The story begins with the titular hero, Screen Boy, who decides to propose to his beloved girlfriend. Just as the moment turns heartfelt, a villain and his gang burst onto the scene. The antagonist’s plan is to throw the hero into a well, hoping to remove him from the picture and marry the girl himself. Like most platforming protagonists, your moveset is fairly straightforward. You can jump, double jump, wall jump, and throw out a short punch to attack enemies. The punch only reaches a small distance in front of you, and unfortunately, taking damage happens far too easily. At times it feels as though enemies harm you even without making clear contact. The jumping mechanics are a mix of solid and frustrating. The double jump functions smoothly and adds flexibility, but the wall jump is a disaster. It requires pressing away from the wall while jumping but you never get comfortable with it. Mashing the button doesn’t help because a double-jump resets everything and drops you all the way to the bottom. Instead of straightforward, linear stages, the game emphasizes exploration. Each area tasks you with searching for switches to press or items that need to be carried to other characters. The individual zones are small, but several are linked together. Because there’s no map to guide you, memorization becomes essential. As a result, backtracking is frequent, and you’ll find yourself retracing steps often while juggling item deliveries. Fighting enemies isn’t always rewarding, since they don’t drop items or provide bonuses. On top of that, they respawn every time you transition between screens. This makes combat feel tedious when you’re already moving back and forth through familiar territory, as you’ll often end up fighting the same enemies repeatedly. Lives are limited, and losing all of them forces you to restart the entire adventure. Fortunately, checkpoints exist, acting as respawn markers. Even more forgiving is the game’s save system because you can save progress at any moment. If you die, simply reload your save, and your health is restored to full. This trick significantly reduces the challenge, and in some cases, it breaks boss encounters. Boss fights themselves are fairly straightforward. Most involve dodging predictable patterns while sneaking in attacks. Though they can withstand plenty of hits, most remain manageable with patience. The exception is the Rock King, whose attacks are nearly impossible to dodge legitimately. However, abusing the save-load feature turns him into a harmless target. The game isn’t overly long, but fully completing it requires collecting all 99 gems hidden throughout the world. If you don't want to bother, the save-load feature lets you cheat this as well; if you quit the game and reload, the gems respawn.

A fun and challenging game. A mix of platforming and adventure with amusing dialogue and extremely good level design. Well worth a punt!
