I really want to like this game but I find the keybinds extremely awkward and cannot find any way to change them. Also cannot change to my screen resolution so am forced to play in windowed mode on a tiny box. Sorry thumbs down for me since I can barely play it.
I got the game on sale hoping for a decent mindless platformer. Unlike other reviews I haven't had any problems with the port, but as a platformer this game is completely uninspired. It's slow paced, the item collection is boring, and combat is extremely simplistic. Give this one a miss.
Genre
Ein 2,5D Action Plattformer
Story
Achievement Schwierigkeit 6/10
Es gibt insgesamt 12 Erfolge. 9 bekommt man automatisch beim durchspielen.

Follow Main group
 Follow Second group
 Follow third group
Scary Girl is an uncanningly refreshing experience with levels varying from somewhat intermediate to tough with critter bosses in any side-scrolling platform adventure game. It might take a lot of deaths and preserving health till end strike is a way to not give up on this game and continue till end to divulge deeper into this breathtakingly stunning world of a not-so-scary-girl lookalike fantasy world and bring back the old buddy, the keeper of tree kingdom back from kidnappers. Every 5 levels or so you would have to defeat bosses that gets increasingly tougher , and you lose health quite easily in this game which makes this game slightly challenging and not unlike any easy-peasy platformer games. The art of this game highlights the journey of this risk-lover girl in an aesthetically pleasing way. Get this game and I guarantee, more than the game, you will forever be in love with the personality of the main female protagonist of this game, Scary Girl. In fact, I can say, scary girl is now on top of my favorite females lover list of all female player games I ever played with alice of alice in wonderland in second and gasha from aquaria in third. Come on, I won't believe you if you still ignore this game.
To be quite honest this is more of a yes and no vote on recommending this game. When I first picked it up I was quite put off by the stiff controls and shoved it to the side in the depths of my library to be forgotten for many years. After finally picking it back up, mainly from wanting to get 100% achievement on it, since I had already gotten a couple, I've grown quite fond of the game. You play as the savior of nature, or Earth. You are Scarygirl, an adopted child whose guardian seems to be an octopus. Also, you aren't quite normal yourself as at times do octopus like things too, but it never truly delves into who you are so much, so it's unknown. You go through 7 worlds, 21 levels total searching for the tree-dwellers who have been kidnapped and the world is now turning dark and evil. This is a platformer through and through. It play in a 2D space, you can't move forward or backwards other than choosing certain paths at forks in the road, but it is entirely in a 3D world where the camera will move around as the path weaves its way through the level. The levels are imaginative, have a variety of enemies to fight in each world, and progressively gets harder. You character is given simple attacks, normal attack and heavy attack. As you progress and gain gems, you can purchase new combos. Once you start using combos, you will better like the game and better enjoy the action sequences where it gets a bit more difficult later on. You have a whip arm of sorts that you can whip your enemies with. If you jump and hold on to jump, you will use the whip like a helicopter and fly for a short amount of time. The devs used these game gimmicks well to build their levels. There are a few bosses throughout the game. Some are much easier than others, but most have a definite strategy that is full-proof to lead to a win. Once you've figured it out, they aren't much of a challenge. The real challenge stands at not dying, collecting all gems, and killing all bad weeds. This gives you a "perfect" level. Getting perfect on all levels leads to the toughest achievement in the game. So I started with I like this game and I don't like this game. Let's now talk about the negative things about this game. It was not made to meet today's standard's of games, yet did not come out ages ago. It doesn't even go up to 1920x1080. I think the best was 1280xsomething, but it was a small box on my screen which didn't please and entertain me as much as a full screen experience offers. While the graphics were imaginative, they were also simple, though I did enjoy the various worlds (i.e. sewers, forest, underwater, city, etc...). Then there's the controls. The controls are way too tight for a platforming game. I eventually got used to them a bit better, but they are tough to deal with. At one point, you need to pick up a rock and hit a lever that is at 45 degrees to your right. I couldn't throw the rock at a 45 degree angle, no matter how hard I tried. I think once I was successful, but it missed the lever. I had to switch the controls over to the keyboard, use the keys to throw the rock at a 45 degree angle, and then switch back to a controller. This is not normal. These two things should have and could be fixed, but it was not. I could complain that the enemy AI was no good and that all enemies could be expected to behave a certain way, but I think that is somewhat par for the course for most platformers, and since there was a variety of enemies, that each one had their own tactics and that you just needed to know what they were in order to be successful. But, overall I felt that the charm of the game and the variety of worlds and characters, mixed with some good game gimmicks and good combos to learn made the game slightly above bad and in the good category. Either way, I had fun playing it and getting 100% of the achievement, maybe you would too. Just know, there are definitely much better platforming games out there for sure.
This is actually one of the first hack-and-slash/beat-em-up sidescrollers I ever followed and got excited for, back before I ever even knew Steam, or anything like it, even existed - and, before I even knew there to be a bilithbook this is based on. Now obviously, it's apparently relatively mid to everyone. Thanks for ruining me with standards, established game world. But to me back then looking at what few screenshots and videos I could find, this looked interesting and exciting to me, and like exactly the kind of weird I wanted to sample. Luckily for me, it's here now... and, while I can tell it's rough around the edges, it's actually really satisfying to me. The look of Scaryworld is just honestly impressive to me. It is darkly beautiful, and each environment looks like it at least whispers of a world that could be lived in, explored, escaped into. It's enough that I even was inspired to order in the Scarygirl bilithbook, although there's supposedly a whole trove of other comics about her that I don't know how to find. Scary Girl's origin manages to be a silly sort of dark, and a dark sort of silly. It may be very simple, but it makes me both laugh and scowl enough that I'd rather you experience it for yourself. If nothing else, know there *is* a story, complete with a recap of how Scary Girl came to live the life she does. As for fighting as her... it's very satisfying to me. It is flawed- controls are not always tight and they can be unintuitive- but when you get the hang of it, it is fun in the true way of fun, and I for one really feel like a cutesy, macabre manifestation of rage. This Frankenstein'd toddler's moveset is impressively well made, actually using her design- a stark contrast from other licensed, lower-budget games I've seen that would basically ignore the unique body parts or tools of the character you're supposed to play as in favor of ridiculously generic and unfitting moves. That tentacle arm with the hook at the end? You get to use that. A *lot*. You strike with it. You grab with it. You can even hold onto, carry around, and throw enemies with it like Klonoa's little sister- and it is *awesome*. There's another ability or two, but I'd rather not spoil them. The combo game in this... game is actually well-made and satisfying. Credit where it's due, I actually feel like getting a combo in this game is a successful use of the tools given us, and when I fail a combo, it seems in most cases like it's my fault. __ But there are flaws, make no mistake. Again, controls aren't the tightest and there is room for mistakes. The animation of almost all the creatures in the game- from Scary Girl herself, to enemies, to background characters- is in many cases (albiet less so for Scary Girl) stiff and the more awkward ilk of drifty. This is both an aesthetic setback, since it takes away some of that sense of surreal aliveness of the world and its denizens otherwise have; and a gameplay one, as it means that Scary Girl and her foes don't always broadcast their swifs right. The animations are a pretty good indicator of what's where, make no mistake, but not great, and for a fighting game where contact is key, that's a significant setback. Despite my liking for this game, I wouldn't blame any veteran fighting game enthusiasts for choosing to pass on Scary Girl based on that alone. Another setback is enemy variety. Now, having bought the bilithbook, I can tell you that the beings adapted therefrom are beautiful, easily the most impressive in the game, but to awend the original road-trip adventure tale into a beat-em-up, they have to make up new foes for Scary Girl... and while they definitely look compatible with the world, they're relatively bland and it kind of offsets the immersion for me. The variety is okay, but I also wish there were a whole lot more different types of enemies with unique gimmicks; you can only kill the same few kinds of animals so many times before you start to want for "Finally, a worthy opponent". Note: This next thing is only an issue for anyone who really wants to disappear into their game and morally forone with their avatar. For most sane gamers, skip to the next wordblock. I'm greatly bothered by the fact that quite a few levels in this game have Scary Girl attacking enemies first, when arguably her schtick as shown by the bilithbook is that underneath that creepy, undead skin is a gentle soul who just wants to enjoy a quaint quiet life, but also who needs to confront her fears. For her to just start murdering animals like this is like if main-universe Batman picked up a gun and just started capping people left and right. I really would have loved it if the developers had replaced the generic birds, sasquatches, etc. with robots or other undead sent by the Doctor character who serves as her nemesis and her reason for setting out. On that note I wish the plot would tie in more with the bilithbook's angle of them setting on a road trip, like maybe having a special fighting sequence on the roof of the car. That'd be epic and tie in just enough to prove the respect for the original work. However, I have to gainzecker, and I ask this of you too, to judge these flaws softly. To be fair, with this being a tie-in to the bilithbook, there's probably not as much pressure to make the game very tight as there would be for a completely original work- and, the team for this game were probably were as oblivious to their own talent as lactose intolerant cheesemakers. Relative to its circumstances, this is in my wen a game worth playing. It may not be an experience to truly disappear into and be wonderstruck by, given the room for bettering, but it outright gave me that empowering experience of being a hardcore fighter with an unusual body shape and fighting style, and if a sequel or reboot is ever announced, I guarantee you I'd be among the most eager to get in line for the newsletter and playtesting. Especially if they're the responsive sort who actually talk with their fans and wannabe-playtesters.
Pros: keyboard is supported (I have not tested the game’s support for controllers), cute art style & characters, charming soundtrack & narration, subtitles are on by default, tutorial available in-game (& a “how to play” screen on the menu. Although some in-game prompts are for the controller not the keyboard), checkpoints / auto saves Cons: locked at 30 frames per second, no 1080p resolution, no borderless windowed mode (only a small resolution 1280 x 1024p windowed mode or fullscreen is available), mouse is not supported even on the menu, no manual save slots, no difficulty settings (just one difficulty), no controls customization, maximum health is pretty low for me, movement is clunky, some camera angles are clunky, platforming is hit or miss, bosses don’t have health bars such as the yeti monster (it’s difficult to tell if you are fighting the bosses correctly. I had to Youtube the solution), boss fights are hit or miss, instant death scenarios in later levels Overall, I have bought this game on sale & have spent 4 hours as of the writing of this review. A mix of 2D & 3D map elements, some gameplay decisions are hit or miss but overall a fun experience at a low price. I stopped playing at the uninspired platforming section of the Onion Bar level. Scarygirl is a hit or miss
It's a working platformer. Pros ❃ If you like collecting things it has a steady supply of collectibles ❃ Accessible even if you are newer to platformers Cons ❃ The narration comes across as aimed at younger children which doesn't mesh with most of the gameplay ❃ Doesn't really add anything exciting to the genre ❃ It has controller support but wouldn't accept my left arrow for accessing the store despite all other controls working ❃ Doesn't seem to offer fullscreen and the windowed version is an awkward size/aspect ratio
I used to play the flash version on the website and its not kinda same ,but still scary and cute. But again I miss the flash version more when I think about this game.
