Underrated VN. There's already many well-written reviews so, beh. It's great!
My first VN in a year and a half. Didn't read for a while, so I wasn't sure what to expect going in. And honestly? I still don't fully know how I feel about it. But yes — I recommend it. There's no doubt in my mind when saying that. Just don't go in expecting some life-changing experience. There are 6 routes in the game. I finished 3, scraped the surface of a 4th, then called it quits out of boredom. The only route I genuinely enjoyed was my first one. I'm a simple guy when it comes to VNs with different heroines. Give me decent writing and some wholesome fan-service, and I'm happy. My first route (Tix) delivered exactly that. She was the character I liked most in the main route, so I chased her, and it paid off. Decent writing, wholesome fan-service ending, "they lived happily ever after" type — just how I like it. That alone made the purchase worth it. Then I did Eris's route. The writing here was probably the best and most entertaining out of the bunch, but the latter stages and the ending left me cold. After that I briefly tried Rei and Eth but just couldn't get into either of them, so I moved on to the only other girl that caught my eye — Jorou. Finished her route, but the writing felt noticeably weaker, and the ending, while more-or-less happy, left a bitter taste. Like, author, at least throw in a hint that she's romantically interested in the MC before fading to black. Something. Anything. And yes, I didn't touch the two main girls' routes. Guess I'm into side characters, huh. This game is primarily about lore and learning the rules of its fantasy world, not your usual romantic VN fare. I knew that going in from other reviews, and I still enjoyed the reading — just mostly with a straight face. It didn't disappoint me, but it didn't blow me away either. I'll give credit where it's due, though. I'm very hard to please.

Interesting story, and the romance is decent. It's kind of disappointing there's been no continuation of the stories for Eth or the spider-girl whose name I forget, because they were my favorite romances, but maybe that'll be addressed in the full sequel. Which I'm looking forward to. Also, I have no recollection of having put 196 hours into this game. I have no doubt it's true, because computers are wrong a lot less often than I am, but... ¿When'd that happen?
Already played it, but decided to also buy it on Steam in anticipation for the sequel, Sable's Grimoire 2. If Sable's Grimoire seems like the sort of thing that might interest you, I suggest you give it a try!
It's alright.
Honestly, this is a great game and interesting in that while it has 2 "Romance" routes it also has 4 "Non-Romance" routes and - especially Jojorou's route - teaches you a lot about the world. Of the Romance Routes, I find Drakan to be far more fun and her afterstory "A Dragons Treasure" to be very interesting. Rei and Eth are hilarious, I love Eth especially. Buy the game, then there can be a second one.
Sable's Grimoire Recommended Length: Medium (10-30 Hours) Number of Routes: 6 (5 Single, 1 Multi-character) Length of Avg. Route: 3 Hours Choices: Yes Failure Possible: Yes Character Rating: Good Story Progression: Very Good Chaotic Elements: Yes / Minor (can be avoided) Music Rating: Good Achievement Difficulty: 1 Additional Thoughts: With a pretty good story line with multiple endings (19 in total), good characters and a interesting setting. Overall it makes for a pretty decent novel. There is a post story segment in which setups some threads for the upcoming sequel.
Decided to rewrite my review after at least playing through this game at least once. It's a fun little game that treads a familiar path, but does it in a way that doesn't make you hate the protagonist. Or have everything devolve into a poorly written harem. Instead your put into the shoes of a diligent 'albeit a bit know at all cynical shut-in' student named Sable. That actually wants to be there and learn; Not try his luck in getting with his classmates. (the trope has been played out so much, that it has tropes of it being a trope) That actually has the player learn certain things about other characters. Not just the 'feelings' of whoever's path your currently on. But ends just as things start to get interesting. Edit: Recently heard of a sequel to this game, that will coming out later this year. So, I figured I should finally get around to finishing the rest of the routes. And well yeah, some are better than others. Some leave things open for the sequel and/or DLC that come out later. While others don't really give a very satisfactory conclusion. I originally planned on giving an insight of all the routes, but figured that would spoil too many aspects of the game. That being said, I still recommend this game and despite it's few short comings. It is still overall a great game.
