I found this game on Kickstarter, it's improved so much since the alpha playtest! Charming graphics and it reminds me of the old Playstation jrpg games! It seems to still be early in development but I can't wait to see where this goes :D
First off this game is not my usual gig. I am not a usual rpg'er, BUT this brings back mega nostalgia vibes. One of the first games I had ever played was a browser game that I don't remember the name of but it was basically hero quest or something similar. This brings me back to the first days of my internet experience and the awesomeness that brought me into turn-based tactics. This is a game that speaks to that nostalgia. The combat is more old-school but makes you feel that sensation again. The story is great as well. Angels, Daemons, Nephalim, it is all great, interesting, and engaging. AND the price point is fantastic in today's world of 70-dollar games where the devs don't even interact with their community. The devs of this game show their care and love for that they are making. The amount of hours and resources that have been poured into this game for a studio that has 4-5 people shows. I honestly cannot wait to see what will happen next and I am 100% positive that if they receive the love they deserve, they will soar to the top without a problem. I would say get the game, listen to the story, enjoy the nostalgia, and most of all remember what games were originally about.
Intro text crawl made me think of kingdom hearts and that is just unacceptable (LoL). Voiced narration is a phenomenal touch that I did not expect from a small team, fantastic. The lighting is absolutely gorgeous, Audibly said "oh wow". Pixel work is beautiful and coupled with the animation provides an excellent presentation. The still character portraits are full of personality, telling a story about the character without a word being said. With that said though Atlas seems... Different. The supporting characters portrait feels so much more fully cooked, more life in them. Atlas feels more plain white bread. Which is interesting as that feeling immediately dissipates when seeing Atlas in game as a model. Magnificent backbone for a turn based rpg, clear concise menu, easy to read and understand, enjoyable combat, all the necessary building blocks. Cannot wait for game to come out of early access but as it stands now it is an absolute delight to play and a fantastic addition to the tried and true turn based rpg we all grew up with and loved. Keep up the great work team!
A review copy was provided by the developer.
🔶 Rising Spire is a turn based RPG, set on a natural fantasy world, defeat beasts during your travel 🔶
Graphics (6,5 / 10) :
Overall good atmosphere and design, but some lack of animation during fight and cutscene. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3263723218
Gameplay (6.5 / 10) :
Two main gameplays : The world map, where you can explore the world, and use resource (meat) collected on battle for restoring on campfire And the battle system, really classic turn based RPG, with multiples skill to use, depending of the weapon style used (Spear for debufing / Dagger for multiples strikes …) https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3263718993 You also win weapon xp for more additional weapons skill, and party xp for more HP / ATQ for your characters.
Price (4,5 / 10) :
Game cost 21€, and still in heavy early Access, with multiples missing features, and in early Access without update since multiples months.
Story/Music/Optimization (5 / 10) :
Some story, with many dialogues, but lack of animation https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3263723055 The music is overall good, differents music for fights / world map exploration. Lack of optimization and loading on opening game, need to play in on an SSD for loading properly (played on a i5; RAM = 8Go; VRAM = 2Go)
Final Note (5,6 / 10) :
🔶 Rising Spire is a turn based RPG, with nice graphics, but still in early access, and not really worth the price in the current state 🔶 💚💚💚 : - Nice graphics - Simple but efficient gameplay. ❌❌❌ : - High Price - Still in early Access without update for months / many missing features. - Weak optimization (need to play on a SSD storage)
I backed this game on Kickstarter and it has come a long way since the demo! Early access is a great fit for this game and I can't wait to see the game develop and how the story unfolds. I love the art of the game and the weapon switch system is an amazing twist on classic turn base combat that holds a lot of potential for really cool builds and play style choices.
A while back I was playing a AAA game based on classic comic book characters and the experience was like being waterboarded with gonorrhea urine. This game is the complete opposite of that. While big studios will defecate out poorly crafted games and incomplete messes while begging for money to change the hat on your protagonist, this game (while still in early access) is a passionately birthed baby from a small group of talented artists. It feels like a classic JRPG polished to the standards of 2023. I'm a big fan of turn based combat and if you are too, play this game. The art style mixed with the sound somehow transports me back to being a child yet somehow I know something like this couldn't have been made back then. You know how games will released some like "Definitive Edition" or "Founder's Pack" or some ♥♥♥♥ that always includes the soundtrack and art from the game? Well, I'm genuinely looking forward to owning an art book, whether digital or physical, of this game.
We'll update our Review over time, but we've completed all the Content the game has to offer so far and that's why it's labeled "Early Access". A lot of Content is still coming so please know that if you purchase and get to the end wondering "what the heck", it's because EA labels exist for a reason. I will say that what is already there is fantastic, but it's only a couple of hours worth of Content, so don't expect this one to be a "long" RPG just yet. I'll honestly say I'm not a Turn-Based RPG person. I'd much rather be neck deep in a 3rd or 1st person RPG or Survival game, or a Farming Sim, but occasionally I'll find an RPG that sparks my interest and usually, they're Triple A titles that have tons of features and Content to keep me busy. That being said? We naturally see so many titles on Twitter due to the Nature of our Brand and Content, that when I saw what seemed to be Sokka baked into an RPG I had to check it out. I'll happily say that while the main character does have Sokka vibes, the story is incredibly original and the cutscenes and art are beautiful. You can tell a lot of heart and soul is being poured into this one. The visuals are also amazing and while we suggested that they add some depth to the items in buildings to allow for a better visual experience, the graphics themselves are vibrant and enjoyable. The soundtrack only adds to that as our viewers were quite literally saying "can we download this music anywhere? It's so peaceful" and they're right. If you want to support an EA game that has a ton of heart in it with some great features still under development, then consider supporting this one, and feel free to ask us any questions about it in the comments section of the video below.
