Samurai Riot: ~~~~~~~~~~~ The War between the clans of True Honor and Horizons has been going on for many years. The Great Master of the clan of True Honor has appointed Tsuramaru as his Art of War advisor and this move seems to have turned the tide of this war towards his clan. However, the plan to infiltrate a rebel threshold on his own province has failed and this gives a slight hope for the Horizons clan! And that’s not all . . . there are few twists to discover in Samurai Riot! Samurai Riot is a 2D Beat’em up arcade game where you control either one of the warriors, Tsuramaru or Sukane, in single player mode, or play with one of your friends on the same computer in a cooperative mode. Whichever character you choose to play in the single player mode, a cut-scene will follow with the warrior you have chosen, reflecting what it could have been just before his/her death. Then the game will start at the Castle of the True Honor Clan. The reason for this cut-scene is that the game offers eight different endings (including the two endings for whichever warrior you choose to play) and you might change their fate. You will also have to choose a warrior school before starting the game. There are eleven in total but only four will be available for selection on your first game play. You‘ll be able to unlock them later on but it will cost coins to do so. The school will determine what your warrior is good at and if he/she has special abilities. The main school threads are: health, strength, agility and fury. Each of these threads has five bars. If you have five highlighted bars on your health thread it will mean that the school you have chosen will give your warrior more life, and so on and so forth. Tsuramaru will fight with a katana and he will be kicking opponents too. He has a grenade as a special weapon which can kill enemies very quickly if you throw them well and at the right time. He will also be able to throw knives in mid-air. Sukane is a master of martial arts and will fight with her fists and feet. She has a pet fox who has great attacks. He can also attack in mid-air, become a bomb or charge towards enemies on the ground. The only downside with the pet is each time you use one of his attacks it will take up to a minute (depending which one) for the fox to re-appear. In terms of enemies, the generic ones are baton warriors, lance warriors, ninja warriors with guns, sumos, turtle warriors and armed women. That’s basically it throughout eight of the levels until you reach the mini boss of the stage. The colour of the uniform will tell you how difficult they’ll be to eliminate. Make sure to destroy pots, rocks, telephone boots and more, as they hide either new life, sushi (which regenerates your health) coins or other goodies. Each stage will take you roughly between fifteen to twenty minutes to clear. The gameplay is really fun and very well done, in my opinion. You’ll have two swords at the top. One will represent your health and each time you are hit it will get darker from left to right until it reaches the handle and then your character will lose a life. The other sword represents the fury ability; for each hit you successfully inflict, it will charge the sword and you’ll be able to activate the fury ability. You can have up to three fury charges at any given time. As you progress within the game, you’ll have to make a few choices and they’ll lead you to the different endings, which offers great replay-ability (and this is apart from the four levels of difficulty available at the start of the game). Graphically, I really enjoy the 2D artwork. The soundtrack is pretty good and the controls work fine. Positives: ~~~~~~~ - Good graphics - Four levels of difficulties - Eight stages to clear with bosses at the end - Eight different endings - Great controls Negatives: ~~~~~~~~ - I would have liked to have more generic enemies - No achievements or trading cards Samurai Riot is a fun 2D Beat’em up with great re-playability. If you like this genre of game, you won’t be disappointed. 7/10 Key provided by developer/publisher for review purposes. Any opinions expressed are entirely my own! Very barebones co-op beat'em'up with oldschool difficulty and flair. Beat up lots of identical looking enemies with way too much hp and little to no variety. Get it on sale and don't expect too much and you may eventually have a good time.
Had this on my wishlist searching for similar games to Castle Crashers. I wouldn't say it's similar, but it definitely reminded me of playing games like Double Dragon or Battletoads back in the day, just with better controls, nice artwork, etc. If you like "Beat 'em ups" this one is worth the $15 IMHO and if it's on sale consider it a steal! Being most games usually give an intro/tutorial on the controls (this one doesn't currently), I feel it's worth mentioning the PAUSE menu is your friend in this game. It'll show you all sorts of combos (similar to newer Mortal Kombat games and their pause menu).
Really fun beat 'em up game. Game wants you to make a choice at the key points of the story and according to your choices, you'll encouter with 7 different endings. Gameplay is simple, yet really fun. You can choose one of the two characters at the beggining. Also, game has Local Multiplayer. Online Multiplayer would be better, but it's still good. Just like the other Beat 'em up games, you encounter waves of enemies and proceed to next stage. It can sound repetitive, but i didn't got bored from playing it in my first hour. I also have a Curator page and reviewed Samurai Riot on it. I'd be grateful if you could take a look at it and follow. http://steamcommunity.com/groups/akusarireview#curation
I have tried this a few times now. Loaded up fine, was pretty good played two players with Xbox one controllers. The control scheme is great the theme and art style are complimented by a cool soundtrack. but the game crashes on the regular. Sometimes after a minute, sometimes after a full level. One thing you know for sure though is it will crash and when it does it is a bad freeze your PC crash, refuse to close the programme through task-manager crash. Reboot your PC and punish you for thinking you can play the game you paid for type of crash. The crash is confined to this one game, so I know it isn't my PC. It is a shame but in it's current state (20/02/2018) it is unplayable without the threat of being booted. 0/10 wouldn't be forced to restart PC again.
Loving this game so far! The music especially. It perfectly suits the vibe of the story and the pace of the gameplay. The controls are easy to grasp (though I know some people are still gonna say a tutorial would have been nice, and I was a little surprised there wasnt one, I found myself not missing it all that much). The art style is quite good, the sound effects are competent, and you can tell the devs really care about this labor of love. If you like beat em ups, youll love this game. If you like Samurai, youll love this game. If you like breakable set pieces with raccoons hiding in them, Youll ADORE this game. Highly recommended!
Clunky controls, cringey weeaboo writing, music puts me to sleep. Why can't I remap the shoulder button actions to triggers? (they are remapped, but still work only on buttons) Instead of a grab or a throw you get a weird immobilizing chain move. The moveset seems limited even for a beat'em'up, unfortunately. It's just a lot of running through repetitive and needlessly empty environments, beating up annoying enemies. Not all are bad, but ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ the kappa. And when you think it's over, they throw in more kappa. Some items that fall out of destructible terrain can be picked up, a lot of them can't. Why? Both seem to be able to be stolen by those weird tanuki (?). There are no temporary weapons (that I found), or cool environmental interactivity. (no kicking or throwing people into things, or off places etc.) Maybe get this if you really love beat'em'ups and wanna play a new one.
Being a 80's kid myself i've played a whole stack of beat em ups in my time, growning up playing the likes of Streets of Rage & Golden Axe so its nice to see a new game coming out in 2017 with a updated version of a classic game genre & i think they pull it off well. One thing they did do which i really liked is they put alot of thought into the storyline, instead of making it very linear they actually have it so when you get to certain ponits in the story you have to make moral choices, depending how you pick thoughout these choices you will get one of 8 different endings so there should be a good amount of playablity there with this, to add a extra twist to this when in co op if you & your partner disagree on the moral choice it turns into a PvP fight & who ever wins gets to pick the story route They offer full controller support which is great, the conrtols are really smooth & the art style is really nice. It is 2player co op however that is local co op only but on the whole seems to be a great little game.
Mixed feelings at best, but id recommend. The game has an interesting story with endings that you earn with your actions changing almost everything. Also the story makes sure the choices you make are hard ones. there are no right answers, no clear path, just your honest to god morals where you always lose something. in this case the game is fantastic! Except the enemies, and there lies the biggest problem. The enemies themselves never change regardless of the story. Took down the revolutions leader? still see her men. Join the revolution? Still fight her men.... nothing seems to change outside the bosses. The real problem is the enemy ai who will spam the same attack over and over like your 6 year old nephew in tekken. easy enough to get around but.... really tedious to deal with constantly. All n all its fun with a friend but i would get it on a sale.
