This game doesn't seem to appeal to the hyper ADHD "git gud" elitist nitpicking spot farms that infest modern gaming, and that's fine by me as I am older and I enjoy it. Relaxing game loop, non-frustrating quests and simple character building that doesn't require a PHD to grasp, well implemented quick travel system, a map that makes sense and isn't 8 layers of 3d complexity that seems deigned to bamboozle. No smartarse game mechanic hyper complexity or information overload, the quests are not confusing, the story is straight to the point, the graphics are sweet and the autumn vibe is nice. I enjoy the generated dungeons, I enjoy the guns, the music is well done. Has a couple of minor bugs that will need addressing but nothing game breaking.
I really wanted to like this game. But it's probably a 4 out of 10. Second Sun is a basic looter shooter, with some levels, skills, and level up benefits. I really don't want to call this an RPG in any way. You are placed in one large valley, in a tiny military fort. The game drops an interesting lore bomb about there having been an advanced empire, but it lies in ruin due to a cult of the second sun. The second sun is blackish sun that has gradually grown in power over the years as the cult has strenghtened, eventually leading to a civil war and the appearance of monstrous shades. None of this is reflected in the game. There is minimal dialogue. No books to read. No deep dives. You can fit all dialogue in the entire game on an A4. Instead, you are simply told to go to point A, investigate, kill. Repeat. There is a reveal about the Second Sun, but it isn't expanded on. There seems to be SO much missing lore. Beyond that? Each time you enter a dungeon, it is respawned. That being said, the game is ugly as sin for a modern game. The art direction is terrible. There is no music. The character models are horrific. And the dungeons are just endless corridors with the same 10 recycled monster types. The AI is laughable. This game feels like a fan-made reskin of The Elder Scrolls - Daggerfall. Without a budget for music, art, or lore. And by someone with English as a third language. That being said - there is something very interesting here. The shooting is fun. The world concept is intriguing. I did beat the game, just trying to get into that lore. Alas, there was nothing to be found at the end. So yeah. Sorry. No way I can recommend this, except for maybe 3 dollars.

I wanted to recommend this game, I really did...but I can't. The game becomes very stale and repetitive fairly quickly. Everything about the game just feels somewhat lackluster. There is the most barebones story that never really seems to progress or develop in any meaningful way. The character creator is so barebones it's almost pointless. The RPG/skill progression system is pretty minimalistic with nothing in the way of skills or abilities that ever feel like anything but standard type stuff. The visuals look ok-ish in the open world, but the dungeon interiors are pretty poor. Nothing looks like it does in the screenshots by a longshot. The procedural dungeons end up feeling extremely copy paste both in design and enemy variety. There is very little enemy variety and you will end up fighting the same handful of enemy types over and over and over again. Enemy Ai is also pretty simplistic. The sound design is pretty bad as well. Guns sound both good and bad somehow, as if the sound is right but feels muffled or diminished in volume. The sound effect for melee attacks is offputting and sounds cheap. The looting is perhaps the one thing in this game that feels pretty decent, but you still get drops for other classes that are worthless for the class you are playing. But there is plenty of loot to be had and you actually feel like you are getting useful upgrades. But the looting does not make up for the boring recycled feel of the rest of the game. Update: I actually "finished" the game I suppose. At least, I finished the quest "The Final Confrontation" and the end cutscenes played. I played to the end of sorts to see if it got any better as it went along...it did not. After the soft ending I was back in the game world and unlocked the absolutely lame excuse for end game. Even the final few boss fights, about the only boss fights in the game, were all the exact same fights aside from a slightly different looking boss. I really can't even recommend this game on sale,
I am Recommending this game because at the end of the day there is nothing much wrong with it. BUT... There is stuff that kinda makes me wonder about it's last ability. The Enemies are all the same. Demon, Spider thing, Goat, Human, and a few extra differences but every dungeon u go into it is the same enemies. Yeah all the dungeons are different etc but there is just not enough varity in the dungeon pieces that make up the dungeon and the enemies inside. I keep finding Special Ammo but have not found a gun to use it with. Only guns i have found are Heavy Machine gun, Pistol, Shotgun and Assault Rifle. none that use Special ammo. Atm i have got my moneys worth out of the game and i am still playing. it just seems that it could use a bit more varity in the enemies and weapons.
Look I do not want to give this game a bad review, HOWEVER there is stuff here that just broke my brain. First, I did play the demo and thought, oh hey this game might be fun. but one persistent bug/urk/issue that kept popping up ruined any joy I had with the game. So lets talk about Jars Jars are a staple of random loot and money containers in video games. So Jars in this game have ammo and money, but there is a problem I kept running into. Any time I hit a Jar the game would stutter/frame skip. EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. It was too much, it was annoying, and kept poisoning the experience, to where I start to realize, I have only been fighting 5 enemy types. Spiders, Imps throwing fire, slow cacaodemons, cultists and finally .... a minotaur. thats it later on I fought a frigid thing, but it was just a humanoid with a deer skull hat naked with very strange textures on its body. Finally I decided, "i'm giving the game one more shot and going through this dungeon" it was called the "WELL OF SOULS" and it started in a standard well by some towers. we through it with no problems and activate the flag that is suppose to fast travel me to the entrance of the dungeon. It sent me to the outside of the First dungeon. My Brain broke. I don't know how this happened but it just made me refuse to accept that it happened. I closed the game and gave up. Sure the guns feel good and the magic abilities aren't bad, but I couldn't hold any more interest. I couldn't tell you what happened in the story, nothing could hook me in, not even side quests. The world feels and looks like things are just put there and doesn't even feel lived in. The houses, buildings and bridges don't even feel like they belong there, like they were just gary's modded in and held stationary. (if that makes any sense) I mean I think there might be issues with the Unity engine that makes this game... off. I can't recommend this game at all.
Environmental visuals are good. and the store page video really sells the game well. BUT damn guys, the Enemy intelligence really ruined this game for me. I just find myself being bombarded with hoards of the same enemies over that just chase you in a linear path with linear movement, you end up running backwards the whole time. Trying to strafe/dash around feels very meh, as the enemies just don't have much depth to them. you would expect different states, perhaps a melee enemy trying to strafe you, or a ranged enemy moving into a different position and hiding behind cover. I dunno, they tried to do the whole Doom thing, but it didn't sell it for me. Combat is what ruined this game for me and ultimately a Refund was requested. mind you my FIRST ever Refund. Yes, that's how bad it was.
This game is really cool in concept, but there's some QoL issues across the board that I think the devs should consider improving on. First off is general visibility. Everything has this same earthy color palette, making it really difficult to discern what is just environment vs what is and enemy, or what you can interact with at a glance. This is particularly bad when it comes to encountering enemies that look like tree stumps in the middle of a forest. Now enemies do appear on your mini-map as red dots, so you get a warning that they are there, but that means taking your eyes off the action in the center of the screen to constantly glance at the mini-map in the top right corner just to maintain situational awareness, and in many cases, by the time you realize you're engaged with an enemy that came running from the next room over, you're already being slaughtered. In general, while playing this game, I just constantly have this fog of war hanging over my head, making me feel like I'm spending more time simply orienting myself than engaging with the game in a way that's fun. Hopefully there will be updates to solve some of these issues if the game isn't dead already (there hasn't been a patch since January 2026 at time of writing), but so far I've spent more time wandering around, confused, rather than enjoying the time with the game.
the world looks bland. difficulty scaling ramps up to fast and the bad frame pacing doesn't help. but it gets loot right which is something looter shooters rarely do. You feel like there are constantly upgrades dropping and even in the early game you see stats to be thinking about. honestly while the game needs some technical help its wonderful outside of that.
Mehh
There are the bones of a decent game here, but the whole package falls short constantly. Story? A semi-functional Warhammer 40,000 knockoff. The Emperor's in a coma, daemon cults are running amok, the standing army is barely holding things together, and 90% of the people you interact with in the sadsack world are already dead or will be by the time you're done talking with them. Such is life on Volg. Design? A nebulous (thing)Punk aesthetic from somewhere between World War 1 and 2, that mostly looks good enough... with the tiny issue of brown enemies blending into brown landscapes, or grey enemies blending into grey Ctrl+C Ctrl+V corridors that you might see seconds before you get kidney punched. Mechanics? Functional, but lackluster. Everything scales to player level, so you never get to feel like you're getting stronger; think "Oblivion with guns" and you're on the right track. Only, your skills are even more lacking and it's possible to forget you have most of them. Guns are okay, but also fall short most of the time unless you take the class that can use machine guns and roll up on the daemons like a budget Doom Slayer. Saving grace? It passes the Monkey Island Inflation Test with ease, and if you get it on sale and can slog through something like E.Y.E Divine Cybermancy you might get an okay 8-10ish hours out of it.
