good a change will be, and you're pseudo forced to make that decision in combat right now. 2) Indicate a clear way in which items stolen are returned. The best defense against this is to stack several classes that steal, and then out steal the enemy. This is okay, but the item would/should be on the enemy when they die. 3) Shops in the combat zones make sense, but for some reason the shop during your tactical preparation doesn't work. It's all ??? for me. Fixing that would be extremely helpful. 4) A general update to how items are traded. Right now, having to "store", then "take out" is pretty obnoxious. When you "take out" an item, the menu can also close, which means if I grab the wrong item I have to re-open the entire thing.
It's a classic SRPG with a heavy focus on story and characters. There's a lot of variety in chapter design and objectives, with a number of alternate chapters. It's a good game for those who like old-school Fire Emblem.
