I honestly did not expect very much from this, but to my surprise, it's actually a pretty decent roguelite-ish experience (good foundation for one anyway). So it's kind of like a turn-based roguelite, except that you have 5 fingers instead of 5 warriors. The game has several areas with multiple fights and a few random bosses at the end of each level. After each boss fight you can add 2 rings to your collection which allows you to start with a different loadout - the more rings you collect, the more you can bring the next run (basically deck building). In general, the game seems to have a nice level of complexity and decision making, providing multiple ways to play. There are several interesting mechanics such as trapping monster spirits into your rings and upgrading rings at the forge. It's a little confusing at first because the game throws a lot of information at you, but I kind of appreciate the fact that it does not hold your hand entire time, considering there is a hand on the screen.
Pros:
+ nice variety of unique rings and effects + some interesting mechanics, like trapping spirits into rings + unique concept, good challenge + achievements
Cons:
Description Problems - the game occasionally fails to describe some of its important functions. Not a huge problem, but it could waste some of your time. Note that if you add an upgraded ring to your collection, it does not keep the upgrade, you lose the ring during the run, and it will allow you to add the same ring, even if you already have it. Overall Thoughts on EA (july/2/2019): I am really enjoying its grinding loop, there is something fun about finding a powerful ring and then hoping you can kill a boss to add it to the collection. There are not too many objective issues, mostly the developer just needs to update some of the text so you don't make any stupid choices. Follow The Cpt Froggy Club Curator Page for plenty more!
Ring the City: ~~~~~~~~~~ Rings are beautiful pieces of jewellery, and some of them have a significant meaning for we humans. They can share and represent the love between a man and a woman. They can also represent a family name. But most of them represent beauty or some sort of wealth for whoever wears them. But what if rings had powers? Depending on which ring you wear, you might be able to strike an enemy with fire or chilling ice spells, or defend yourself with a magic shield. Wouldn’t that be great? Well, here is your chance to find out all about this type of ring as you enter the dungeon of Ring the City. Ring the City is an strategy/adventure/rogue-like game developed and published by Giant Network as early access on 1st of July 2019 on Steam. When you play the game for the first time, you’ll be greeted with a short introduction and tutorial. After that, you’ll be ready to jump right into the Ring the City Dungeon. The dungeon consists of five levels of fights and a boss fight. As you start your quest, you’ll have a specific loadout of rings to choose from. As soon as you enter, you’ll have three dark tunnels, which may consist of two dark tunnels and one of the following: a chest, a forge, a locked tunnel or a person. You may even have an area with one tunnel, a forge and a chest. It really depends on the stages, as they are randomised, which is a lot of fun. Moving through a tunnel activates a fight. In many cases, on the right side of your screen, you’ll have an arrow facing towards your left. As you click on it, you’ll have three different items: health potions, torches or metal fingers. These items can only be found in chests. If you have enough torches, you can throw a torch into a tunnel to find out which enemy lies there. There, you can choose which enemy you’ll be fighting next. If you have lost a finger in a previous battle, use a metal finger as a substitute. You might also find a character, with whom you can trade items, talk, or take on in a fight. Interestingly, you, as the hero, have five fingers and you can wear a total of 9 rings. To give you some insight, the Frog Prince will have three fingers for a maximum of 6 rings, the octopus has two fingers for a maximum of 4 rings, and the werewolf has five fingers for a maximum of 9 rings (the thumb can only hold one ring). Make sure that you evaluate each of the tunnels (which you can do if you have a torch) in order to choose the easiest five fights to reach a boss fight. Each time you manage to defeat an enemy, you can take one of three randomised rings belonging to the enemy. However, as they will be randomized at the end of each fight, they might not be the ones you really want. You might also be able to trap the defeated spirit into a spirit rings (if you have one handy). Bear in mind that you only have nine rings to fit on your fingers and an additional 5 in your backpack. In terms of the fighting sequences, it works as a turn-based system. The attack rings must be filled with many before you can activate them. You must have tank rings on one or more fingers in order to charge the attacking rings. It will take one or more turns to charge these rings, depending on how many attacking rings you are wearing and how big your tank rings are. You might have three rings that require 6 mana points each to activate. Well, with a 30 mana-point tank ring, you’ll be able to fill them all up in one turn, but if your tank ring has only 12 mana points, it will take three turns to fill them up. The goal is to destroy your opponent’s fingers to win the battle. Do this five times and you’ll reach a boss fight. If you manage to win a boss fight, you’ll be able to transfer two rings to your personal loadout, but you’ll lose these rings for your next fight. However, when you restart a game, these rings will be up for selection straight away. Personally, I found this game quite addictive, and I enjoyed discovering the different combinations that the rings bring you as you go along. With 180 rings available, it will take you quite a while to master all the combinations, which creates great re-playability. Nice graphics, and the games run well. It is currently as an early access on Steam, and I look forward to seeing any upcoming updates. A solid game so far. Positives: ~~~~~~~ + Nice graphics + Plenty of opponents and rings + Good re-playability + Achievements Negatives: ~~~~~~~~~ - No trading cards - A bit repetitive Make sure to wear the right rings or you might lose a few fingers and the battle in Ring the City! 7/10 Key provided by developer/publisher for review purposes. My virus scanner blocked the .exe. The game feels slow. I don't really like the music. Great concept for a game.
So, as a lot of people here have said, this has a deck-builder type feel, but utilizing rings and a less randomized loadout. It's an interesting concept, but ultimately, it turns up pretty lackluster (at least for now). A big problem I have with the game is that the computer is clearly cheating. The player has to choose what ring they're going to use without knowing what the enemy is going to do, but regardless of what patterns and ways I use to attempt to outsmart the computer, it never accidentally uses a defensive ring or picks the wrong finger like I might. It clearly plays reactively, which gives it a major advantage when using certain types of rings that rely on timing and the chance of failure as a balance to how strong the ring is. That flaw in the gameplay tips this game into the 'do not recommend' pile for me. It could be an interesting game, but ultimately, certain battles are just an uphill battle of trying to wear out an opponent that never fails in its defensive timing, which doesn't make them unwinnable, but can often wear down the player a lot. Also, ultimately, there's not a lot of variety, the art style is mediocre, and the enemies always have the same ring setup based on the type of enemy, so it gets pretty redundant fairly quickly. Without having the randomization of a deckbuilder, where you have to adapt to the cards in your hand, this game is technically more strategic because there's less randomness, but most battles come down to just reusing the same tactics again and again. If you can get the game really cheap (as part of a bundle or for a dollar or two), I could see how it might be a fun little temporary diversion. I think the premise is cool, and I want to recommend it, but as it is, it's just so-so.
** I came back to this game, and I am rewriting my review. My OG review is at the bottom** After returning to the cave after months of not thinking about this game and then remembering that it existed, I was able to beat it again on my first run (using my old strat), and then again by using a different strategy/different character. This made me realize that, while the game still has hella charm, and is a genuinely innovative and exciting design take on enginebuilding roguelikes, the game is quite solveable (which is a death knell for roguelikes, to be honest). I think I could win close to 100% of the time with my melee "deck", and probably similarly with any other strategy that takes its core components into the dungeon with it. The fact that you can effectively bring an entire strategy into the dungeon with you trivializes everything else this game does well. I suggest the devs severely limit what you can bring into the dungeon, and find ways of subverting the currently optimal strategies. --OG Review-- Cute game with an excellent concept and so much charm/character. The mechanics could be super interesting, but right now its a bit simple, a bit solvable, and a bit short. But its in EA, and shows promise. I beat it on my 5th attempt after 7 hours, which is very short for a roguelike, but like I said, its in EA.
It had a lot of potential but, as far as I can tell, as of July 2021, there hasn't been any development on this game since some time in 2019.
I just really enjoy this little title. It is quite a unique concept. I would describe it as somewhat of a blend between a tactical roguelite and a sequencing puzzle game. As strange as that sounds it does work quite well in my opininion. The graphics and music are nice and building up your hand (literally) can feel awesome. The thing that most impressed me is the number of enemies, each with there own unique ring and thus skill configuration. This makes most fights really tactical and meeting new enemies quite exciting. I would love to see the develolpment continue to expand upon this further. All of this does not mean however that the game is without flaws. One thing that should be worked on is the feedback in battles. Sometimes it is really hard to tell what just happend. A battlelog and pop-ups for succsessful rng-rolls could do wonders here, especially because you and the enemy attack simultaneously. The english translation of the game is alright, although sometimes the choice of words seems a bit odd, nothing to major tho. Same goes for bugs and balancing. All in all this game is quite enjoyable as it currently stands and definitely worth it´s low price.
