Follow our curator page, Alexander's Club Curations if you like and want to see more reviews like this one.
Killer Chambers is a nostalgic trip into the hellish landscape of bullet hell platformer with Charming characters consisting of a pixelated Deadpool and a creepy grandpa.
In a Nutshell
Killer Chambers is a bullet hell platformer where your best weapon is that you can resurrect yourself at the beginning of the level - over and over again. Developed by Village bench, this 16-bit little game will make you test your eye hand-coordination at a whole new level. It is a game where death isn’t merely failure, it is a mechanic. You are going to die, a lot, and you are going to be told how many times you have died. But somehow, you will still go back and replay it again, even after failing…repeatedly. Pros: [olist]
Charming Characters
Challenging as hell
Exhilarating
Rewarding
Easy to learn, difficult to master
High replay value with high rewards
Highly “Twitch”-able [/olist] Cons: [olist]
Too Challenging as hell.
Some deaths can seem unfair. [/olist]
What are Killer Chambers?
It is a 2D platformer that combines with bullet hell elements where your objective is not to run from the obstacles, but to survive them in over 40 rooms of varying shapes and sizes while collecting 12 hats and many tools to ease your pain. You play as an immortal wizard – let us call him “Sir Die-a-Lot” – whose primary ability is to resurrect himself when he dies. Each room has arrow traps that you are going to have to jump, duck, and platform to survive. Death leads to resurrection of the player, and the room.
Characters
Normally, with games like these, you expect for there to be something extra when it comes to characters and Killer Chambers delivers. Sir Die-a-lot is a trying-to-be-funny guy that is aware of his hits and misses. Similarly, the other major Character called Ghost reminds me of a grumpy grandpa that possibly loves you, but still torments you in funny ways, or deadly funny ways in this case.
Gameplay

You have three primary controls: Moving, jumping and using the items. Gameplay is relatively simple and you have to use them to survive the traps within a room. Get hit by a single trap and you get a cursed point, accumulate enough curse points shall transport you into a cursed room. Clearing difficult rooms shall give you a sense of catharsis that is only triumphed by cleaning the next room.
There are 40 rooms in total and after a certain set of rooms, there is a boss room. Completing the boss room clear the floor. Clearing all floors aka clearing all rooms clears the palace.
Each room has three difficulties, successfully tackling easy one gives you different rewards. Firs one will grant you a silver key to let you enter the next room. Second one shall give you gold coins and the third one will reward you with gems. You can use these as currency to buy items to help you clear more challenging platforming sections. This multi-level characteristic can motivate players to revisit a level over and over again, giving the game a replay value intertwined with the mechanics of the game.
Expect to die a lot and expect to stay cursed for a long time, because it won’t be called “surviving the room” if it wasn’t challenging. You are going to die a lot, even if the pixel of your character ever so slightly touches the pixel of the traps. So, collect all the hats if you can. Each hat gives a new characteristic to not just you, but the level itself. it can seem a bit unfair at times. There are times where I was sure that my character was in the position that couldn’t be touched by the arrow, but It was a miscalculation on my part. It is just a minor issue that is up to the player to overcome.

Graphics and Performance
It is a pixelated 2D platformer. So, you know that graphics are the very definition of old school. However, it is mordernized through the implementation of 60 fps and varying shaky effects. It is charming and the colours are easy on the eyes. On my oddly jacked up rig, this game played like a beautiful sonnet – never glitching, never disappointing, always moving.
The Price is RIGHT!
At just $ 3.99, you get the value of your money. It is small game with a lot of heart and if you are not a platforming enthusiast in particular, it is difficult enough to last you for a long time depending upon your skill level. On an average, completing the floors are going to take you about 7 to 8 hours. However, we have seen instances where it took players 15 hours to complete the game.
Conclusion
Pixel platformers like Killer Chambers almost always give you that Nostalgic feeling, and when the price is right, there is not much bad to say about the game. It is indeed a challenging task to go through with it to its completion. But it is still rewarding and a lot of fun. For twitch streamers who want to showcase their good or bad skills, this game is entertainment gold courtesy of its quirky characters and oddly self-aware gameplay. That is why, I give this game a 9.2/10. This product was reviewed using a free key provided by the Developers.

Killer Chambers is an extremely difficult game, but it has a lot to offer if you don't mind the challenge. It plays more like a bullet-hell platformer because the rooms don't have a lot of space, you must have decent reflexes if you planning on beating it (definitely not for casuals). Actually, if you are playing poorly, the game will punish you further, by forcing you to play even harder levels. It has a good sense of humor, including a story that is fun to follow. It's somewhat repetitive but there are some interesting twists on gameplay, such as consumable items and hats that give special powers. You can also do some optional challenges to gain gold and gems, they serve as the currency in the store. I only just passed the first boss, but I can already tell that it has a lot of content, especially at such a low price. Normally I try to beat games before I review them, but I might have to take a few breaks with this one, it can get a little frustrating.
Pros:
+ enjoyable story, nice sense of humor + optional challenges + consumable items, hats with powers + boss fights + many achievements
Cons:
- The only big problem I have is the way the bosses work. At least the first one had a pattern, but when you die it can start sooner, so it will screw up your timing completely. You can avoid that if you reset the level each time which makes it 10 times easier, so I think that boss should always start from the beginning. - There are some hard levels that you must play if you die a lot. Which is funny because the game gives you a middle finger, but it gets old. Maybe you should get some gold each time you beat it, just so you don't spend 20 minutes learning a pattern for something that is there to waste time. Overall Thoughts : 8/10 It's definitely a good game, I am just not 100% sure if I will have the patience or skill to get through it. I think it's a very creative way of making a hardcore platformer, aside from being ***** hard, I do like it. You getting a lot of content for a low price with this one (a lot of frustrating content in tiny rooms, but content nevertheless). Really cool game! Really nice humour and art style, the game play is unique but crazy hard. I truly suck at this game but It's great non the less!
Truly the Dark Souls of bullet hell games. But in all seriousness it's a pretty good game. Each level poses a good challenge without unfair elements. The trap patterns interesting and show a nice level of variety. Figuring out the best way to position yourself to best survive each room becomes almost like a puzzle. The rhythm of each room can be almost musical at times, naturally allowing you to accurately predict when the next attack will be arriving. You automatically restart immediately after death, so you can quickly start your next attempt without needing waste time going through an unnecessary menu. Controls are responsive and precise. Mechanics do a great job of creating a solid foundation to build off of. This means that new projectile types are used to compliment those that have been previously established, rather than being used entirely independently. The game has a good learning curve, giving plenty of time to introduce concepts so the player has plenty of time to grow accustomed to them, but not overstaying their welcome. The game can be completed by doing each room on only the first difficulty, and well rewards the player for attempting the challenge. The two higher difficulties also do a great job of resembling the base patterns, while still mixing in interesting twists and challenges. The dialogue is light-hearted and entertaining, with each character having a well fleshed out personality. I find the ghost as a great example of this depth. Our protagonist has less than wholesome motives at times, and finds danger humorous due to his inexplicable immortality. Contrasting this, the villain is making clear efforts to appear evil, but is suggested to have a morally righteous conscience. As such, he is often thrown off by the "hero's" greed and reckless abandon, and drops his bad guy act in order to issue valid complaints. TL;DR: Definitely a game with great value that exceeds its price. Would personally recommend.
started playing it while the last few things were getting fixed but it made me forget completely that i have sekiro ready waiting for me (I've got the game the same day sekiro was released) i only managed to get through the first 2 worlds at the moment of this review the first few levels can be a bit rough on you, at least till you get used to the mechanics but after a bit of practice all the fun comes out of it and it gets rewarding I found the variety in the shops, with all the items and the hats that you can change, very entertaining, both to suffice various play styles and to fashion up the hero for as little as it could be, not everyone wants to wear a top hat ahahah there are some harder levels you are forced to play if you fail hard but i somehow liked them cause they gave you a break from repeating the same level endlessy till you inevitably rage (saving your controller from the flying lesson) It has a few sweet achievements that are fun to get (like the bunny hop) and a lot of quotes to get the story entertaining the devs really payed attention to details on those ahahahahah OVERALL i can't really say there are any cons cause the game is definitely worth the price it's full of content and it's a nice brake from those Triple-A games we are playing everyday
It's honestly a very well made game, but I just personally find the core gameplay mechanic to be not fun. It is game that forces you to memorize. There is a reaction element to some extent, but eventually you will hit your limit of what you can react to and that is when it becomes about memorization and the game no longer becomes fun, at least for me personally. All of the deaths ultimately end up feeling like "cheap" deaths, which are always the worst kind of deaths in games. You don't die because you did it wrong necessarily, its more that you died because you didn't know and there is no way you could have known ahead of time. All games have this to some extent, but that is literally all this game is. Maybe if the game somehow implemented a Tetris style "preview" screen where the game showed you ahead of time what the next sequence was going to be, then the game would be less about memorization. But this would be super hard to implement in a way that could be useful. Overall again, I just want to say again that the game is extremely well made for what it is. I personally just do not enjoy the primary gameplay loop of die, memorize, repeat. Its not a matter of difficulty, because I really only play games for the challenge primarily. This type of "difficulty" though is just not enjoyable IMO. The description for the game says "Nothing is left to chance, every trap pattern is made to be challenging yet fun to solve but quick reflexes alone will not be enough to survive." This basically sums it up. You will die because the game is designed around the assumption that you will die(repeatedly) and eventually memorize the level patterns. Your reflexes will not be enough. UPDATE: decided to go back to the game after a couple years to try it again, honestly still just extremely obnoxious gameplay. I ended up making it to world 4 out of 5 and I'm dropping the game again because the game just feels annoying and time wasting. Being forced to just die over and over to maybe see the next pattern you need to try and remember is just so bad.
Killer Chambers is a well made difficult 2D platformer that will make you TEAR YOUR HAIR OUT.. If you decide to perfect every level that is! Gameplay consist of you surviving the level's timer by jumping, running, and ducking your way out of danger. You'll have to avoid numerous hazards such as arrows. Every stage has 3 difficulty levels that provide various rewards upon completion. One to progress the story, earn coins for consumable help, and gems for permanent hats that change up gameplay! It's quite fun and it's worth a look at!
