Screams from the Past, developed and published by Dream Pocket Studio, is a compact, story-driven horror experience that places emphasis on investigation and atmosphere rather than action or survival mechanics. Set within the unsettling confines of an abandoned orphanage, the game builds its identity around uncovering a buried mystery through exploration, observation, and piecing together fragments of a troubled past. It doesn’t attempt to reinvent the genre, but instead focuses on delivering a focused and immersive narrative experience. The gameplay revolves around methodical exploration and light puzzle-solving. Players move through the orphanage’s dimly lit corridors, searching for clues, interacting with objects, and gradually assembling the story behind the events that took place there. The structure is simple and easy to follow, with clear objectives that guide progression without overwhelming the player. Rather than introducing complex mechanics, the game relies on its environment and narrative to maintain engagement, allowing players to approach it at a steady and deliberate pace. A notable aspect of the experience is its investigative angle. Players are not just exploring for the sake of progression—they are actively trying to understand what happened and identify the truth behind the events. The presence of multiple suspects and scattered evidence adds a subtle layer of deduction, encouraging players to pay attention to details and form their own conclusions. While this system is not deeply complex, it provides a sense of involvement that goes beyond simple exploration. The atmosphere is the game’s strongest element. The orphanage is designed to feel oppressive and unsettling, with narrow hallways, dim lighting, and carefully placed environmental details that hint at its history. The game relies heavily on tension built through anticipation rather than constant threats, creating a slow-burning sense of unease. Sound design plays a significant role in this, using ambient noises and subtle cues to reinforce the feeling that something is not quite right. Moments of heightened tension are effective, even if they are used sparingly. Puzzles are integrated into the experience in a way that supports the narrative flow. They are generally straightforward, requiring observation and basic logic rather than complex problem-solving. This keeps the pacing smooth, ensuring that players are not stalled for long periods. However, the lack of difficulty may leave more experienced players wanting a greater sense of challenge, as the puzzles rarely push beyond familiar concepts. As the game progresses, its limited scope becomes more apparent. The core gameplay loop remains consistent throughout, with little variation in mechanics or structure. While this helps maintain focus, it also leads to a degree of repetition, as players encounter similar types of interactions and challenges from beginning to end. The experience does not evolve significantly, which can make it feel predictable once its patterns are understood. Visually, the game adopts a modest but effective approach. The environments are not highly detailed, but they are designed with enough care to support the intended mood. Lighting is used strategically to create tension and guide attention, compensating for the simplicity of the assets. The overall presentation is cohesive, even if it lacks the polish and complexity of larger productions. The game’s relatively short length works both for and against it. On one hand, it ensures that the experience remains focused and does not overextend its ideas. On the other hand, it limits the depth of both the narrative and gameplay, leaving little room for further development or replayability. Once the mystery is resolved, there is little incentive to revisit the game beyond experiencing its atmosphere again. Ultimately, Screams from the Past is a straightforward and atmospheric horror title that delivers a solid, contained experience. It succeeds in creating tension and intrigue through its setting and narrative, even if its mechanics remain simple and its scope limited. It is best suited for players who enjoy slow-paced, investigative horror games and are looking for a short, focused experience rather than a deeply complex one. Rating: 6/10
