I enjoyed Risk of Rain 1, but I couldn't say it is a good game; its enjoyment is reserved for those who understand its mechanics, spend the time to internalize them, and soak in the world. Risk of Rain 2 is an improvement in every way: graphically, gameplay-wise, cast of characters, and depth. It is a true sequel in its own right. It is a sequel done properly. However... Each expansion pack released for this game has, in my opinion, made the game significantly worse than before. This is exacerbated by the original development team having stopped development after the first expansion; it is a fact of game development that there will be friction when a new team takes on an existing game. In my opinion, the real crime was that this new team was allowed to release a paid DLC that damaged what was left of the original game + expansion pack, rather than a few patches or run some free beta content first. I'm not angry at the difficulty, or leaning into a lack of balance per se, but the expansions added tedium, as well as broken and unpredictable difficulty spikes in the expansion levels and items. This game punishes you for exploring with death, over and over again. If you're into that, you'll like this game. If you don't, just play something else. Risk of Rain 2 suffers from a deliberate lack of balance; this is partly where its strength lies, but also where it divides the player base. The random spawns, loot, and level paths on each playthrough make the game near-infinitely variable, and on the lowest difficulty setting, things aren't so bad for less-hardcore players. On harder difficulties, this is where the "lack" of balance really shines; it is both a strength and a glaring weakness for this game's accessibility. While I don't care for the strange, unhinged and bizarre lore, I know some people do ... and if you do, there's a lot of it. It's a completely unsubstantial and dark fever dream, but it's there if you want it. But here is where I indict the game into the deepest regions of contempt: > This is the kind of game that enables your worst friends to live out their worst behaviours. You know that friend, right? The one that lives in an eternal power fantasy and has a lack of true empathy for others? In Risk of Rain 2, there's nothing to stop you from steamrolling through the level ahead of your party, opening every high-level chest, swiping the only red item spawned from a boss, level after level, and only offering the good items to your party once you're already so obscenely overpowered that you've snowballed yourself into a nigh-invulnerable bender of reality itself. Sure, it can be fun to do that, but having to listen to partymates complain across multiple game session about how that one person is coasting along with 2-3x the items of everyone else, watching the rest of the party die over and over again, because the strongest character is picking the infinite loops or unilaterally triggering the toughest challenges just so they can get more loot... is really depressing, makes the game immensely frustrating, and forces me to question what friendship really is. The game IS better with friends, but make sure they possess basic human decency before you play this game with them.

Best in the genre. Gameplay, sound design, music, lore, style, it has it all. ...and the music is electric.
And his music was electric...
Still figuring out if it'll rain.
Other than the platforming and shooting you have very little agency. This game could use tooltips to explain what I am picking up or interacting with.
