Crim's Humble Opinion Curator
Calming & Minimal Puzzle
Ruya is a simple matching puzzle game. You are presented with a shape on the top that you have to create. Using the creatures on the grid you have to not only make the shape but also worry about which colors you are matching. You can also drop creatures on the grid in a connect four like style. You are shown what color is going to be the next color which is extremely helpful. Later some challenges such as ice or limited moves presents themselves, but for the most part just clearing levels is not highly difficult. There are 8 worlds with 8 levels each which will keep you occupied for quite a while.
Extra challenge possible
You have your goal each level of unfreezing things and collecting enough of each color; but you also have a side goal for achievements to collect all bonus flowers. These bonus flowers are thrown down with the creatures at points and can sometimes be challenging to get them all. I never noticed an indicator as to when you obtained all of them which would have been nice, but getting them all posed a fun challenge. The music and art style is just as calming as the gameplay. The landscapes are diverse and interesting. The music and soundscapes have a very relaxing and no rush feeling. The story is cute. It's not the strongest point in the game but still accompanies everything else well. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1556244908 For a low asking price of four dollars this is worth the time and money if you enjoy matching puzzle games. The full game took me close to 6 hours to complete and unlock everything which is more than I thought I would have received out of the title. For the relaxing gameplay, worthwhile content, and accompanying artistic design I can easily recommend this title.
[th] Review by Gaming Masterpieces - The greatest games of all time on Steam. [/th]
Is this game a masterpiece? Hm, it is a simple, but well executed puzzle game. Play an old meditating hag with antlers on her head and dreaming of her past life. 8 worlds with 8 levels each need to be finished by building given patterns with heads without running out of turns. No time limit, rather relaxing. Conclusion: Interesting, calm matching game if you can't see the 08/15 Match-3 games anymore.

64 levels in 8 worlds await in this matching game, both unlocked one by one. the goal is to match enough of each color by creating tetris-like shapes shown on the top left. the current shape is the only valid move (directions don't matter) and you can decide when and where the next piece should fall, though there are slanty tiles and frozen blocks that limit (or expand) possibilities. the next piece and the one after are shown above, so you can plan ahead a bit. there's a mandatory move limit, dropping a piece doesn't count, only matching. the limit can be extended by matching bubbled pieces. the 3-flower rating doesn't do anything, a level is complete even without getting any, but you have to keep matching until all 3 flowers have randomly appeared and got matched, risking running out of moves or painting yourself into a corner, and reshuffling when there's no valid match costs a move and can remove flowers from the board. as usual, cute-looking game stabs you in the back. I don't recall any matching game penalizing for a reshuffle, unless there's no reshuffle at all, which is just as bad. another less than ideal thing is how rating is only shown by slightly bigger flowers among a bunch of other ones on top, took me way too long to realize. there are 3 dots above the move counter, for crying out loud, why not use those? and if there are ice blocks, they have to be matched to defrost the character at the bottom, on top of creating a certain number of matches for them, but it's never clear how many matches will break the ice. there's a slight difference as you keep doing it, but not distinctive enough. other then these clarity issues it's presented very nicely and the music is excellent (the theme for world 3 is my favorite), but despite all the language options and a proper intro, they opted for text-free storytelling via very short animations here and there, and as usual, they shouldn't have bothered, they add absolutely nothing. what they could've bothered with is letting people skip them, along with tutorial animations and the end-of-level celebratory stuff. resolutions and windowed mode via the unity launcher, hints toggle, audio toggles without volume settings and a hypnotic mode slider (whatever that does) make up the settings. the store page says the game is 'calming' and 'tranquil', but without a relaxed mode to remove the move limit it can be really frustrating, difficulty is rollercoastery too instead of a smooth increase, so I stopped bothering with perfecting every level pretty fast. positives aside, with this many questionable design decisions I can only recommend it on sale.
Ruya is a truly meditative experience with a simple, endearing story, and interesting game play. If you're looking to just chill and play a solid, calming game. This is it. People who arn't aware, there is a demo of this game on Newgrounds, so if you're still on the fence, you can play part of it here: https://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/719494
I loved this game. Sure it's a match game, but the atmosphere, the soothing music and color scheme, the focus on meditation to heal was all interesting and a great balance for a game to play while maybe doing something else in the background. I listened to some of the soundtrack and then decided to start playing an audiobook (a common bad habit of mine), and this was a great game for that. So if anyone else likes to multi-task gaming, this is a good one for it. Also, and I can't stress this enough, this is a fabulous game in my mind for anyone with GAD, MDD, or even ADHD or something similar. It's grounding and tension relieving enough that I feel it's great for that. It took me around 12 hours to conquer (with all achievements), but I know I can be a bit pokey. A normal player probably can beat this in more like 9-10, so I feel like 4 dollars is a really good price for that.
*Conditional recommendation* Has limited moves, and if you get stuck anywhere, will block all further progress. Some levels can be quite difficult, so be aware of potential for lots and lots of replay to try to solve, frustrations and possibly terminally stuck. No playthroughs anywhere (and anyway levels don't generate or regenerate identically) and in-game hints only help a little bit. Matching shapes kind of game, no timing pressure, very nice to look at, soothing and pretty, and pleasant music. Backstory makes you feel emotionally invested in trying to solve the levels and give Ruya back her memories and zest for life. So a bit of extra heartache to have to abandon Ruya to her tears in the rain, if getting stuck without being able to complete. This would be much better with an added Skip, or Casual mode. Also, the rules of the game are not entirely clear - like those 'frozen' blocks - how many matches do they take to 'melt', and nothing visually to show how far along in 'melted' you've made them. I didn't understand how it counted points, flowers and unused moves at level completion either. So - it looks nice, sounds nice, is medium-to-difficult - and if you get stuck anywhere, then it's game over. Caveat emptor!
Food for Thought Review
This will be my new segment when I have games where I can’t go into deep analyze but still want to put my 2 cents into it. Not too long, not too short, but just right. A food for thought review won’t have a rating system, but I will say if I would recommend or not. I hope you all enjoy! This game is relaxing, originally is from an android app which I have the feeling it is, the game has a calm atmosphere including the puzzles. The puzzles are somewhat easy but I’m guessing that is the point when you have a meditating game that won’t stress you out. There is a story but very briefly, the main focus is the puzzles which is almost like candy crush. You have to match the picture it shows you and do it within a certain moves. You can place these orbs as many as you want but once you line up then you used up a move. The music is soothing, the worlds you travel looks interesting, in fact I notice within each world it gets darker and in a dilapidated state. Which I’m guessing it reflects the main character’s “struggle.” The only small problem I have with this game is that you can’t switch the orbs you want if the one you have does not work with the line-up the picture shows. Which it gives off a luck-base system and less than a skill-base puzzle game. It gives you many chances to not fail and it increase the challenge in each world but that is the only problem I have for this game. I still recommend it if you like puzzles and have time to spare. The game is basically a match-tree with a nice, relaxing atmosphere and a beautiful design. The difficulty curve increases with the levels, on advanced levels you can't just make random moves or you'll going to lose; they require a bit more of planning and strategy to win. But the game never gets particularly hardcore or frustrating. The story of Ruya is quite simple, but fits well in the minimalistic atmosphere of the game. It is not long, 64 levels in total; the challenge to get the three big flowers in each level (by dropping items until Ruya adds a flower on the next item and then using that item within five moves) add some more playtime (NB: if you get a flower with the finishing move, it doesn't get count... this is something I would change) I liked it. A nice and peaceful diversion, worth its money (less than 4 euros). Recommended for casual gamers, but still enjoyable by abitual gamers (like me)!
so calming. so relaxing.
