The Monkey King, a divine being and the foremost disciple of Tripitaka.
Born from stone as a stone monkey, he mastered divine arts and rampaged across the land.
Later welcomed into the Heaven.
He turned the entire Heaven against him in a great uproar before being captured.
Sealed within a mountain by the Buddha, he spent 500 years in confinement.
A skilled and passionate warrior, though his hot temper often leads to trouble.
The pig demon, the second disciple of Tripitaka.
Originally from the Heaven, he was banished to Earth after playing a prank on Chang'e.
During his fall, he was mistakenly reborn as a pig and lived as a demon.
He's a cheerful, easygoing fellow, though he hasn't entirely shed his greed.
The third disciple of Sanzo, a demon.
Originally from the Heaven, he shattered a sacred vessel and was banished to live on Earth as a demon.
He's earnest, but tends to fade into the background as his two more prominent senior disciples steal the spotlight.

The combat feels like an all-you-can-eat buffet of chaos. Buttons are being mashed, people are getting launched across the screen, and somehow I’m still pretending I have a strategy. Every fight ends looking like a shopping cart crashed into a fireworks factory, and honestly? That’s beautiful. And the best part? The game KNOWS exactly what it is. It’s goofy, loud, over-the-top, and proud of it. It doesn’t care about realism. It cares about whether you can uppercut a dude into next Tuesday while your friends scream-laugh beside you. Absolute joy. 10/10 would accidentally start another street fight while trying to buy dumplings.

This is a decent game that unfortunately makes too many bad decisions to compete with other action roguelites at the same or lower price point. I cleared the game once, and thought it was average at best. The moment to moment gameplay is fun, but there's not a lot of depth. The build and keepsake mechanics are directly ripped from Hades, so if you're tired of that formula, unfortunately this is more of the same. The new animations for the Kunio sprites are nice and still have as much personality as they did four decades ago. One of the things the game suffers from is sticking to the tired Hades formula too much. There's actually a nice collection of moves (even if many of the animations are ripped from the previous two Kunio games), but you can only equip one at a time. While this is not a combo game in any way, it sucks to have to remove your unique attack just to get another special. Many of the mid-run ones are worse than the default one, so I'm not sure why they didn't remap the mid-run moves to another button. The keepsakes (talismans) are a lot less interesting than their inspiration and mostly can be described as stat sticks or RNG mitigation. Runs are a bit long at around an hour, which is worsened by the fact that the builds are even more rigid than Hades (one property per button). This means that your build doesn't really get crazy or interesting enough to warrant the game's long runtime. With a bit more freedom on build diversity and a shorter run length, I'd play this longer, but as it is now it's only fun every once in a while. In terms of the overall run experience, the game suffers from questionable pacing with each room respawning enemies several times, more often than not ranged enemies spamming from outside the FOV behind traps. This means that attrition damage is really dangerous and annoying, and towards the end of the run this becomes far more frequent. Ironically the bosses are better designed than the mob fights, with consistent patterns and damage windows. Mobs respawning less and reducing how many traps spawn would go a long way towards making this game faster and less frustrating. It feels like the game is trying to pad out its small amount of content with poor design decisions like this, but these decisions also make the game not something you'd boot up over better choices in the genre for similar or lower price points. Postgame content is nonexistent, with only more metaprogression to unlock. Given how annoying the game can be to clear even on the first time, this might be for the best. Overall the game isn't bad, but there's no real reason to buy this frame 1 if you haven't already fully harvested better action roguelikes around this price point. The game itself also lacks a lot of QOL which helps longer roguelikes feel worth playing, such as in-run saves, borderless fullscreen and graphics options. While the game is affordable, missing these things is laughable when smaller games that exist without an ancient IP have them along with other good features too. The poor performance on the lead platform (Switch) can't be ignored and is honestly unacceptable. I assume they made this in UE5 to speed up dev time, but it clearly wasn't worth it. A game that passes for a Dreamcast game should not be pushing the Steam Deck as hard as a AAA game, haha.
Kunio-kun game in name only. It's cool Arc tried a new genre for the series as Kunio's no stranger to doing that, but the end result was a generic and mindless roguelike stripped away of what makes Kunio click. Double Dragon Gaiden did a much better job of making a roguelike that felt fresh for the series while still keeping it's Double Dragon roots in-tact. Didn't help that this game is the 3rd time in a row we've gotten an ancient China theme. I thought Three Kingdoms was a cool novelty, then it's sequel came out 3 years later which I thought was lazy but still fun, and now we're here with yet another one. Would've liked this more as a bonus gamemode in Three Kingdoms Next or better yet even as a straight up modern revival of Technos' China Gate.
Out of pure nostalgia, I really wanted to play River City Saga: Journey to the West. I launched it with a mix of excitement and apprehension. In fact, I ended up putting James Bond aside, I didn't even finish it,because Nekketsu showed up, brother. I say excitement because it was another game set in a world I've loved since childhood. I say apprehension because time is merciless, and over the years many legendary franchises have returned only to prove that nostalgia alone can't carry a game. Some tried to reinvent themselves so aggressively that they forgot what made them special in the first place. Others remained stuck in the past and ended up feeling like relics. River City Saga: Journey to the West, however, pulls off something far more difficult: it feels old in all the right ways and new exactly where it needs to be. The premise is already absurd enough to work perfectly. The classic Chinese novel Journey to the West is reimagined through the Nekketsu lens, and the result is exactly the kind of madness fans of the series expect. Sun Wukong is Kunio. Zhu Bajie is Kunio. Sha Wujing is Kunio. Basically, it feels as if someone took one of the most important works of Asian literature and decided it would be much more entertaining if the entire cast settled every conflict with punches to the head and flying fists. And the funniest part is that it works brilliantly in practice.
Mechanics and progression are just like in the game Hades but, instead of greek mythology, it's Journey to the West played by Kunio-kun characters in a funny way. Fun little game if you enjoy beating enemies up over and over. And if you're a Kunio fan it is a no brainer.
