Great game, and super fun! But, seriously, this game needs a mute button. The music is driving me crazy after 30 minutes. I checked Settings and there's no buttons for audio, just screen size. The chiptune music will drive me bonkers long before the grind will.
Scarlett's Dungeon is a retro-styled dungeon crawler that blends classic action RPG sensibilities with procedural generation and roguelite structure. Developed and published by Hard Shark Games, it is clearly inspired by the portable-era dungeon adventures of the early 2000s, particularly the Game Boy Advance generation, and it wears that influence openly in both presentation and mechanical design. Rather than chasing modern spectacle or expansive storytelling, the game focuses on repetition, mastery, and the steady thrill of pushing deeper into a hostile dungeon that never unfolds the same way twice. The narrative setup is simple but effective, providing just enough motivation to contextualize the repeated dungeon dives. Scarlett, a young heroine from the quiet village of Palette, descends into an ever-changing dungeon after a dark entity abducts her family and fellow villagers. This straightforward rescue premise echoes classic fantasy RPG structures, but it functions primarily as framing rather than a driving force. The story rarely intrudes on gameplay, allowing players to focus on the immediacy of survival, combat, and progression rather than lengthy exposition. Gameplay revolves around fast-paced, top-down action combat combined with exploration of procedurally generated floors. Each run places Scarlett in a newly arranged dungeon filled with monsters, traps, and loot, encouraging adaptability rather than memorization. Combat emphasizes positioning and timing, requiring players to manage enemy patterns while making use of weapons, spells, and consumables found during each descent. The controls are responsive and easy to grasp, reinforcing the game’s accessibility while still allowing room for skillful play as enemy density and difficulty increase. As a roguelite, Scarlett’s Dungeon embraces repetition as a core feature rather than a flaw. Death is frequent, especially early on, but each run contributes to gradual progression through unlocked upgrades, new items, and increased familiarity with enemy behaviors. This loop creates a rhythm of experimentation and learning, where even failed attempts can feel productive. The procedural layout ensures that no two runs are identical, keeping tension high and preventing the dungeon from becoming predictable, even if the core mechanics remain consistent. Visually, the game adopts a clean and colorful pixel art style that strongly evokes handheld-era RPGs. Character sprites, enemies, and environments are simple but expressive, prioritizing clarity over detail. The top-down perspective ensures that combat remains readable even when multiple enemies crowd the screen, and the restrained animation style helps maintain performance and consistency. While the visuals lack the complexity or polish of more modern indie pixel art titles, they succeed in establishing a cohesive retro atmosphere that complements the gameplay. The difficulty curve is one of the more divisive aspects of Scarlett’s Dungeon. The game does not shy away from punishing mistakes, and certain dungeon layouts or enemy combinations can feel overwhelming, especially without favorable item drops. For some players, this challenge is a core part of the appeal, reinforcing the sense of danger and achievement that comes with surviving a deep run. For others, the balance may feel uneven, with difficulty spikes that rely more on luck than skill, highlighting the inherent volatility of procedural design. Audio design supports the retro identity with simple, looping tracks and classic-style sound effects that reinforce the dungeon-crawling mood. Music provides a steady sense of urgency without becoming intrusive, while combat sounds deliver clear feedback for attacks, damage, and item use. Though not especially varied or memorable, the soundtrack does its job effectively, reinforcing the game’s nostalgic tone and mechanical focus. In terms of scope, Scarlett’s Dungeon is intentionally modest. It does not aim to deliver a long-form narrative, elaborate character systems, or sprawling worlds. Instead, it offers a tightly contained experience built around repeated, increasingly efficient dungeon runs. This makes it well suited for short play sessions, where players can jump in for a few attempts, make incremental progress, and step away without losing momentum. Overall, Scarlett’s Dungeon is a focused and earnest roguelite action RPG that appeals most strongly to fans of retro dungeon crawlers and procedural challenge. Its strengths lie in its clear mechanical loop, nostalgic presentation, and commitment to replayability, even if its rough edges and limited depth prevent it from standing alongside genre-defining titles. For players who appreciate old-school action RPG design and enjoy refining their skills through repeated dungeon dives, Scarlett’s Dungeon offers a satisfying, no-frills adventure that understands its roots and plays to them confidently. Scarlett's CTDungeon.
D

Fun little game
