Zelda: Link's Awakening and A Link to the Past are two of my favorite games ever, and I guess this is also true for Pixel Trash. The absolute majority of gameplay elements of Saga of the Moon Priestess are copied from the 2D Zelda games, including all the weapons, the graphics style, pushing blocks, bombing walls etc. The story and design of the overworld, dungeons, enemies and bosses are unique though, which makes this game worth playing as well. Saga of the Moon Priestess does many things right: the game plays great, there's a nice retro vibe all over it and most of the dungeons and bosses are really fun. On the other hand, this game lacks lacks the charm and the clever dungeon design of the Zelda games. Link's Awakening stays always on my mind thanks to stuff like Marin, the flying rooster, bowbow the dog and the mysterious egg on top of the mountain. This game lacks such memorable moments. There are some nice puzzles in the dungeons (especially the icy one), but also some annoying ones: putting 30 rocks in a room and hiding a button under one of them isn't quite fun. It is also rather annoying that you can't see which rooms you've already visited in a dungeon once you found the map. Despite these issues, I enjoyed playing this game until the end. Recommended for fans of Zelda, but I'm not sure for anyone else.

As a young heroine Sarissa, saves the prince. Zelda-like gameplay reminds us of the retro golden days! Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oevUmMOzGzU
I can't bring myself to finish the last dungeon. I'm familiar with Zelda games: I've done randomizer runs of Link to the past, and I have some Zelda-like games in my Steam inventory. I don't dislike this game because it's short, or because it's an indie. I have to manually equip the gloves to use them. It's so annoying. Not to mention picking up rocks feels sluggish. Movement feels like it's done through molasses too, and there's no boots to save you. You're also going to be walking out of dungeons when you beat them instead of being teleported to the outside. The swing is dreadful, and you're going to get a lot of bats later that like to come at you from an angle. When you get hit, your iframes don't last long. I had a non-zero amount of stunlock deaths. You have to equip the gloves instead of them being automatic. So needlessly annoying, just let me pick up the rocks. Why make the rock pickup so slow? Imagine Link to the past but every small rock lifts like a large rock. Annoying, right? I don't dislike this for being a small Zelda-like. I dislike it because I loathe the lack of qol (I should not have to equip gloves manually). Some of the dungeon rooms felt kinda whatever because I could just walk around enemies but I overall liked the dungeon designs + maps. I just hate the slow movement and wasting my time.
There is the shell of a good game here, but it's sullied by some quality of life problems. The very slow walking speed, with no way to run or fast travel, makes it an absolute chore any time you need to backtrack (which is often). There are also several "puzzles" that are designed to frustrate, such as having to pick up rocks (sloooowwwllly) one at a time to find the one that has a switch underneath it -- a puzzle which gets repeated across dungeons! A few small changes would turn this game into a just-barely-thumbs-up from me, but as is, I can't recommend it.
A Really Good Spin-off of The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX.
Joke aside ➤ The graphics and soundtrack are excellent, a certain nostalgia reigns here. It will remind you all the hours you spent on GameBoy Color/Advance. Works great on the Steam Deck. ✅

Decent Zelda-like that's short and sweet. Protip: The ice dungeon has a hidden bombable wall that isn't marked as other bombable walls are. Not cool, but now you know.
Meh, I appreciate the effort but, unfortunately, it’s not a particularly good game. Not particularly bad either, but it has too many flaws that make it a bit of a chore to play even with its short duration. Directions on where to go and what to do are vague at best, and often non-existent. You can go out of order, and advance for a while before being blocked by the need for some weapon or tool available in a different dungeon. While this isn’t bad per se, it becomes a problem when the backtracking is an absolute slog - character move super slowly, and combat is boring and repetitive. There a few block puzzles that only allow you to push the specific blocks the devs want you to push. These blocks look exactly the same as the non-pushable ones, which leads to lots of useless guesswork. Graphics are mediocre at best. I normally love pixel art, but here everything looks bland and uninspired. That being said, there’s also some fun to be had. Boss fights are kinda fun, solving dungeons is satisfactory, and soundtrack is nice.
Saga of the Moon Priestess: A Nostalgic Adventure with Some Rough Edges Saga of the Moon Priestess is a retro-inspired, top-down action-adventure game that harkens back to the days of the NES and SNES. It follows the story of Sarissa, a young moon priestess tasked with rescuing the kidnapped prince and restoring balance to the world of Lunaria. Here's a breakdown of the game's key aspects: Positives: Appealing Retro Aesthetic: The game boasts charming pixel art graphics and a soundtrack that evokes classic adventure titles. Familiar Gameplay: If you enjoyed Zelda-like games, you'll find familiar mechanics like dungeon exploration, enemy combat, and item collection. Decent Content: With 5 dungeons, various items to collect, and secrets to uncover, the game offers a good amount of content for the budget price. Negatives: Repetitive Gameplay: While familiar, the core gameplay loop can become repetitive, especially for those expecting more depth or innovation. Limited Combat: Combat feels basic and lacks complexity, potentially making encounters monotonous. Technical Issues: Some players have reported minor technical glitches and frame rate drops. Overall: Saga of the Moon Priestess is a competent love letter to classic action-adventure games. However, its repetitive gameplay and lack of innovation might not appeal to everyone. If you're looking for a charming and affordable retro experience, it's worth considering. But if you crave deeper mechanics and a more modern experience, you might want to look elsewhere. Here are some additional details to consider: Platforms: PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch Genre: Action-Adventure Price: Budget-friendly Critic Scores: Reviews range from average to positive, with praise for the aesthetics and nostalgia but criticism for the repetitiveness and lack of depth.
