Add late game content and it will be grand. There is nothing to do after your band gets to 4 stars or above which doesnt take long.
This concept was a great idea. Graphics were poor but to be honest that doesnt even bother me ...There was just NOTHING to do...I would have to skip whole weeks for the band to rest to be ready to plan a show or an album and I wasn't able to scout multiple bands (might be an option if you train scouting more but not worth the time)... Was truly a let down... I would give it another try if they fixed band fatigue and allowed you to have multiple bands early... Otherwise its just too SLOW BURN
Rock Star Manager is a Management game where you can hire bands to perform shows and create albums with the music that those bands can create. The objective is winning the Best Album of the Year and of course is making money. You can hire new bands or you can fire band members to get new ones. Its a good game to pass time. Despite a very interesting concept, this is simply a terrible game. You take the role as a Record Label(At least, I think you do. You're not given the option to name it or many of the functions associated with being a record label, but you do manage bands. Kind of.) The problem is, nothing really seems to work as you might expect it to. When you start a new game, you're instructed to "Scout" for a new band to sign. Then you're forced to wait a number of weeks for the scouting results to come in. You're presented with 3 band options, each with 4 members. Each member of each band has a skill rating ranging from 0-100 and a future potential rating using the same scale. Naturally, you'd like to compare the stats of one band versus another. You can, but in the most aggravating way possible. To see a band member's stats, you have to flip their display picture over. But you can only flip over the display pictures of one band at a time. So instead of being able to conveniently shift your eyes from one band to another, you have to repeatedly flip one band's pictures over, hope you memorize their stats and then do the same to the 2nd band. Lather, rinse, repeat. Quality of life is for losers, apparently. Whatever, you pick a band and you sign it to your label. They start out costing you $0 per month, somehow. So now what? Each band will have 2 songs already written and you can choose to have your band "Plan Album", "Plan Show" or train their skills. Every action costs a minimum of 70 energy(your energy is capped at 100.) Playing shows increases your bands reputation and fan-count, but also immediately causes your band to cost more per month. Planning an album can be used to compile already written songs(that part is important) and make some steady income, but there is NO WAY TO MAKE YOUR BAND WRITE SONGS. Seriously, I played this game for ~20 in-game years and the 2 bands I managed wrote a total of 6 songs via random events. And even when you do manage to release a 1 song "album"(with that snail's pace of songwriting, that's all you'll ever manage), the game doesn't track past performances at all. There's no monthly charts. No competing bands in the world. Nothing you'd expect from a management game. So I got bored of sending my band to random gigs around the world and noticed I could try to recruit individual band members to replace the mediocre drummer. I found a new drummer with a 70-90 potential. When I went to hire him, I had $294k in the bank, it said it would cost $3500 to hire the drummer and $4700 to fire the old drummer, but the "Confirm Change" button was grayed out. No explanation was given. Competent games would suggest that band morale or chemistry wouldn't allow it, but those traits don't exist in this game. So I'm forced to "Reject Candidate" on the obvious upgrade and move on. And I moved on by uninstalling the game. The mechanics are broken. The gameplay loop is nonexistent. The user interface is awful. Even for $2, this isn't a game worth your time.
Good concept but there just....isn't that much there, and it progresses too fast yet also way too slowly at the same time. I had the same band for 5 years and they only made 5 songs, but I could have a gig in Australia for tens of thousands of people. And there are MONTHS where you do nothing but press E (next week). You can't even practice during the down time because it can take 2-5 weeks to recover the energy. You also can't have 2 bands practice in the same week - I didn't try but I assume this is the same for gigs and album releases. When you initially sign a band, it shows you a skill bracket that they can max out at (up to 99 I think), but that disappears once you've signed them. So if you want to replace a band member, you can't compare them unless you can remember the skill bracket (which once you have more than one band, is really difficult). I also couldn't find any way to replace a front man and I had issues with a few of them. And there isn't a tour function, just singular gigs (or at least it didn't come up for me). I also found it weirdly hard to find the information I was looking for because of the UI set up and how loud most of the graphics and fonts are. Like, you can only view member info by clicking to flip their "info cards", so you have to click each member before practice to see how much they increased their quality. Same for the signing of bands, you can't compare all members of each band against each other, just see one band's members at a time. So yeah. I just wish there was more to it. If you want a game you can complete in a couple of hours max, this is it. Don't expect much more unfortunately. I'll happily update this review if/when more content is added.
