Right off the bat I wanna say that I have a ton of love for everything Windybeard creates. With that being said, I am not feeling this one - and I am sad to report this. Scud Frenzy just lacks that addictiveness that the devs previous titles have. Everything else about the game is super tight. The artwork and music are some of the best I've seen from Windybeard. The controls are great and if you get into it, there is a ton of content. Essentially, this is a static level score chaser with online leaderboards. Okay sounds great. Each level is a minute-ish. The gameplay is very much 'shopping spree' where you simply shoot everything and try to keep your combo going. There are specific blocks that help keep said combo going. There are metagame unlocks, but it's all cosmetics. The only things you can get are different weapons, but they are on a timer and don't last long. The whole game is about finding 'lines' through levels to maximize score. Pros: +No complaint about price; the whole thing is quite polished +Music and artwork are great +While it's fun, this genre is so crowded and there are just better score chasers out there (and lets face it, once you get into a score chaser - it's a total time dump) Cons: -Not really that addicting for me -While there are metagame upgrades, dieing gives you _nothing_ and it is particularly unsatisfying in this game -No way to gain back lost health, which just feels bad -Could use functional unlockables (but I'm sure that messes with the online leaderboards, I don't know) -The point system either feels obscure, or too simple, but either way it needs something If you are a fan of Windybeard, you need to get everything they make. I'm just saying that this particular title isn't my favorite, and I just wish there were a bit more to it.
Scud Frenzy
Scud Frenzy is a score-chasers dream, or chaotic nightmare depending on how you look at it. Its definitely a little rough around the edges but if you know Windybeard you know that's okay, because he's a developer who knows how to make a game fun no matter what it looks like and honestly the stylish and cartoon-y DIY visuals are always charming and at the very least unique.
Gameplay
Very much Bangai-O inspired (but with a lot less missiles) high-speed levels of quick, straightforward obstacle course styled gauntlets of destruction and collect'emup action in pursuit of that high-score finish. There's always multiple ways to reach the point quota of each cleverly designed maze of mayhem, but some will always be faster and more efficient than others so long as you have the discerning eye to find them. A huge selection of futuristic arenas to explore through is made fast and engaging thanks to a high-flying jetpack movement mechanic that lets you soar around freely. The classic 8-direction multi-directional peashooter will let you blast your way through debris and of course enemies, which in turn will let you uncover the hidden and necessary keys needed to unlock the hordes of delicious and point-bearing fruits and foods. It won't be an easy trip though, as progressively harder and more deviously choreographed formations of baddies will be there to stop you each time. Luckily, there's a shop to blow your hardearned bucks on to get permanent perks that will get your highscores rising. The circumstances of victory are determined entirely by your ability to rack up points, and obtaining points is done through sheer mayhem and destruction. Doesn't that sound fun? The arenas are a serious arcade collect-a-thon if you dig that sort of thing, and a lot of the appeal comes from a traditional score-chasing formula of retrying each meticulously designed stage to see how much better you can do, how much more you can collect, and how much faster you can barrel through without sacrificing any sweet scoring or precious time. Even if that sort of repetitive score-topping focus isn't really your thing and you're more of a modern minded gamer, the action has a very classic Treasure-like feel to its gritty impact and fast directional shooting that keeps you engaged.
Final Thought
If score-chasing, highscore busting, record time-setting bursts of bite-sized arcade action are your thing and you dig quick "one more try!" checkpoint games like Bangai O or even Crazy Taxi, then this is gonna be your jam. It has the same palm-sweating time shaving retries that those sort of arcade titles induced, and its incredibly easy to get sucked into playing a certain level over and over just to pick up every last fruit and squeeze out ever last second. If that isn't your sort of scene, pass this one up because there isn't much in the way of overall progression or persistence. Arcade purists only, here! Score-chasers are a niche bunch of arcade enthusiasts, so its always admirable when someone like Windybeard gives us something to sink our teeth into. These are the sort of indie experiences I live for, absolutely recommended and top of my Windybeard list. To get more points, you will need to increase your multiplier by not only wrecking the scenery while picking up power-ups, but also not getting damaged by the unique monsters and hazards such as spikes, lasers or pits filled with acid. On the other hand, there are a lot of customability characterwise, as there are over 60 heads and jets to choose from, like a hot sauce bottle or a stack of cash.
Pros:

Great variety of jet packs and heads offering hundreds of cosmetic possibilities.
Perk system that will make the game easier the further you go. By breaking crates you will earn "Scud Bucks", used to buy said perks that will help you boost your score by making you invulnerable to laser, recharging your fuel when breaking certain types of blocks and increasing the duration of power-ups.
Power-ups that change the gameplay by swapping your weapon, briefly increase your fuel, add some precious seconds to the timer or even increase the multiplier by one (which has a maximum of five).
Great replay value due to the demanding scores needed for the "3 Scud medals".

Cons:

No clear paths on first level clears, as the screen is filled with crates, signs, food, enemies, secret areas and traps.
There are some really unfair stages unless you have certain perks purchased (which might take a while to unlock due to a high cost).
Some unpredictable enemies can ruin your multiplier because of the way they bounce
BUG: The total "Scud Medal" counter has a problem. When starting a second (or third) file and naming it like the first one, the medal counter will display the number of medals of the first savefile but all the levels are unplayed, so it allows to get 168 (max) medals without getting the 3 Scud Medals and all the stash medals (achieved by collecting specific items a certain ammount of times).

Conclussion:
Even though the game is a good portrait of the genre and the hard work and dediction put into this game, it still has room for improvement, like lowering the score needed for the "3 Scud Medals", fixing the mentioned bug and adding more powerups. The game's length is around 5h for a basic playthrough but can be easily doubled if you go for a 100% completion, as the game is easy to play but hard to get high scores. Scud Frenzy is a solid over the top, twin-stick shooter, score attack, action game with good systems and fun gameplay mechanics. Super fast pace shooting and massive destruction with time limited exploration makes this a unique experience within the genre. Each level only lasts about 1 minute which makes replaying them a few times to figure out the best path to victory a unique and interesting gameplay loop. Finding powerful weapons or +10 second time pickups are incredibly rewarding as they allow you to keep racking up the multiplyer and hit that high score. Beating levels gives you stars which you can use to unlock some unique and mostly silly cosmetic skins for your character. My favorite is the broken egg head and the sub sandwich jetpack. While the art is overall good with inviting colors and interesting designs, it suffers from visual overload at times with a lot of detail in every asset, so dying by running into spikes and hazards that you don't notice is a regular occurance. Since the layouts are fixed, you will always remember where they are so you can avoid them on your next run. With 40 highly replayable levels and a bunch of fun unlockables, Scud Frenzy is a solid action game that is certainly worth the low price.
I don't expect much from Indie games nowadays, usually they feel unfinished and lack fun and addiction. But not in this case! I actually really enjoyed this game. It does feel hard an annoying at times, but this brings me back to the old days when you had to keep trying in order to get that sense of accomplishment. The developer has put a lot of effort into making this game which shows in the quality of the art, the design and the music and sounds. For £4.99 you can't complain, as it gives hours of fun, and if it doesn't give you hours of fun, then pass the controller onto your friend to try and help you out. This is a great 'go to' game that you can just pick up and play at any time, be it for 5 minutes or an all nighter (to get all those damn medals). You will sweat and you will cry, and you will most likely throw your controller at the wall in rage... Fun times to be had by all. "You gotta try harder than that!"
After playing the other titles created by Windybeard and following his stream for this newest title he created I was really hyped to finally be able to play this game. And I have to say, I was not disappointed by it. It is another awesome game made by one of the friendliest creators I know. From the hand drawn graphics, the amazing sound design, down to the smooth controls, this game offers the awesome look and feel I usually only know from old arcade titles. If you like arcade shooters this is a must-have game for you! The concept is simple, yet awesome. Start the level, destroy everything on your path and get the highest score you can. After that, see how other players did on the global leaderboard and feel the motivation to do it again and get better until you beat them! Beating the score target on a level gives you medals that can be spent to unlock new heads and jetpacks for your character. And each one is unique looking giving you a huge choice to make your character look like you want him to look. It's a 10/10 arcade game that I would strongly recommend to anyone!
BIG MONEY, BIG PRIZES, I LOVE IT! Scud Frenzy is a call back to games like Smash TV. The goal is to score as many points as you can in a fixed times, which varies from map to map. You achieve this by destroying pretty much everything in sight! Destorying things fills up your frenzy meter, which in turn increases your multiplier. Throw in a variety of weapons that can be grabbed, from riccochet shot to rocket launchers, secret rooms, keys to open prize rooms, and this all adds up to a fast, frantic blast-em-up as you try to find the most efficient way around a map to squeeze those few extra point you need to unlock the next map. The game also features a ton of unlockable customisation option you purchase using the medals you earn in games, and allow you to mix and match your perfect Scud from a selection of heads and jetpacks, all featuring the very distinctive Windybeard art style. Injekted has once again provided the music for the game and has very nice 80s style synth vibe going on and provides a nice backdrop to the frenzy of destruction going on in the game. There are also online leaderboards if you are into that sort of thing. All in all, for the price this is a great game if you are nostalgic for the score-attack games of old, like Smash TV and the like, or just looking for a straight-forward dose of mayhem with that "just one more run" level of addictiveness Windybeard always manages to provde, like his previous games Geo & Dreamstones (also both recommended!)
This is a fine little game show-style twin-stick shooter. It's fun to play and the artwork is nice along with the occasional commentary from the announcer. But I give it a thumbs down because of the difficulty level-it is way too hard from the beginning. The scores you need to advance and unlock levels are just too high at the start and while there are powerups you can buy to help you out, ou really have to do all kinds of grinding to get them after you buy the first few you can get after the tutorial. If you can catch this on a good sale it's worth giving a try, but if you have little patience or don't like games that start out incredibly hard and don't let up (with no options to adjust difficulty levels) then pass on this one.
This game does NOT work with my xbox 360 wireless controller and I am not the only one with this problem. The 1.4 hours shown played is the amount of time I have wasted trying to get it to work. Meanwhile, crickets from the dev. Nothing like paying money for a game that is unplayable. Don't waste your neetbux on this tripe.
Are you a competitive player who likes fast paced 2d platformer/shooter games with a retro feel, then grab this game and blast things to bits and pieces! :) Shoot your way through an obstacle course of pickups, scenery and enemies in attempt to score the highest amount of points before the time runs out. Its like a trip back to the golden age of amiga 500, but with online scoreboards! No more fighting your useless siblings for highscores, now you're playing with the real nerds! <3 I feel that the game gives great value for money, there's a lot of levels and everytime i finished a level I felt really compelled to play it again, just to squeeze out a bit more points and maybe get on the leaderboards. I've played it with gamepad as well as mouse/keyboard (if you play on mouse/keyboard, prepare to get used to the shooting directions, it took me a few levels to get used to the system. Your player only shoots in the 8 diagonal directions, whereas your mouse can point anywhere.) But hey, you cant call yourself a retro gamer without a gamepad, amirite? ;)
