The concept is great, but the game needs more work. I'll probably keep playing here and there because the time period is really interesting and the developer has clearly already put great effort into the making of this game. The game mechanics also don't seem bad at all. The reason I'm saying I wouldn't recommend buying the game is that it seems like an early access game to me. My first experiences with the game were: - Could only change music volume in-game (the music is great btw) but had to turn down volume in volume mixer anyway because effects volume was too loud. - Loaded into the tutorial and was confused for 15 minutes because I didn't know what I was supposed to do; it turned out the tutorial was bugged and restarting it loaded it normally. - UI felt confusing (not horrible but quite bad), the UI just doesn't feel like it's up to the level of a fully released game and for example after moving my army on a district it took a while to figure out where I can take control of the district, as clicking on the district wasn't the right answer but rather finding the buttong in the army actions. Reports are just a column of text that is kind of hard to read. - Couldn't figure out whether you can change the scrolling speed of the map, at least in-game there wasn't an option in the settings, it was really sluggish. I didn't play for even an hour and I ran into all these issues, which in my opinion shouldn't happen since the game is apparently supposed to be fully released and costs 25€. I hope the developer keeps working on it because I like the project and the concept is really good, just doesn't feel like a fully released game that I could recommend anyone to buy right now.
Rise of the White Sun differentiates itself from other grand strategy games by embracing it's historical era fully. Every character and army has a level of loyalty to you, even if it is not your character or army. Every social class in every town also has a statistic determining how much they like you. Resources are scarce, and oftentimes armies don't even have enough rifles for their own men, much less artillery guns and machine guns. Other warlords serve themselves solely, which can be used to get them to desert to your side. This also applies to your allied warlords, who may betray you if you're doing poorly, or sustain themselves by looting your towns if you're doing well. This creates a ruthlessly pragmatic gameplay style that is unlike any game I've ever played. However it is not without downsides. The controls and mechanics are fairly unintuitive but more importantly confusing, which can largely be contributed to the lackluster tutorial that does a very poor job of actually explaining the fairly complex game(I'd recommend joining the Discord for advice). Despite this it is packed with content, there are plenty of factions to choose from and many have completely unique mechanics and playstyles. Making the game very replayable, and overall I'd recommend it to fans of grand strategy games or people interested in the Warlord Era.
