RoR2 is one of those games you can buy any time you want. It has co-op, but you don't need it to play, it's just as good SP. The graphics have a timeless cel-shaded look, so it's never going to look dated. This one's all about the gameplay. And as a roguelike/lite, you don't need to have a lot of time available to sink into it all in one go. If you buy it, you will likely put a ton of time into it, but each session doesn't have to last that long (maybe an hour once you get decent at at). Why should you buy it? Well, it's my personal favorite roguelike, just barely edging out Binding of Isaac due to its more interesting cast of characters. And, like BoI, it's a game that appears on the surface to be a demanding bullet-hell that requires twitch skills, but after playing it for a while, that turns out to be mis-judging the book by its cover. It's actually more of a thinking game. Learning how the game's mechanics work leads to a mind-over-matter situation where you're able to put your knowledge into practice and turn what seems to be very difficult at first into something surprisingly easy -- as long as you make good strategic choices. Also, don't be scared that the game's difficulty ramps up over time, because learning to make good exploration and item choices means that your character grows in power faster than the enemies, and the clock becomes meaningless. It's not there to make the game punishing, it's there to require you to learn the game's mechanics. And once you do, it will feel like that scene in the Matrix where Neo suddenly realizes what he's capable of.
Hello there, aspiring Risk of Rain gamer. I see you scrolling through the negative reviews, trying to talk yourself out of getting the game. Hang on, hang on, don’t leave! Despite what you may think, I’m not here to sway you into spending your hard earned money on this game, quite the opposite in fact. See this review exists not because I particularly dislike the game, but because I feel that a negative review is a better outlet for my criticism. I know full well that this game is not for everyone. And perhaps, through my bellyaching, you might realize that the game isn’t really to your liking. Putting it simply, I’m here to play devil’s advocate. ADDITIONALLY, this is my opinion. I strongly implore anyone to come and yell at me about anything in this review they disagree with, or if they just think the review sucks in general. That way, those passing through can get broader and more varied input on the game.
THE MULTIPLAYER:
Now, the multiplayer might seem an odd place for a review to start, but I know there’s like a 60% chance you’re here because your unemployed friend is begging you to get the game and play it with them. So, might as well cover it first. If you’re not interested in playing with others, go ahead and skip to the next section. Your enjoyment with the multiplayer experience comes down entirely to who you play it with. See, as a roguelike, RoR2 is about collecting a bunch of items and growing stupidly, ridiculously powerful. The problem is that the game does absolutely nothing to balance out item distribution between players. When an item drops, only one person can pick it up. As such, the only way to prevent a massive power imbalance is to play with people who know how to both share and communicate, which can be a big ask in this day and age.
THE RUNS:
I find the flow of any given run in Risk of Rain 2 fun, or maybe ‘satisfying’ is the better word, but also kind of uninteresting. Despite the name of the game, I feel that there are a relatively small number of speedbumps or ‘risks’ you’ll actually encounter. For example, the layout of each stage has almost no randomization outside of the placement of chests and interactables. And, listen. Listen. Predictable runs are all well and good, that sort of consistency makes getting into the flow of the gameplay loop far easier. But I’m not here to ‘get into the flow.’ I don’t play roguelikes because I want to feel ‘in control.’ I am the methhead gambling addict tweaking in front of the slot machine, chasing the ‘godrun’ dragon. If I already know how things are gonna go down, it removes a lot of the fun. Sure, I might get a really strong item or item combo early on and get an early godrun, but the game lacks that depth--that grit that makes roguelikes so appealing to me. There are a few mechanics that provide some risk, don’t get me wrong, but for a game with ‘Risk’ in the name you’d really expect there to be more. It seems the developers intended for risk to be a bit more prevalent. Unfortunately, some of their efforts were unsuccessful. What this all means is that the gameplan for any given run is going to be mostly similar without too much variation.
THE GIMMICK:
Risk of Rain 2 is largely defined by its gimmick: “difficulty increases with time.” The longer your run, the harder it will be, or so the game says. This is meant to encourage meaningful decision-making. Do you stick around a stage longer to get more loot and pray the items you get outweigh the difficulty? Do you speedrun through all the stages to keep the difficulty low but deprive yourself of power? Some mix of both? It’s a great idea. It’s also poorly executed. The way difficulty scaling works, it’s almost always better to loot most of a stage than to speed through it. This is due to how ridiculously powerful items become, and how difficulty scaling works when moving from one stage to the next. There is some nuance to this, of course, but not much.
THE CHARACTERS:
I have… issues with this game’s playable characters, referred to as ‘survivors.’ That said, I’m also extremely picky when it comes to ability design in games, so take this section with a grain of salt. To put it bluntly, I find most of the survivors boring as hell, yet somehow satisfying to play? See, the vast majority of survivors have very straightforward abilities that lack depth. Some survivors have unique exploits or ‘tech,’ but these aren’t broad enough to evoke truly creative gameplay. Additionally, while the survivors do play differently, not many have interesting or meaningful gimmicks to engage with. In my eyes, a good character should have at least one ability with multiple applications, should recontextualize at least one mechanic or system of the game, should be able to interact with the world/environment in some way, and should have some limitation or situation in which they shouldn’t do something. Most survivors almost do these, but all of their gimmicks and abilities end up being static and without depth. That said, I did mention that the survivors are still satisfying to play. And this is true. Even if the characters are simple, Risk of Rain 2 has absolutely phenomenal sound and visual design. The moves are punchy and good-looking (most of the time. Looking at you, Seekers of the Storm.) There’s nothing quite like landing a kill with The Bandit’s desperado, or exploding a cluster of enemies with The Artificer’s nano-bomb.
THE ITEMS:
Like most roguelikes, a run in Risk of Rain 2 is almost entirely defined by the items you collect. It’s important to note, though, that almost all items are entirely passive. Personally, I find this a little disappointing. I also know a lot of the fun of roguelikes for some people is picking up random weapons and being forced to make do with them, so this might be a turn-off for some people. The items themselves are fun in the same way the characters are, straightforward and lacking depth but they sound and feel amazing.
THE MUSIC:
Dude this is unironically one of the best soundtracks in video game history. Chris Christodoulou (the composer) is a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ music wizard. If you don’t end up buying the game, I STRONGLY IMPLORE YOU to go listen to “The Rain Formerly Known as Purple,” “They Might As Well Be Dead,” or “Con Lentitud Poderosa.”
THE CONTENT TO COME:
It should be noted that the original developers are no longer working on this game. A few years back they sold it to Gearbox, and were hired by Valve where they now work on Deadlock, if I recall correctly. As a result, all new content comes in the form of 15$ DLC. It tends to feel unpolished, like it belongs in a fanmade modpack. Still, its nice to continue receiving content at all, and one of the Gearbox DLC is quite good.
CONCLUSION:
I adore Risk of Rain 2 and the game means a lot to me. The game is fun, and I have as many hours as I do for good reason. It's so easy to just boot it up and launch myself straight into a run. There’s a very tangible feeling of progression in a run and collecting items is just so satisfying. But… I think that overall, it is a fairly shallow experience carried by fantastic music and amazing visual and audio design. Risk of Rain 2 doesn’t give me what I want out of a roguelike, and thus I don’t really play it as one. I play RoR2 when I want to turn my brain off or hang out with friends. It is, to put it simply, dumb fun. And, there’s nothing wrong with that. But if you’re looking for a demanding and layered roguelike experience, this game probably isn’t for you.
TLDR:
The game is good dumb fun carried by its visuals, audio, and music. It lacks depth in many areas, and is a game you sort of turn your brain off to, even on the harder difficulties.
Game continually gets new updates and new content + no paid cosmetics or microtransactions, and some people still find a way to complain. 10/10 game.

Life has been hitting extra hard these past few months, and I've been quite sad a lot of the time. I picked gaming back up since I already had a good computer, and after playing some different games, and seeing this game recommended to me constantly, I finally decided to give it a try. And wow, I was not expecting to be completely taken to the world of Petrichor V like I have been these past few weeks. Between the gameplay that has scratched every itch I have in my brain, and the beautiful, tragic lore, this game is amazing. Even in the midst of this depression, and as much as it sucks sometimes, I have been looking forward so much to doing runs, unlocking stuff, playing content I still have yet to, getting better and exploring the seemingly limitless ways to play this game. This game has just been genuinely fun and interesting, and its helped me so much.
I've only played pirated games for around 5 years and this is the first game i bought on steam. I only played it for 1h but i liked it. i'm still figuring how to play the game but i like the rythm and the music in it, i'll recommend it to another pirate.
I really wanted to like this game. When all was said and done, I didn't dislike it, per se. I just didn't want to keep playing it. Is it challenging? Yeah, can be, checks that box. Does it have good music? Overall, absolutely. Graphics? Good cel style graphics. Pacing? Good. If you were to ask me about any particular thing in the game, I'd have no complaints. For me though, there was just a point in the first hour where I thought "is this it?" I usually like this style, this one just didn't click for me. Hopefully it will click for you, but I can't recommend it.
Fun to play, easy to get the hang of this run and gun shooter. lots of items to collect on your runs that always keep things interesting!
