***I received a free key for this game. The statements that follow were not influenced by this fact. All of the opinions herein are my own. I was not compensated for a positive review.*** I'm going to start this review by saying that I think this game has a lot of potential. If the dev listens to the feedback from the community (which it seems that he/she is doing), this game could develop into a gem of an indie RPG. That being said, the game needs a bit more time to bake before it's ready...hence the early access status. Also of note, when I say that the Tactics system is ripped from FF12, please know that that is not a criticism. I loved FF12 and the Gambit system was fantastic. I wish more games would use a similar system. The Good The music is pretty decent. Nothing super special, but it's pleasant and doesn't detract from the game. I rather enjoyed hearing the music while I was walking about. The "find the dungeon" mechanic was very interesting. I've not experienced something quite like that before. It may be out there and I've just not played the game, but it was a cute, well-developed mechanic. The Tactics system. Just that. It's the Gambit system ripped from FF12. The system itself is great; if it's implemented well, the late-game combat will be smooth and efficient. The visuals are pretty decent. There are some rough edges, but this is an indie game...I don't expect perfection and those imperfections aren't a bad thing. The animations are little rough, but not so much that they detract from the game. The environments are pretty. The item descriptions are so crazy good. I mean, I had no doubt what the food did that I could purchase. There was so much time spent on these, it is obvious that someone really cares about the game and making it accessible to the player. The character creator, while a little bare bones, works well enough. Though I do believe that the color option should be after the option to add the feature, that is a minor complaint. The fact that you can customize your allies lands this in the good. There are a handful of customization options that will get a bit repetitive, but I love that you can make your party members look how you want them to look too. Kudos for that. The Bad The early game combat feels super slow. As soon as you get a second character, it feels better...still slow, but it's a big improvement. I'm going to venture to say that as you add party-mates, it will feel better and better. The early game combat speed is super rough, though. The terrain. There are places in the generation that are impossible to see because the generation puts a huge rock in the way of the camera that doesn't go invisible when it's in the way. That's something that needs to be addressed. The first dungeon. Now, I wanted to put this in the good category, but I just can't, in good conscience, put this up there. There are a few things with the dungeon that need tweaking. First, the very first dungeon is absolutely massive. Now, that might be okay...if there was a reason to clear it other than getting to the boss. Give me some unique mobs, maybe some decent treasure...some reason to want to clear the whole thing. Also, there was no exit...or at least I didn't see one. I was not about to walk all the way back out of the dungeon the way I came. Hopefully I am just blind and someone tells me what an idiot I am for not seeing it. The ability descriptions are lacking...there is little to no information about what abilities actually do. The skill board (also directly from FF12) will allow me to unlock Bravery, but doesn't actually tell me what that does. Now, I know from other games what Bravery is, but is it the same in Septaroad Voyager? I don't know. I wish as much time had been put into explaining these as was put into item descriptions. Final notes As mentioned, I believe this game has a lot of potential. The bones are here and the dev seems interested in accepting our feedback and making changes to make this game the best that they can make it. That being said, I believe that a 25 USD price point is high for this point in the development. I fully believe that a 10-15 USD price point is more reasonable. This game was enjoyable. The visuals, the music...they took me back to a bygone era of JRPGs. I look forward to seeing how this game develops and will definitely revisit after a few updates to see what has changed. It's far too rare to find an early access game with such good bones AND a developer that actually wants to make the game better. I'm quite glad that I tried Septaroad Voyager and can't wait to see what it becomes. Check here for the 1st hour of gameplay (with commentary): https://youtu.be/fevjVis7L2Y
Nice battle system and job tier. I love it.
SEPTAROAD VOYAGER has great visuals but that is the only thing it has. The price point it High, the game ls lacking in the interest department and the sound seems like it is non existent. Let me not forget about the floating characters, or at least they seem to float rather then walk... Just NOT my CUP of TEA! NOT Blockhead APPROVED!!! This game has so much potential! Definitely in its early stages, but looking forward to see how it progresses! I would love to be a tester for this game :-D!
Editted Review: Hello! It's a been while. Things have changed, and for the better! The game is still being worked on so, some things still need to be worked on. But things are better! We now have a camera to see through most trees. It would be nice to get that effect with every piece of terrain but, I appreciate that we can see through the terrain that most gets in the way. The tactics are still fun, though I did ♥♥♥♥ up the AI for my friend and I'm unsure of how. I set them to attack my target and they won't attack any target now. The world does seem to be built better, at least on the map, so that's nice. I have a lot of adventuring to get through so, we'll see if the tiles themselves are better. I haven't been able to check out the dungeons yet but, I did see where the dev(s) added treasure chests, more monsters, and just made the dungeons more interesting. So that's good! I'd still suggest getting the game on sale as I don't think it's worth the $25 asking price at the current time. But it is being actively worked on and the dev is taking criticism well and working to improve!
Porém, não me entenda mal.
As Classes
Man am I disappointed in this game. I was truly excited to play this but yuck was this bad. First was my guy moving on his own with controller and zipping across the screen. Ok cool, switch to keyboard and mouse controls. character now has flashy and glitched movement. Second I have to click target everything because i can't go up and down menus with keys, no rebinds for this either. Combat is boring as crap, graphics and not good. First quest is a basic boring "go kill 5 turkeys" followed by two go talk to this NPC quests. This is not worth $24.99, imo its not even worth half that. If you want the nostalgia of the FF game this mimics, just go play that.
As a lover of final fantasy 12 I really wanted to like this game but in it's current state it is just too clunky to recommend. The Pros - It really hits that final fantasy 12 itch, lets you set up your gambits/tactics and let your team run loose to fight the enemy using your programmed strategies - The skill boards are really nice and the game gives you a lot of skill points so you can feel yourself progressing through the trees and creating interesting builds for your characters The Cons - The inability to move your screen around makes movement really awkward at times. You will be walking down a path alongside a mountain and you just lose all ability to see your character and get stuck colliding with objects out of your view - The map in this game is just awful, it uses a grid map system with dot markers and no mini map so it is very hard to keep track of where your character is in respect to the world - This map issue makes it challenging to keep track of your quest targets and there is very limited indication of where you need to go - The dungeon system is very boring and repetitive, you go into a randomly generated maze where you need to explore different rooms before finding the path to the boss fighting the same couple of mobs, then once you beat the boss, you need to run back through the entire dungeon again to leave. Oh and for these maps there is no point of reference at all as to where you are on the map, so if you lose track of what room you are in your going to end up wasting even more time progressing through the dungeon. Overall I think the game has potential but unless your okay with no effective mini map and a lot of repetitive running around and grinding I would not recommend it in its current state
