Laurie's pod is shot down and collides with "Colony 102", rumored to harbor a secret weapon that can destroy the aliens.
Now the fate of humanity rests in her cold, metal hands...

ROLLING STAR by NUL2 STUDIO is a vibrant indie action-platformer that embraces the foundations of the Metroidvania genre while layering in humor, sci-fi spectacle, and a satisfying sense of mechanical growth. At first glance, it presents itself with charming pixel art and an energetic tone, but beneath that approachable surface lies a carefully structured adventure built around progression, customization, and tightly tuned combat. The game follows Laurie, a mechanically inclined young woman whose quiet orbital life is disrupted by a sudden alien assault. What begins as a scramble for survival quickly transforms into a larger journey across Colony 102, a sprawling space settlement hiding secrets powerful enough to alter the fate of humanity. The narrative strikes a compelling balance between lighthearted humor and high-stakes sci-fi drama. Laurie is not portrayed as a flawless hero, but rather as a capable yet relatable protagonist forced into extraordinary circumstances. Her dialogue is witty and grounded, often injecting levity into tense situations without undermining the seriousness of the threat. The worldbuilding unfolds gradually through exploration and character interactions, allowing players to piece together the history of Colony 102 and the broader interstellar conflict. This measured storytelling approach ensures that exposition never overwhelms gameplay, instead complementing it in a way that strengthens immersion. Exploration is one of ROLLING STAR’s strongest pillars. True to Metroidvania design, the map is interconnected and layered, with pathways looping back on themselves and previously inaccessible areas unlocking as new abilities are acquired. Early sections establish a deliberate pace, introducing movement mechanics and combat fundamentals before expanding into more complex traversal challenges. As Laurie gains enhanced mobility tools and specialized equipment, returning to earlier regions reveals hidden routes, optional upgrades, and cleverly concealed secrets. This steady empowerment reinforces a satisfying feedback loop: each new skill does not simply add combat efficiency but recontextualizes the world itself. Combat blends responsiveness with strategic customization. Basic encounters are brisk and engaging, requiring attention to enemy patterns and positioning rather than simple button-mashing. As players gather materials from defeated foes, they can craft and upgrade gear tailored to their preferred playstyle. This system allows for experimentation, whether focusing on raw offensive output, defensive resilience, or utility-based enhancements. The flexibility encourages players to fine-tune their approach, and the impact of these choices becomes especially apparent during the game’s larger boss encounters. These battles are visually striking and mechanically layered, often demanding mastery of movement and equipment synergy to overcome. A particularly distinctive aspect of ROLLING STAR is its transition into zero-gravity combat scenarios. Once Laurie acquires access to space traversal, the gameplay subtly shifts to accommodate the physics of open space. Movement becomes more fluid and momentum-driven, altering how fights unfold and forcing players to adapt to new spatial dynamics. This evolution prevents stagnation, injecting freshness into the mid-to-late stages of the adventure and reinforcing the game’s sci-fi identity. The contrast between confined colony corridors and expansive orbital arenas gives the experience a dynamic rhythm. Visually, the game embraces detailed pixel art that feels lively rather than retro for its own sake. Environments are colorful and distinct, ranging from industrial interiors to desolate outer-space vistas. Character animations are expressive, conveying personality through subtle gestures and exaggerated reactions during both dialogue and combat. Boss designs in particular showcase creativity, filling the screen with imposing figures that feel appropriately grand within the pixel aesthetic. Complementing the visuals is a soundtrack that energizes action sequences while maintaining atmospheric tones during exploration, ensuring that pacing remains balanced throughout. While ROLLING STAR excels in its core systems, it is not without minor limitations. Some players may wish for even deeper combat variation or additional late-game abilities to further expand tactical options. However, these desires stem more from enthusiasm for the game’s foundation than from structural shortcomings. The overall experience feels cohesive and polished, with mechanics and narrative elements reinforcing one another rather than competing for attention. Ultimately, ROLLING STAR stands out as a confident indie project that understands both its inspirations and its own strengths. It delivers a complete adventure filled with exploration, customization, and personality without overstaying its welcome. By blending engaging combat, meaningful progression, and a charming protagonist, NUL2 STUDIO has crafted a sci-fi journey that feels vibrant and thoughtfully constructed. For fans of Metroidvania experiences who appreciate character-driven storytelling and evolving mechanics, ROLLING STAR offers a rewarding expedition across a universe brimming with danger, humor, and discovery. Rating: 8/10
The game is fun and worth its price on first playthrough. Newgame+ also known as hard mode is really impressive. Hard mode lets player continue with all unlocked skills and new enemies difficulty continues perfectly from normal mode's end game. During normal game player will unlock maybe half of the skills and even less of the items. This means that main character and gameplay keeps evolving in hard mode instead of just increasing stats. After multiple hours chaining boosts, staying air long periods of time and moving very fast becomes a skill that the player has learned. Dashing through areas after 10 hours of practice feels very satisfying.
