About
In River Towns, you place differently shaped buildings and make them fit into a limited area. Combine unique districts into a vibrant living city and help restore our River Towns.
Each of the three districts has its own set of shapes which are shuffled randomly. This makes every game you play a new and unique puzzle to solve. The different district's unique and vibrant architecture combines into beautiful little towns along the river. As the town grows, more townspeople move in and bring life back into this old and broken world.
Buildings also belong to differently colored districts which score bonus points when connected into large clusters. Getting a good score on each level awards stars, which restores the world and also unlocks more levels.
The beginning of each town starts with you restoring this part of the dried up river and surrounding it with buildings. Throughout the game you encounter other objectives, such as gold to collect, trees to regrow and old monuments to rebuild. This turns the difficulty and possibility of collecting points completely upside down.
With every city you piece together, the world becomes a little more verdant. When you complete a level, you will receive a gold, silver or bronze marker, depending on your score. Once you have enough points, you can move on to the next world.

This looked like it could be really fun. But it isn't. It's actually so barebones simple and uninteresting that I'm impressed they worked so hard to make it pretty. The game looks great. It really does. It seems like it should be this fun, puzzle city builder. But that's not at all what this is. All you do is place shapes and match colors. That's it. Literally... you place a shape, try to match the colors, and then move on to the next shape. That's all folks. Did you match well enough? Congrats, you can unlock the next "map" which may have a river in a slightly different spot. I found this thoroughly disappointing and boring. Do not recommend in the least.
Tetris style "fit pieces into place" type of game. Very mobile-esque in terms of levels. Graphics are cute. There were too many bugs and crashes. Audio cut out about a minute into playing the game. I got it on discount for $8. I would not recommend it.
It's Tetris. I didn't realize that when i bought it. i am over Tetris.
It's a really interesting concept that doesn't quite work. Placing tiles on a very particular board and getting bonuses for things like color matching, surrounding certain parts of the map, covering certain parts of the map with the tiles etc sounds good on paper. In practice, getting a random mix of tiles at random times makes placement frustrating, while the lack of a tetris-style timer makes the pace lack urgency. Weird combination of boring and frustrating. I wouldn't recommend it.
My brain likes this game, so it's a 10!
You know all those games where they say: “Oh, it's so relaxing”? And then it's just boring. Not here! The game is chill but also challenging. Who would be happy with just two out of three stars for the levels? Love it!
River Towns is a thoughtful and quietly inventive strategy experience developed by Frogsong Studios and published by Metaroot in collaboration with Stray Fawn Publishing. Rather than presenting itself as a traditional city builder with complex economies or micromanagement systems, the game reimagines urban planning as a spatial puzzle, where every building placement is a deliberate decision shaped by limited space, shifting objectives, and the natural flow of rivers that divide the land. The result is a game that feels simultaneously cozy and mentally engaging, inviting players to slow down and think carefully about how small choices ripple outward into larger, more satisfying patterns. At the heart of River Towns lies a tile-placement system that transforms town construction into an exercise in spatial reasoning. Each building arrives as a uniquely shaped piece belonging to a specific district type, and players must rotate and position these shapes onto a grid constrained by rivers, terrain, and existing structures. Success is determined not by raw expansion, but by how effectively similar districts are clustered together, how cleverly bridges are used to connect separated areas, and how well limited space is utilized without creating awkward gaps. This creates a constant push and pull between short-term optimization and long-term planning, as a single poorly placed tile can complicate future turns in subtle but meaningful ways. What elevates the experience beyond simple shape matching is the way objectives layer additional strategic considerations onto each level. Beyond forming large district clusters, players are often asked to restore dried riverbeds, collect scattered resources, or revive natural features such as trees. These goals encourage flexible thinking, as pursuing one objective too aggressively can undermine another. Each level feels like a compact puzzle box with multiple solutions, rewarding experimentation and replay rather than funneling players toward a single optimal approach. The gradual introduction of new mechanics and constraints ensures that the challenge evolves steadily, keeping the experience engaging without becoming overwhelming. The game’s presentation reinforces its calming yet purposeful tone. Visually, River Towns adopts a clean, stylized look that prioritizes clarity while still conveying warmth and charm. Towns slowly come to life as buildings are placed, with subtle animations suggesting activity and growth without cluttering the screen. The river itself acts as both a visual anchor and a mechanical obstacle, shaping the identity of each map and reinforcing the theme of communities adapting to their environment rather than dominating it. Accompanying audio elements and music maintain a relaxed atmosphere, supporting thoughtful play sessions where concentration and creativity take precedence over speed or reflexes. Replayability is a key strength, driven not only by score chasing but by the variety inherent in tile draws, objectives, and map layouts. No two sessions unfold in exactly the same way, even when revisiting familiar levels. Additional modes such as daily challenges introduce fresh constraints that test optimization skills, while leaderboards provide light competitive motivation without undermining the game’s largely meditative nature. For more creatively inclined players, the inclusion of level creation tools and community sharing options significantly extends the game’s lifespan, turning River Towns into both a puzzle playground and a collaborative design space. While the experience is largely smooth and satisfying, there are moments where its minimalist approach can feel slightly restrictive. Players accustomed to robust city simulation systems may initially wish for deeper progression or more persistent consequences across levels. Some interface elements and quality-of-life features could also benefit from refinement, particularly for players new to tile-based puzzle games. However, these limitations are more reflective of the game’s focused design philosophy than of any fundamental shortcomings. Ultimately, River Towns succeeds by understanding exactly what it wants to be and executing that vision with care. It offers a refreshing alternative to both traditional city builders and abstract puzzle games, blending the pleasures of thoughtful planning with the joy of watching a small world gradually take shape. For players who enjoy spatial puzzles, gentle strategy, and games that reward patience and foresight, River Towns delivers a deeply satisfying experience that feels both relaxing and intellectually rewarding. Rating: 8/10
Fun and relaxing puzzle game. Got all achievements in only a few hours.
Simple but challenging puzzle game. I've had so much fun!
