About
Severance is a 1–5 player co-op paranormal investigation game, with a twist...
YOU can become the ghost.
Severance is a 1–5 player, online co-op, tactical horror game. You and your team of investigators enter haunted locations to track and identify 20+ unique ghost types using professional paranormal equipment. Use tools like EMF Meters, Video Cameras and Possession Dolls to gather evidence and spot specific behavioral "tells." Whether facing a brutal AI or a player-controlled ghost in Asymmetrical mode, you must use your learned skills to solve the mystery before the hunt begins.
Choose how you play:
Face a smart Ghost AI designed to stalk, scare, and hunt investigators.
Or enter the Ghost Player Mode, where you hunt as the ghost against your investigating friends
In Ghost Player mode, one player becomes the ghost.
Interact with the map, scare investigators, lock doors, throw objects, and plan hunts strategically. Outplay the team by managing sanity, timing hunts, and creating fear before striking.
In Ghost AI mode, the entity is controlled by an advanced AI that actively observes investigators, reacts to their actions, and builds pressure over time.
It uses the environment, drains sanity, and hunts when the moment is right, creating tense, unpredictable investigations.
Use classic paranormal equipment to gather real evidence and identify the ghost type.
Be aware, the ghost sees and hears you. Every scare, interaction, or mistake can become valuable evidence if you stay calm under pressure.
Severance features realistic visuals, environmental audio, and a minimal UI for full immersion.
Every sound, shadow, and flicker could be a clue… or a warning.
Arm yourself with classic paranormal tools like EMF meters and thermometers, alongside unique devices such as possession dolls to track and provoke the entity.
Success relies on teamwork. Share evidence, communicate clearly, and watch each other’s backs, because whether it’s AI or a real player, the ghost is always listening.

basically just a phasmophobia from wish... way more complicated then phas and completely different but strange buttons. Graphics aren't the best and the game isn't exactly that helpful for newer players! sound volume for everything is also automatically 100% which is far too loud for headset users ( some not all ). Overall if you want to play a game like this phasmophobia is by far the best!! The only benefit for this game is being able to play as the ghost.. The maps on this game are not great there's only 1 small map and the rest are medium and large maps.
Better game than Phasmophobia! Ghost attacks more and is scarier, you can actually BE THE GHOST, better graphics, more characters, and more eqiupment. What the game could use is more maps and better models. OVERALL 9/10!
There are plenty of negative reviews for Severance that raise valid points, and I do not want to dismiss those opinions. But I do think there is one major issue that needs to be addressed up front, because how you approach this game will likely determine whether you end up loving it or quitting in under an hour and leaving a negative review. This is an Early Access game, and right now it does not have a proper tutorial. It also does not walk you through how to play in any meaningful way. So if you are someone who jumps into a game without reading anything, expects to adapt quickly, and wants to fully understand the loop within 10 or 15 minutes, you may have a rough first experience. After reading numerous reviews, my impression is that many of the negative ones fall into that category, or were written before the game received some of its larger updates. If you go in with a little patience, do some light exploration before diving straight into hunts, and take the time to understand what the game is asking of you, there is a very good chance you will enjoy it. It also helps that the community around this game is fantastic. There are some phenomenal streamers and players who regularly run Severance, and many of them are more than willing to jump into games, explain the mechanics, and help new players understand the concepts and flow. If you give the game a fair chance, it can absolutely become one of those regular treasures in your Steam library. What I appreciate most is that Severance asks you to elevate your gameplay. It is not just about collecting true-or-false evidence or challenging yourself by doing no-evidence runs. From the very first hunt, the game pushes you to balance evidence gathering with actually studying the ghost’s behavior. That creates a challenging but rewarding gameplay loop, and it makes each hunt feel more involved than simply checking boxes on a list. The learning curve isn't so steep to make it unnecessarily difficult but it is definitely a welcomed deviation from many modern games that feel like they play themselves. I also really enjoy the ghost events sprinkled throughout the game. I do wish there were more of them, and hopefully that is something we see expanded over time, but what is there already adds a lot of atmosphere and tension. (Nothing quite like walking down the stairs and seeing a creeping doll run across the hallway... no thank you I will now stay upstairs) Playing as the ghost is another standout feature. I love that you have some control over certain evidence types and can make it more difficult for the hunters to gather all the details. That extra layer of interaction gives the game a different kind of tension and keeps both sides engaged. I do feel like playing as the ghost becomes more fun on higher difficulties as well as the kind of ghost that is selected. Not sure if there is a meaningful way to address this without messing up other things... maybe an ability that allows energy to replenish more rapidly under certain conditions. Just something to alleviate some of the standing around and waiting on lower difficulties. Five player gameplay is another great benefit and really helps you expand game nights a bit. One of my favorite design choices is the van... well not the van in an of itself, but rather how you can interact with it. Having hunters physically barricade themselves inside to stay protected from the ghost is a great idea. It feels fresh, and it adds a whole new layer of danger when you realize you can still be killed while trying to gather tools. Safety is an illusion, and you always have to be aware of what the ghost is doing. Overall, Severance is not a game I would recommend to someone who needs a polished tutorial, instant clarity, or a completely guided first hour and is not willing to engage with the community for assistance or slow down and read what information is available before casting judgment. But if you enjoy learning through play, paying attention to ghost behavior, not being perfect at first, and being part of a community that actively helps new players, this game has a lot to offer. It is rough in places, as Early Access games often are, but there is a genuinely strong and rewarding experience here for players willing to meet it on its own terms.
Multiplayer feels genuinely fun, especially when someone gets to play as the ghost. It creates some really tense and chaotic moments with friends. Solo play feels a bit off though. Investigations can feel inconsistent, and sometimes it feels like not much is happening or the evidence doesn’t fully line up. Still, the game has a lot of potential. The core idea is really solid, it just needs more polish and balancing to make investigations feel smoother and more reliable.
fun and really good
for a game thats still in early access i find it pretty good, although im more of a controller player i found it hard on kbm, some equipment were not showing us the evidence hence weve spent 20mins trying to figure out, but as the only game where you can play as a ghost that was the funnest part for me, i liked it, but need to get used to the controls. and coming from a phasmo player i say good job hopefully we get to see this in full release soon.
Absolute buns. Nuff said.
SEVERANCE has a genuinely strong and creative core idea, especially the concept that the player can become the ghost themselves. This mechanic is fun, unique, and absolutely worth experiencing. The developer clearly has a great vision, and the foundation of the game is something I can definitely recommend to others who enjoy ghost‑hunting or possession‑style gameplay. Even though I know this is an Early Access title, some parts of the game still feel underdeveloped. Several levels look quite empty or lifeless, and the UI has noticeable issues, including overlapping text and elements that need more polish. These are fundamental aspects of the experience and should be prioritized before expanding character‑creation features. The store page now officially lists "AI Generated Content Disclosure". While this transparency is good, I personally cannot support games that rely on AI‑generated visual content. As a 3D artist studying game art and 3D animation, I have a very critical perspective on AI‑generated artwork, logos, and environment assets. Using AI for coding or workflow assistance is fine, but using AI to generate game art is something I personally choose not to support. However, the idea behind SEVERANCE is genuinely great, and I can still recommend the gameplay concept and the ghost experience to others. If the environments are improved, the UI polished, and the AI‑generated assets/Logos/Art replaced with professionally created ones, this game could grow into something truly solid. For now, I personally cannot recommend it, but the core idea is absolutely worth checking out. Fck AI-generated content in games.
i bought this game to play with my friends before i realized the dev used ai when there are people out there who would literally assist for free, this is my main issue, not the programming, systems or the developers work. i stopped playing because i do not support games that use ai in place of human created work even in solo dev projects. its simply a personal standard. also regarding the community i had negative interactions that weren;'t handled in the best way which contribute to my experience. edited after developer reponse. i apologize for the way i worded my review but my main issue was the use of ai.
