Soundtrack and graphics are good. But sadly the gameplay is just not there. It does not play like a Serious Sam game. And I think it is not even a decent top-down shooter... #1 issue: no manual save function and only 1 save file per playthrough. You cannot simply pause the game and resume on another day. The checkpoints are also invisible so good luck with that. This is made worse by the fact that all levels are massive and long to complete. The lives system makes no sense: when you die the fight is not reset, you respawn and have to travel through the empty, completed parts of the level to get back to the action. There are a lot of annoying minefields, where you have to repeatedly move in small steps, reveal and shoot mines, one by one, from barely outside their explosion range. Why. Lame "teleporters" that print 1 enemy every few seconds are used very often instead of spawning enemies in any other more creative way. You can easily win almost every fight by running back or shooting from the entrance of the room, since you are rarely locked into a confined area or attacked from multiple directions. Also being able to see enemies behind walls means zero challenge when unlocking a door. On many occasions I could shoot and kill enemies inside locked areas, clearing parts of the level I had yet to access... There are a lot of weapons, too many, because no one feels unique and situational. Just use your strongest automatic gun against everything. Most guns have a rather high damage and rate of fire so they obliterate small enemies very quickly. Kleers die so easily that you can not have fun dodging their attacks. The bigger enemies like biomechanoids and werebulls are instead bullet sponges. The Cannon, supposedly the strongest weapon, is a joke here.
I wanted to like this game. I wanted to like it so much, I played 7 hours of it. I can't. It's not a bad game. But there's so many things that are frustrating, that it's a death by a thousand cuts situation. That's your TLDR. Now onto the rant. Levels are massive. And mostly empty. On it's own it's not that bad, but you move very slow (unless you equip melee and use all your 7(!) dashes to move around). I immediately put stars into speed. And it's still not enough with how much you're gonna be backtracking sometimes. And the problem of giant maps is made even worse by the next problem. There's no good map. The garbage napkin drawing they give you in NATRISCA is basically useless. It does nothing. It doesn't say where colored doors are, it doesn't mark your position on the map, it doesn't even represent the level very good. It's just a vague drawing of some shapes, that look like a map. That's it. We had a usable map in Hammerwatch. What happened? We have colored doors galore, like in Doom, yet we have no map? They solved this in 90s! You just have to have a map. It's unexcusable. Weapons. There's a good selection of them. But! There's always a but in every aspect of this game. You'll basically always have ammo for your go-to weapons like laser and gatling/tommygun(especially if you take more ammo reserve perks), meaning unless it's some sort of special situation, you're almost always better off using these two. Sure, you can gimp youself by using some garbage, like shotguns, which for some reason need quite a bit of points in them for buckshot to actually travel farther than you can spit (classic shotgun sin, but still just as bad). Then again most weapons are shooting into the ground for some reason and can't shoot even across horizontal of a screen. Maybe someone would love to play using only shotgun, you never know. The point is that instead of a tight introduction to each gun and why it's in the roster, with monster closets, that are better suited for a particular gun with tight ammo economy, we have all you can eat buffet with 2 clear winners for most situations, that you can use whenever you like it. Ah, monster closets. They're mediocre at best and just straight up bad at worst. Like, I encountered a place, where it offers you a double damage before a fight with absolutely pathetic enemies that are coming out of holes reeeeaaaally slowly. I was never so bored to kill enemies in a Serious Sam game. It is pathetic. There are no other moster closets around to use this buff on, since you walk so slow and it's a linear game. Designing encounters is an art and it's hard, but it feels like they weren't even trying most of the time. Now we go to bosses. They are alright, but invicible states are a drag. What shoud've been action packed 2 minute bosses go on to become 5 minute kinda boring bosses because of this. And don't get me started on dashes. We have 7 of them, and they don't give you even a smidge of i-frames. You don't roll through enemies either. I'd rather have 1 dodge, that's actually usefull, besides being a little faster, than walking with a gun. Especially considering the blankets of laser fire and other stuff you're subjected to all to often. The last nail, that made me quit mid-level was, when I came to a round chamber, where you need 4 keys to access something or other. After I interacted with a place for blue key, I went further and came across a blue door. It wouldn't open. Well, me interacting with that thing before locked away my key and I can't get it back. This is some 90s ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ adventure game logic. And you know what, I'm not nostalgic about that aspect of them. Maybe, just maybe you don't need to open every blue door after that. Maybe the I wouldn't need a restart, but there's a blue door and I had a blue key that they took away for no reason and that was that. So here I am, writing this review that no one would give a flying ♥♥♥♥ about. Nice. There were some other nitpicks that were lost to time, but overall that's the picture. Too many small flaws, that on their own wouldn't be all that bad. But together they form this residual pain, through all the time you're playing this game. Like a migraine, that won't go away.
Overall, the game isn't bad. It has a good storyline, a variety of weapons, and the game itself is quite good, but it's not without its flaws. Unfortunately, this game doesn't have saves as such, meaning if you and your partner die, you'll have to start the entire level from scratch. There's a pretty good co-op mode, but the save quirks can make the game feel a bit boring when you're constantly replaying the same level. My rating: ✭✭✭✰✰

I'm only upvoting this because of the artstyle, the music and the core i d e a of the gameplay which should be amazing and it is on paper. The controls are responsive, the mayhem whenever it happens is great, the levels look great, for the first time ever in this franchise we actually see inhabitants in their respective historical locales, it all fits, there's just one minor yet unavoidable setback to all of this. The developers apparently had massive boners for the concept of constantly and aimlessly walking around the semi-empty levels looking for keycards in an agonizingly endless manner. Sure, Serious Sam has the occasional moments of semi-casual item collection quests, they're absolutely okay if they're integrated well into the level design, but not here. Imagine a Sam game where every single level is just the first half of Luxor/The Tower of Babel and you also have to finish 3-5 laps across the whole map to get every key item in order to progress. It's quite the disgusting idea, innit? T'was an absolute chore to play through even once, but thanks my uncompromisingly overmotivated co-op partner eventually we managed to push through. I guess they needed to pad out the time somehow due to the lack of level ideas, but I would always prefer a significantly shorter game that is linear, but tightly designed and sweet to play with every single playthrough rather than this overstretched crap. I regularly replay TFE HD and Mirror's Edge for this exact reason after all. In one sitting nonetheless! This could have been pixel art perfection if not for the constant keycard hunting bs, get it only at a discount and if you've got no other Sam games to play. The doctor highly recommends Double D over this if you happen to need your indie Sam fill.
