Absolute masterpiece and also a shltpost of a game. On one hand you have those amazing, bizzare worlds that put you into different thoughts, its a journey not only with sally but also yourself. On the other hand you have a handful of jokes spread throughout the game (pretty funny ones if i say so myself.) On the third (nuclear) hand you have the amazing platforming (although its a bit slippery but you do get used to it) and powerups that you get throughout the game and multiple puzzles and secrets. Heading into the ending i was sure this game will be a solid 7-8 out of 10 but the ending completely blew my mind. While i do understand why some people might dislike the game, if you enjoy games like yume nikki and others of its kind, DEFINETLY DO TRY SALLY CANT SLEEP. simply put - masterful piece of art.
incredible, incredible game. fantastic ambience, fun and complex platforming with a ridiculously high skill ceiling, levels that are open ended and fun to explore (almost no invisible walls to be found), and a fun surreal sense of humour also, personally, i think the game looks great. rough around the edges maybe, but also charming and creative and SOULFUL, much richer in character than games with a billion times the polygons and way more advanced pore rendering technology. the developer clearly understands how to work within shoestring budget indie limitations, embracing an endearing low fidelity indie jank to build something big, ambitious, creative, and genuinely fun to play it took me just about nine hours to finish the game, which, 1. is a lot of playtime for such a cheap 3D platformer, and 2. wasn't because of filler, or constant reuse of content, or procedural generation, or anything like that. in fact, i only had 109 feathers by the time the credits rolled. there's a huge interconnected world to explore, each populated with secrets and challenges, and every area has a distinct tone and style that sets it apart from the rest. the game never gets stale, and there are plenty of optional challenges if you want more the platforming is great, with more of a focus on player freedom and experimentation than balance. the starting abilities abilities alone let you execute a lot of clever, tricky manoeuvres, and there are even more scattered around the game world. if i had to make a complaint, it's that some of those abilities trivialise the platforming a bit too much, but even in this case it makes them feel like a reward for progress and exploration, ways to complete seemingly insurmountable challenges in previous levels with ease. you can also toggle any ability you unlock on and off, if it makes the game too easy for you i could gush about this game for hours, but I'm not sure it would make a very good review. long story short, if you like platformers or surreal exploration games, buy the game. without a single hint of irony, it is my favourite game of the year so far, on any platform
I honestly had a lot of fun so far with Sally Can't Sleep. This game carries a certain surreal vibe I can't put into words and the amount of inception level traveling here is incredible. There's so much to explore and every world is so vastly different from the one before. The low-poly look combined with 2d sprites and the reddit-esque humor makes this experience special and you can tell a lot of love went into this. The traversal mechanics are hard to get used to IMO and are challenging, you basically have to think beforehand about what you want to do before pulling it off. [strike]But ultimately the reason why I currently cannot recommend the game is the frustrating amount of times you fall out of bounds and lose your progress since your last save. It happened to me 7 or 8 times now and it just happens so randomly. One time I was on a flat surface and from one second to the other I just fell through, or the other time where I was in
marble
mode at high speed and went through a tunnel wall. Every single time I just fall to oblivion and lose all the feathers I collected and the challenges I beat, because the only option I have is to go back to the menu and load from the last save. Until this has been fixed, I can't recommend Sally Can't Sleep.[/strike] Just press K
EDIT: I got my 100 feathers. It was worth it. Listen, you need to do the tutorial. I know. "That's for the weak, I know what WASD are", but this game is actually a very tricky momentum platformer and if you don't jive with the tutorial you are going to not enjoy your time. I can't think of a game like this besides Maybe Mirror's Edge, except Mirror's Edge was a lot more straightforward and didn't expect you to pull off triple jumps. I can't honestly say if the advanced movement mechanics are required to get an ending but they sure are required for some challenges. If you make it past the tutorial, I'd suggest not worrying about feathers until you got some abilities. Take the freebies but don't stress over the challenges, some really expect you to have buttons or be really good at some mechanics. I personally turned on assist mode just to get out of some of the starting areas with fewer gray hairs. Beyond that, it's a real neat game. I didn't get too far yet but frankly this is more intense than I thought and I'm getting hand pains... I'll have my vengance yet. Two gripes: you can only save at save points. I'm not sure why, maybe to prevent people from softlocking themselves? There is also no fast travel/bail to previous world/bail to start button in the menu. I don't mind a little backtracking but a way to immediately go back to start so I can take a different path would be nice.
good game
I haven't played much but from what I have played, this game is a fun, unique, and hilarious platformer oozing with charm. Highly recommended.
Incredible game with a fantastic move set but what really kept me playing was the vibe. Even if you aren't great at platformers (god knows I'm not) I'd recommend this game just to explore each of the levels. It IS fairly challenging though and even with the built in assist mode and a grappling hook I found in a level I struggled to reach 100/100 feathers needed to complete the game. But if you're a platformer vet and want a game packed with content and speedrun potential this is an easy recommendation.
Great game. Would recommend. Great moments within the game.
lovely atmosphere, fun game, great value for the price if you're into surreal exploration i probably won't ever 100% but that's fine as it's a very enjoyable experience just to explore the world and the platforming is a lot of fun to experiment with the scenery, the sounds, and the strangeness all mesh together to create a very comforting mood i like that you're free to explore and enjoy the environments at your own pace - there's no pressure to complete the harder challenges but they encourage you to spend time in and fully explore each area biggest complaint i have is the save system... you can only save at save points and some areas require backtracking if you want to exit without losing your progress... i would have liked a save on exit feature
