Second Sight, hands down, is one of my favourite games of all time. Despite its age and wonky mechanics, I've loved this game for its story and mechanics. Playing through the story, discovering new abilities and learning more about yourself or.. what happened. And the final reveal makes the implications of said powers such an interesting topic to think about. It left me bewildered the first time I did. I love this game and the story with it's sad and intense music.
Ah my head it hurts
the voice acting is so bad it's good. no native controller support, community layouts work good though surprisingly good gameplay and story with many unintentionally funny moments. get on sale for a good time. 7/10
I remember getting my original Xbox along with this and bloodwake for Christmas when I was young. I played it to death but never beat it until now. Even though it's janky and dated it's still a lot of fun if you can get used to the controls. Story is better than 90% of the shet today. I miss the days of these experimental games. 8/10
Second Sight is a distinctive third-person action adventure that reflects both the creative ambition of Free Radical Design and the particular experimental spirit of the mid-2000s era of game development. Originally released in 2004 and later brought to modern platforms by THQ Nordic, the game occupies an unusual space between stealth shooter, psychological thriller, and supernatural sci-fi drama. At its core, it tells the story of John Vattic, a parapsychology researcher who awakens in a high-security medical facility with no memory of how he got there, only to discover that he has developed powerful psychic abilities. This amnesia-driven premise may sound familiar on paper, but Second Sight quickly distinguishes itself through its structure, atmosphere, and its willingness to weave narrative and mechanics tightly together. The storytelling unfolds across two timelines: a present-day escape from imprisonment and a series of flashbacks to a military operation that preceded Vattic’s capture. These shifts are not mere stylistic flourishes; they serve to gradually recontextualize everything the player thinks they understand. As the plot progresses, conspiracies involving covert research programs, psychic experimentation, and shadowy government agendas come to the forefront. The pacing is deliberate, allowing tension to simmer rather than relying purely on explosive spectacle. One of the game’s greatest strengths is how it builds intrigue through uncertainty, encouraging players to question what is real, what is remembered, and what might still be hidden beneath the surface. The eventual narrative revelations land with genuine impact because the groundwork has been carefully laid. Mechanically, Second Sight sets itself apart through its integration of psychic powers into both combat and stealth systems. Early on, Vattic’s abilities are limited, but as the story unfolds, he gains access to telekinesis, healing, psychic blasts, charm-based invisibility, astral projection, and even the ability to possess enemies. These powers are not superficial add-ons; they fundamentally reshape how encounters can be approached. Telekinesis allows players to manipulate objects, disarm foes, or create distractions. Possession enables infiltration of guarded areas without firing a shot. Projection offers a reconnaissance tool that reduces risk and encourages planning. The gradual expansion of this toolkit provides a satisfying sense of progression and empowerment. The game’s level design supports this flexibility. Encounters are often constructed with multiple routes and strategies in mind, whether through vents and side corridors for stealth-focused players or open firefights for those who prefer direct engagement. While firearms are available and functional, they rarely feel like the most interesting solution. The psychic mechanics invite experimentation, and the game subtly rewards creative thinking. At times, however, the balance can tilt too far in favor of psychic dominance, particularly once more powerful abilities are unlocked. Certain confrontations become less tense when enemies can be effortlessly manipulated or neutralized from a distance. Even so, the satisfaction of combining powers in inventive ways remains one of the experience’s highlights. That said, Second Sight undeniably carries the technical hallmarks of its era. The camera can be temperamental, particularly in confined spaces, and aiming lacks the refinement that later third-person shooters would standardize. Movement animations and environmental interactions occasionally feel stiff by modern standards. Yet these rough edges are less damaging than they might appear because the core design remains thoughtful and cohesive. Rather than relying on twitch precision, the game often emphasizes positioning, timing, and power management. For players willing to acclimate to its early-2000s sensibilities, the underlying systems still hold up remarkably well. Visually, the game presents a grounded aesthetic that leans into muted tones and institutional architecture, reinforcing its themes of secrecy and control. Research labs, military compounds, and urban backdrops are rendered with a functional realism that suits the narrative’s tone. Character models and textures reflect the technological constraints of the time, but strong art direction and consistent atmosphere help maintain immersion. The audio design contributes meaningfully as well, with a restrained musical score that underscores tension without overwhelming it, and voice performances that lend credibility to the unfolding drama. What ultimately makes Second Sight memorable is not just its mechanics or plot twists, but how cohesively those elements reinforce each other. The psychic abilities are narratively justified, the fragmented structure mirrors the protagonist’s fractured memory, and the gradual accumulation of power parallels the recovery of truth. Few games of its era attempted such a tight interplay between story and gameplay systems. While it may not have achieved blockbuster recognition, it has earned a dedicated following precisely because of this ambition. Revisiting the game today reveals both its age and its originality. In an industry that often revisits established formulas, Second Sight feels refreshingly singular. It stands as a reminder of a period when studios were willing to experiment boldly with genre hybrids and unconventional storytelling structures. For players interested in narrative-driven single-player experiences that blend stealth, action, and supernatural elements, it remains a compelling and worthwhile journey. Despite dated controls and presentation quirks, its imaginative design and carefully constructed mystery ensure that it continues to resonate long after the credits roll. Rating: 7/10
For how cheap this game goes for on sale, Second Sight is worth it. Good enough acting, expressive characters, a compelling story, a nice artstyle, and a satisfying plot that doesn't go on for longer than it needs to. Best of all is the gameplay. Access to a fun multitude of powers as you go through the game with John Vattic, the main character. In a lot of aspects it still holds up. My only problems were the cutscene/audio issues where cutscenes would cut off too quickly and the audio would be out of the sync. An issue that especially frustrated me was not being able to close the game and pick up where you left off. You have to finish a level and only get checkpoints in the same session. Whenever you close it, you start from the beginning of the mission each time. Thankfully, chapters aren't painfully tedious and usually last up to an hour each at most. 7/10.
A classic espionage thriller with psychic powers. A gem of the early 2000s, sadly overshadowed by other games that came out around that time. Pros: Psychic powers are fun and allow for both stealthy and loud gameplay The plot is engaging and the voice acting is decent for its time Very cool end-game plot twist Cons: Game is a little easy thanks to all the psychic tools you're given. Maybe play on Hard mode if it's not challenging enough for you. Some levels it's not always apparent what you're supposed to do to proceed Not much weapon variety, focus seems to be on the psychic powers Game is a little janky to run on modern resolutions If you can stand the slight headache of running old games on modern hardware/monitor resolutions, Give this old game a try. It's a fun gem from the past that's still fun today.
