Summary
Ricky Recharge is a finely tuned and polished shoot'em up (electrify 'em, more like), score-attack, arcade game. Its old-school mechanics and feel wrapped in modernly stylized graphics and adrenaline-pumping music make it a sweet retreat for every one who wants a break from heavy-narrative games (like I did) or just to unwind and challenge themselves a bit. This is my honest opinion of the game.

Stats

Time played so far: 6+ hours
Highest score so far: a cool one million (1,146,715) https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3092595835
Achievements unlocked: 13/46

Gameplay

It's very straightforward and that's part of its appeal for me: Stay alive by killing rogue robots trying to get you.
There's a single level you side scroll through from left to right and vice versa.
On each side of this level, there's a recharge station in order to -you got it- recharge your unique gun. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3092633495
Your gun has two polarities: red and blue. You need to switch the polarity according to the color of the enemy closest to you, neutralize it then switch again if the next enemy is of a different color/polarity.
Enemy robots feature three varieties only yet I didn't feel bored or wanting more at all. That's just a testament to how well-designed the existing three are.
It also sort of proves how engrossing and atmospheric a developer can make their game with few cleverly-utilized assets. Ahem! Looking at you big studios.
There's a shop with vital upgrades in the game. Its currency is coins you gather from neutralizing the baddie robots.
Here's the catch: The shop is accessible in your run only. That means any upgrades you unlocked in a run do not carry over to the next.
What does carry over is your ever-increasing skill at the game.
The game is not easy but it isn't that difficult either. Like all arcade games, Ricky Recharge places your survival heavily on understanding the simple game mechanics and developing your muscle memory.
The moderate pace of the game makes it ideal for people who would like to try difficult but not frantic games. i.e. you don't need to possess the reflexes of a teenager to enjoy it and 'git gud' here!
Each run you have three lives at the start. If you're crafty, you can save up coins to buy more 1-Ups but they're pricey and you need to survive a fair bit to save for those. https://steamcommunity.com/id/VolcanicPM/screenshot/2278320415807237102/

Pros

Fun and stylish. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3092632751
Smooth, bug-free gameplay.
Challenging yet fair. Every time I died, I knew exactly what I had done wrong and took note of it. The game punishes you for your mistakes only, nothing else. This keeps you engaged and on your toes. https://steamcommunity.com/id/VolcanicPM/screenshot/2278320415804889767/
Bite-sized gaming sessions. Your run can be anywhere between 10 minutes to ... however long you can survive!
Easy-on-the-eye stylish graphics. They exude post-apocalyptic vibes but not too dreadful.
Great music score. Also Ricky's little voice reactions alert you to important things like needing to recharge or losing your multiplier.
The robots actually 'feel' like robots.
Very beginner-friendly with an in-game guide. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3092636531

Cons

Lack of ability to redefine controls. The game is very controller-friendly, to the detriment of kb+m veterans like myself. https://steamcommunity.com/id/VolcanicPM/screenshot/2278320415807130073/ To give you an idea, the mouse is disabled as soon as you launch the game. That didn't stop me from enjoying the game with keyboard only though.
Having only one level. I haven't felt it yet but I'm guessing that if I played for another 10 hours, I'd be itching for a change of scenery at least.

Achievements

Total: 46
Grindy but doable.
How long they take to unlock depends entirely on how skilled you are at the game. The more time I spent playing, the more honed mine got.
The game doesn't grant a +1 Perfect Game yet. I honestly feel a bit puzzled as to why this gem of a game didn't get more recognition than it has so far.

Conclusion
Recommended! You cannot go wrong with such a polished, fun experience, especially at this price. Ricky Recharge runs smoothly on the steam deck and is perfect for filling time with a quick game. I really like the simple yet challenging gameplay. It's a fun and addictive mechanic that kept me coming back for more. Great graphic style. It's fun to see the whole surrounding react to the battle forces. The colorful and vibrant particle explosions are a pleasure to look at, and the character designs are charming and memorable. The sound design is also well done, with catchy music and satisfying voice-over to get you in the mood for battle. Overall, I highly recommend "Ricky Recharge" to anyone looking for a fun and engaging game that's perfect for filling time with a few quick rounds. It's a great pick for both casual and hardcore gamers alike.
While Ricky Recharge may have a simple premise at first glance, this side scrolling arcade shooter really shocked me by how addicting it was to get your name to the top of the leaderboards. It features a simple control scheme where you slide, shoot, move either left or right, scan, and emp blast your enemies to chain combos together and reach that high score. The graphics look great and the music helps add to that arcade feeling. If you go into this with the right attitude of expecting a simple arcade game then I promise you will not be let down by it. Ricky Recharge is just a ton of fun and I think it is well worth its price tag of $10. Hopefully the developers can add some more levels just to spice things up but this will definitely be one where I keep coming back to so I can keep my Top 10 leaderboard spot. P.S. play this with a controller, the keyboard controls are fine but playing this on controller feels much better and easier to chain moves together.
This game is true to the classic arcade style of game play. Ricky Recharge is quite addicting and simple to understand. There is never a break in the action as you find yourself constantly adjusting your strategy to stay alive. The graphics are quite stunning and the character design of Ricky is indeed memorable. This game will continue to challenge your wit as Ricky battles his adversaries. Even after playing I find myself planning my next phase of attack to get the next best score. So go on and give Ricky Recharge a try.
This game is an absolute blast. Even though i haven't played it for long yet, it feels like a great polished game. The concept is so simple yet the gameplay never gets old. Replayability is in my opinion high, it's a great game for a short or (if you're skilled) long play inbetween sessions. Scoreboard is fun and challenging. See you in the leaderboards!
Can recommend that little gold game. Runs smoothly on the Deck and is a lot of fun. Reached Top 10 in a day, I guess I would fall down quick, if the Game would be more popular. Art Style is what I like, the background interacts dynamically. Good purchase.
Ricky Recharge Review - Team Recharge (A group of homies that like video games.) In the interest of full disclosure, Ricky Recharge was provided by the developer, Team Recharge, however, all the opinions you are about to read are my own, and no one is paying me to report on this game, nor did anyone review or approve what you are about to read. Given to me by John Buise - Big Thanks Not a shooter but it’s a resource management action shooter with a mix of Ikaruga/Outlast/Silhouette Mirage thrown in for good measure, Treasure/Housemarque makes some of my favorite games. The mechanics remind me of what those developers would use. Gave it a fair shot before reviewing Run based like Geometry Wars - one arena, survive. Arcade game at its core I’ve played it for over 10 hours. Had 1 bug that I can’t reproduce, froze 3 times but unfroze. Ran great overall and never crashed. The game is slow paced in the beginning. I had this challenge with games like Geometry Wars but it’s a non issue once the game ramps up and is filled with enemies. You are going back and forth in an arena, using your blaster to destroy small and large robots, with a sprinkle of drones. Your weapon runs on a charge that you must refill using the energy tanks on both sides of the arena, and managing them is the key to staying alive longer. Enemies drop power ups to make your gun more powerful, run faster, shield yourself, and other abilities. These power-ups are timed and you can upgrade how long they last. As you destroy bots, they drop orbs, you can use these orbs in the shop to upgrade your abilities, such as your gun, your stamina for more slides, more health…etc. The game has a mechanic where you change your polarity where if you match the color of the enemies, you'll do more damage. You'll want to keep this in mind so you are not wasting your ammunition as you do less damage if you are the opposite polarity. Character texture is not great. Very simple character model. I think the bots look more fun than the main character does. He could benefit from some texture work. Unity Tileset at work maybe? I like how the gameplay forces you to be mindful of your resources, you don’t know this right away. I thought “blow everything up” right away. But you soon find that this isn’t the case. There is a strategy for how to dispatch enemies. When the game picks up, it’s adrenaline filled. This is where you’re chaining all your abilities together, combined with pickups to keep your chain going. Sliding past an enemy, grabbing a stasis, then mounting an enemy, then setting it off to self destruct felt awesome. Your heart pumps to keep your combo going. One pain point is spending weapon charge to open the shop, but you can use your Overcharged power-up to open the door for free. It's a resource management game so this is part of the meta, which I believe is a good thing. Adds tension to the moment to moment gameplay, and the sound effects really help this, which is a great segway…. Music overall is pretty good, but not quite exceptional. Mainly one song, which is not a problem, and the main song is good but I feel it’s the wrong song for how hectic the game becomes later on. The music gives the game a very chill atmosphere. Sound effects are exceptional, and give good feedback. The sound of the gun, the lightning, the electricity, the explosions, all sound fantastic. Ricky’s voice is super fun. My favorite line is “All Day”. I love it. Good music can make a bad game average and an average game good and a good game exceptional. Luckily this games’ music doesn’t bring the game down, but adds some charm to the combat. I wish it did more, but again, overall it’s solid. The credits theme is excellent however! I know I did not enjoy the character model texture, but the lighting effects and animations are excellent. They are the star of the visuals. Ricky animates well and the bots are very lumbering, it’s a good floaty cloud feel to the movement due to how it animates. I like how Ricky looks and sounds in motion. It’s a treat when all the lighting effects are going off. MISC Allow Custom Controls, I know this can be a time consuming process, but this could help with accessibility. However, the default controls are excellent so this should be a non issue for most players. However I don't see a colorblind option? I'm not colorblind but I’m assuming people who are could have issues with this kind of game??? Could use roguelite elements - I hate them in non survival games but adore them in survival modes and games like this could benefit if done properly. The developer listens to feedback. They added dpad support on request and it makes the game control so much better. Overall I would recommend it because some of my criticisms are only preferences and only enhance what is already there, excellent gameplay which counts to me. Sound effects and the lighting effects are really fun as well. Solid “A-” and well worth the asking price of $10 and a very good arcade game. Definitely check it out.
Good game.
A very nice, challenging and incredibly addictive game. Even though I am not a huge fan of this genre, the Ricky Recharge game hooked me immediately. The "One more run and I am going to sleep" feature, while improving my skills and uncovering new game mechanics, is definitely present in this arcade package. I can't wait for new updates!!!
