This game was quite enjoyable back when I originally purchased it near release, but I felt it had too little content for the price and refunded it. I honestly wish I hadn't. Rule With still worked back then, whatever has happened to it since means it really doesn't. A quick peek on the forum shows this, that the developer's been aware of the issues for a while, and has yet to release a patch. I tried getting back into this about two months ago. The game back then crashed every five minutes, always with some progress loss...but it was still borderline playable at least. Nowadays it tends to error out with rendering issues before reaching the main menu, if it'll even start up in the first place. Of course the problems with invisible backgrounds, characters, and text boxes persists should you make it back into your game. Achievement hunters, although all included used to work fine the "Legendary Fisher" one is partially broken now as stat tracking with it tends to conk out at the 128-fish mark. Having to use SAM for Rule With is highly likely. Avoid this game for now. Should this ever be fixed there is a super pretty, very chill title buried in here. Somewhere.
Rule with an Iron Fish is cheeky fun with its dialogue and zany pirates. I have never understood the entire Fishing genre. It seemed always to me something far more interesting to do in reality then in a game. Then again, there are plenty of games that have come out and been successful to prove me wrong. There must be something there right? You have games where you drive trucks, hunting games and even super realistic fishing games. Today’s subject is Rule with an Iron Fish. I didn’t know anything about this particular title when it landed on my lap but it had a cute name and I knew it involved fishing in some capacity. The only other experience I had to draw on was Cat Goes Fishing, another cheeky game. (One I loved by the way.) One thing that is particularly interesting about Rule with an Iron Fish, is that its release was first on the mobile market, then the PC. – Wait! Come back! Don’t go! I promise its worth it! Yes, Rule with an Iron Fish is a premium mobile game that you can download on your phone. Meaning no ads/micro transactions. The beautiful part is that its the same for PC. Rule with an Iron Fish avoids all the pitfalls of the mobile market, instead delivering something that is easy to digest, easy to play, and best of all, fun. This is a very, very casual and fun game and extremely family friendly. Let’s dive in. The story of Rule with an Iron Fish goes that you and your twin sibling have a kerfuffle. Don’t notice a massive kraken and get separated. Its your quest to find your lost sibling with the help of a myriad of zany pirate themed characters. Along the way, you will do some farming, questing, fishing, combat and more fishing. When I said that Rule with an Iron Fish was a casual game I really meant that. The mechanics of the game are still based on a mobile play style. You only need your mouse/arrow keys to play this entire game. You will click on everything to get things done, meaning no controller support. Starting with fishing; fishing is obviously the main core of the game and how you will earn cash/supplies to buy a multitude of upgrades, hats, pets, ships, and more. To fish you simply click where you want your bobber to go and then wait for a fishy to bite. Simple as that. To keep you involved and prevent this from becoming a snooze fest. Rule with an Iron Fish added rare fish and a struggle system. Some of the more hardier fish will put up a fight and require pressing directional keys to reel in. I am not saying its hard but it’s enough to keep your attention. The real challenge lies in catching all the fish, and completing quests. Quests usually come in the form of, “catch 20 of so and so.” Which is fine, especially because the writing is fantastically absurd.(More on that later) The problem lies in that it’s mostly just a time sink/luck more than anything else. Fish are divided up into group size, large, medium, small etc. Rule with an Iron Fish provides a fish encyclopedia in case as well. So there are some things to alleviate the blind grind. You just have to be patient enough to catch fifty starfish while putting your bobber in the right spots to catch the right size fish. Not a huge problem, but I did get stuck in overall game progression because of one stupid fish, for like an hour. Catching all the rare fish can be a bit of a pain as well. Rule with an Iron Fish offers farming and cooking to help you. There are fish foods that you can use to draw out the rare fish, better bait etc. This is all great and helpful, but I found that a far easier approach was just to keep reloading areas until I saw the yellow flashy bastiges. Not the intended way to play, but farming takes far too long for me. Aside from fishing you have ship combat. Rule with an Iron Fish is about being the best pirate fisherman there was after all. You will face off against other fisherman as they invade your Sea-Turf. The combat is mostly you attempting to cut their lines, catch fish before landing in their boat and battling robots. Did I mention this game was silly? I will be honest, Rule with an Iron Fish isn’t going to be blowing your mind with its gameplay. What I enjoyed about it is that it’s addictive, relaxing, and gives you plenty to do. After a long day at work when you want to just relax, this is the perfect game to play. It’s not stressful at all. I personally put in a good seven hours on this game, I don’t do that for just any game. I played seven hours because it was enjoyable. Simple things can be fun and Rule with an Iron Fish hits the right blend of that. Of course I can’t forget to answer a question most people have. What is the difference between PC and mobile? For the most part, nothing. There is one added area and some items. It’s nice. but you’re mostly paying for the pleasure of playing it on your PC. It helps that this game made me smile and chuckle. I came for the fishing and stayed for the writing. Every time you land one of the scaley buggers, you are usually given a bit of information on that fish. These little snippets were hilarious and genuinely entertaining. This is continued in the overall story and interaction you have with all of the zany pirates you meet in your home base. From pirates who suck at being pirates, to talking llamas, there is always a wink and a nudge going on with Rule with an Iron Fish. Not all of the jokes are going to click with you of course, but the game oozes charm and cheekiness. This is prevalent in the art style of the game as well. While the mobile aesthetic is very in your face this doesn’t take away from the game, I found. The character sprites were cute and unique. From the double peg legged Battista The Bad, to Helga the Valkyrie. They each have their own story, quests, and feelings about your misadventures. Their interaction with each other is also a highlight as you could feel that these characters knew each other. Overall, the art style of the game is simplistic but used effectively. The base itself is full of cute details and doesn’t feel flat or lifeless. The fishing areas do thankfully change up themes from a lava lake to fishing in the sky. However, most of your attention is fixated on shadowy fish rather than anything else. I would’ve liked to seen more detail in some of these areas, but it’s a minor gripe. One area that Rule with an Iron Fish is definitely lacking is on the music. That is to say, there really isn’t much of a soundtrack here at all. I think between the base and certain areas there are two orchestral tracks that repeat. Which is a downright shame as pirate themed music could’ve elevated the art style more. Instead, Rule with an Iron Fish has soothing water noises or stormy background noise. It’s a weird choice and it may have been intended for that relaxation aspect. Like I mentioned before, I dropped seven hours into the game before it was all over. I didn’t catch every single fish so you may have a couple more hours if you are obsessive. From a replay standpoint there isn’t much, as the game is a one and done type of deal. Unless you enjoy starting over and collecting them again. Whatever floats your boat. I do recommend Rule with an Iron Fish. It’s a pleasant experience and the writing shines. There are a lot of ways this game could’ve gone wrong but it managed to steer clear of all the mobile trappings and I am very thankful for that. You don’t usually see that type of thing when it comes to mobile games becoming PC games. From an innovation standpoint obviously, it’s lacking but it trades that in for an easy to play and enjoyable game. I don’t know what the future holds for this developer but I will be keeping an eye out for their future works for sure.
This is a delightful fishing game, reminiscent of Stardew Valley in music and general feeling. It's more grindy than Stardew Valley -- the main thing you do is fish, although there are quests, a garden, and a kitchen island. I'm only three hours in, so this is a very sketchy review. Rule with an Iron Fish is relaxing, pretty, has funny jokes and pretty music, and is a soothing game to play at the end of a long day.
Rule with an Iron Fish - A Pirate Fishing Adventure is a fishing game about pirates. In the opening cutscene your character and their sibling go on the adventure into the sea. Obviously, nothing ever goes according to plan, the kraken appears and crashes their ship to smithereens. Now it is your job to rebuild the ship and save your lost sibling. You start of with a small raft and gradually build up to the bigger ship. The gameplay loop is built around fishing. You swim to different islands to catch rare fish, that you need to complete quests and progress through the story, catching fish also earns you some money, that you can spend on upgrades or cosmetics. Fish catching mechanics are very simple, you just have to throw your line into the water and wait for fish to take a bite. When some fish takes the bait, you have to press a button before it took off with the bait. Sometimes the fish wrangles and you have to press directional buttons that appear on the screen to catch it. Overall this makes for pretty relaxing experience. There are also some other activities in the game, like fish battles, where you have to stop your opponent from catching fish by throwing knives at their line or catching fish mid-air when they use dynamite. After you progress through the story you unlock farming, you can grow different types of crops, which allow you to craft boosters. The only problem with this mechanic is that you have to wait for your crops to grow like in mobile games, though this time is usually around 10 minutes, so you won't have to wait very long. The visual and audio parts of the game are ok. Graphics are stylish, but the animation is lacking. Music is nice, but it repeats too often, which makes it less enjoyable. The levels look small and there's a lot of free space on the sides of the screen. It feels like the levels were designed for vertical screens of modern smartphones, though it's not that big of a deal. Pros: + Relaxing gameplay + Lots of upgrades and cosmetics to collect + Funny dialogue with lots of puns Cons: - A lot of the stuff feels like it was designed primarily for smartphones - Animation is lacking Rule with an Iron Fish is an interesting take on a fishing genre. It is more casual than a regular fishing simulator, though it doesn't loose it's calming effect and also adds some more layers on top of that. Great game to relax after hard day at work.
Rule with an Iron Fish – казуальна риболовля від Kestrel Games
Rule with an Iron Fish

Rule with an Iron Fish.
Rule with an Iron Fish is a RPG game about fishing. A pretty rare game genre but which works very well. You embarked with your twin but a Kraken captured him. Fortunately for you (or not), you're arriving on an island full of pirates which are gonna help you (maybe) to find your twin in exchange for fishes and other things you'll need to catch. You'll then be able to gather components to build ships and access new islands and discover new fish to finally rescue your twin. You'll also be able to buy hats! This game is full of humor and is very relaxing. If you're searching for a game you can play after a long day of work or a long gaming session, this game is definitely meant for you. I personally helped the team to translate the game into the French - so please support them too by trying the game!
Great game! So far, I've gotten nearly eight and a half hours out of this game, over the course of two days. In that time, I completed the main objective of the game and also caught/recorded every fish in the game, but I still haven't done the following: unlock every pet, acquire every in-game trophy, unlock every hat, and finish every side-quest (I imagine that finishing the remaining side quests would unlock the last few pets, trophies, and hats). Point being, this game could certainly keep you occupied for a while, particularly if you're a completionist and/or you love the art style (as I do). Other things I loved: + The world - very simple, but the developers really succeeded in mashing together fishing and piracy in an interesting way. + The fish - they have really cool, quirky designs overall Things that were meh: + The farming system - this is a system where you can grow certain vegetables, which can then be used to create dishes that provide certain buffs. Unfortunately, for me, I found the process of planting to be a little awkward on PC (but maybe it's more intuitive on mobile). Furthermore, I rarely wanted to stop fishing just so I could go plant/harvest vegetables; it never really seemed "worth it" to me. I definitely wish that farming would have been more enjoyable/intuitive, though, because some of the dishes you can make are really useful. + Some late-game side quests - maybe this is just me griping, but I was kind of turned off by some of the later side quests that required certain numbers of rare fish. There are methods/upgrades to increase the likelihood of rare fish appearing, but in my experience, it still took some grinding to catch even 1 or 2 fish of a particular species. Some may say this should be expected for what is essentially endgame material, but for me, extensive grnding isn't really something I want/expect in more of a casual game like this. Things I disliked: +Fishing in the Deep - this is an area with an awesome design, but I found it difficult at times to pick out the shadows of fish from the darker background. Maybe this was just me/an issue with my brightness settings, but it still made this level probably my least favorite to play.
This is really fun, filled with awful jokes (awful as in good :) ) such as when you get an "Amberjack" and the information about it reads: "He's an Amberjack and he's okay." The gameplay is quite basic, you click the water (and depth) and that's where the hook lands, then (when a fish is about to go for the hook) dual circles apper, the inner is marked by a circular line and as soon as the outer circle goes inside that line the colour will turn green and that's the time to click to catch the fish. (the colour is red'ish before it goes green) Depending on how rare the fish is you may also have to do a bit of a QTE as well, it is very basic and an arrow on the sreen shows up/down/left/right, so far I haven't encountered more than three directions in succession and that's only happened with for instance the mermaid and the rare fish. (the first time you encounter it it'll be one direction) These keys can't be rebound and it's either WASD or the arrow keys, as it's not about movement it is of lesser problems than in a game where it revolves around that as it seems to give you a fair amount of time as well, I haven't timed out once yet, every failure I've had with the QTE's have been me screwing it up. (as it does sort of stress you knowing you have to press the right key you're bound to do it quite fast...so I do not know how much time you really have...) There will also be some "battles" in the game, they consist of you clicking the enemis fishing line to cut it, to use the net to catch the fish they caught while it's in the air and also click some mini-subs before they hit you....adding onto that there may also appear bits'n'bobs (literally) and other things you need to build better ships, in the water....that bit is the least calm one as you have to move the mouse to click at targets here and there. I do not regret buying this at all, disregarding the few stressfull things the music's nice and calming, the gameplay is quite simple and relaxing and there's a lot of different fish to catch, hats to buy, stories to hear and so on, it's *really* nice IMHO.
