River City Girls

Has some clear strengths, but mostly left me confused as to why it got such a good reputation. Features a lot of strong individual animations in the sprite art, especially for the main characters, but enemy animations got weaker and weaker as the game wore on. The sound mixing is also surprisingly weak, combining with some of the animation gaps to create an impression that is shockingly cheap for a game I heard described as a pixel-animation darling. Beat-em-up mechanics are adequate, but feature a lot of irritating holes - poor crowd control options, minimal options for comboing airborne enemies, next to no interactions with knocked-down enemies. Ultimately failed to hold my interest.

[h2]Fun Beat’em Up with a retro look and a really great soundtrack[/h2] The true final boss and ending are hidden behind somewhat obscure secrets, but overall the pacing, gameplay and design are great. The game is missing a few QoL features that can be found in the sequel (especially an indicator of which foods have already been collected) and there are one or two difficulty spikes, but other than that, it’s great fun. The soundtrack will get stuck in your head (the song"Rich" just slaps) and the silly humor works, as the game never takes itself too serious. Especially fantastic in co-op with a friend!
