So I loved the concepts in this game and the characters especially, but the story and execution quickly ruined it. The characters were diverse and nuanced, and I honestly wanted to dig deeper with them. I have no complaints about them or the art style, which was excellent. The story was interesting, even when i guessed the twist quickly, and the first the of the game felt well done and cohesive through my run. However, that started to change by the second area, the end of which felt a little jumpy. it got worse in the third half, and became a serious problem in the finale. There were revelations that either I missed by choosing a different route or simply were not by the end I was confused as to explained clearly. I think part of this stems from the fact that you choose a companion to go into each chapter, and while I mixed and matched, maybe that was a mistake. It also felt like the last two areas were very brief, especially compared to the first two areas. Another area that didn't quite work was the in-world "stream chat." I loved the concept, and at first it was everything it was cracked up to be, but again, towards the end it started glitching slightly by being ahead of what was actually happening narrative-wise, then by the end it had kinda fizzled out. There were also continual graphics glitches from the second area through the third, Overall, this game has lovely concepts and characters, an intriguing story that sadly is never developed enough to really hit home, and enough technical glitches that replaying for more depth is not worth it.

A great game, overall! Lots of depth to the critters one encounters, a fun art style, and I could name my main character Spider, which, of course, I did. Unlike some other visual novels, the main character wasn't handed the idiot ball at any point, as best as I could tell, and the main plotline was interesting, with a last-minute twist that fit the setting and managed to subvert a few expectations. The use of signal degradation and chat weirdness in the presence of supernatural entities was generally fun and well-executed. My biggest criticism is that the scroll wheel of one's mouse both scrolls through the right-hand chat section, and advances the dialog, which makes it hard to look at what is going on in one's stream chat. Currently a mite short for the price; to get your full money's worth, it might be best to wait for the full release. (Or, of course, get it when it's a dollar or two off!) However, what is there was definitely well-written and well thought out.
WHOA! What a cool game, some may even say the best game! Cool characters in which to date, and cool ghosts in which to bust.
Very fun game!! I've only played through the game romancing Charlie so far but I really liked all the characters. The designs for the non humans were also super, super cool and i loved seeing them :o) It was also interesting seeing how the chat was reacting to everything going on, whether they were skeptics or fully on board!
Short Review:
- Fun idea about paranormal investigators live streaming - Story was confusing but interesting (less confusing if you choose Raz for everything first) - Mostly dialogue, little narration - Choices don't affect plot but can lead to romance - Touching friendship - Unique characters - Bold, fun art (no CGs) - Overall an enjoyable, fairly quick visual novel
Full Review:
This has some great elements, and I enjoyed playing it! I just also have a few complaints. Likes: A visual novel about a team of paranormal investigators running a live stream is a fun idea! The live chat (part of the game, not real people) along the side of the screen is also fun and written in a way that made it feel genuine, not too perfect. I liked the story. It was more serious than I was expecting. The paranormal/mystery element was interesting, especially once I got all the pieces of the puzzle and mostly understood. And the character/emotional arc element was realistic and touching, ultimately about support and friendship. The characters were all unique without being exaggerated caricatures, and they were likeable. I liked getting to know them a bit. You can romance any of the four characters. (You get to know the character a bit throughout, and then it's a few sentences that hint at romance at the end.) Or you can spend time with different characters throughout and have friendship without romance. I like the bold, fun character designs! They have such a strong artistic style. Including the ghosts. The backgrounds were a different art style but nice too. Even the design of the whole screen and UI was fun. (No CGs.) Dislikes: I was confused in my first playthrough. Characters would make connections and talk about things, but I didn't understand. I now realize, I was missing info because you get different bits of info depending on who you choose to go with in each section, but the conversation between sections doesn't really change. So they sometimes reference things you don't know yet or that didn't happen in that playthrough. Characters are also really vague and beat around the bush a lot. It made more sense the repeated times I played, but I still think they could've made things a little more clear. I recommend choosing Raz for everything the first time, that might help. Characters would sometimes say or notice very similar things. Like, no matter who you went with into the hospital with, they would note the lights being on, and either you or they would suggest a fake baby distraction. It would've felt more genuine if they noticed or suggested different things. There were some little glitchy things when I first played, but as far as I can tell, they've been mostly fixed. Text in the chat still gets added further up instead of at the end sometimes, but it's no longer ahead of what's happening on screen. Neither Liked or Disliked, but Still Worth Mentioning: There's no music during the game, but there are some sound effects, and the intro music is fun. Choices don't matter for the plot (except one, sort of, near the end). Mostly what matters is which character you choose for each section, and some dialogue choices may affect the romantic outcome. This VN is more about experiencing the story and getting to know the characters. The game is mostly dialogue, very little (if any) narration. I saved Charlie for last, and I'm glad I did because not only was he fun with all his government conspiracies and cryptid lore, his romance also felt the most believable for me, and understanding the story helped me to understand the emotion in his route. It took me 2 hours to finish my first playthrough and about 5 hours to complete the game with all four characters. The full price of the game is $11.99, and to be honest, I would expect a game to be a little longer and more developed for that price. Personally, I'd wait for a sale, but it's up to you. Another thing to note, the devs are encouraging people to use the characters, art, and story to make their own content! More info can be found on the store page. Overall: If you don't mind a bit of confusion at first and you like short visual novels, you may enjoy this for its fun premise, bold art, and interesting paranormal story! *Review can also be found on my blog (link in profile).*
Accessibility:
(May not include everything) - Not accessible for blind / visually impaired players and screen reader users.
Scream Cap is a short and sweet little mystery vn with some small romantic undertones you can have with each team character. There are no CG's to my knowledge however, but you do get to have a cute and sweet ending with different characters. The character designs and environments overall are made with much love and unique care! I especially like the designs for the ghosts and ghouls! The game is worth the price if you play each route focusing on each team member, but if you just want to do one route i'd say get it on sale. To get the full understanding of the story I think more playthroughs will help flesh things out. It was charming, and silly playthrough for me! I do recommend it!
This game deserves so much more recognition! I'm so obsessed with the characters and the surrounding world! Would love to see another game with the same characters, if possible.
