Space Warpster is the kind of shmup I like to play. I tend to avoid bullet heaven tags on Steam because I just find them overwhelming, but Space Warpster relies on old school fast reflexes and positioning to survive. If you enjoyed shmups in the 80's and 90's then you will love this one. It's reminiscent of Spectrum games of that era with pixel graphics and a colour pallette you will recognize, but it feels superior and smoother to play. The soundtrack is amazing, but probably a bit more advanced than they had at that time, but it fits the game perfectly and elevates the excitement factor. There are three difficulty levels to choose from and a bonus level you can try at any time. It looks like a new bonus level is going to be added soon too. There is one leader board which amalgamates all three difficulty levels. I'm surprised there wasn't a separate leader board for each difficulty. There's also achievements to earn and keyboard or controller can be used. The game is reasonably difficult on any of the difficulty levels. There's a noticeable difference in the amount of bullets and enemies, but to be honest I didn't find a huge leap up in difficulty. It will be a challenge to get through the game I believe. I'm not sure how many levels there are, but I have got to level six and always seem to run out of lives there. Each level has new mechanics and more difficult enemies and at the end of each level there is a boss to defeat. The bosses are quite basic and not very elaborate. They tend to stay in their lane and just shoot projectiles at you but they're still fun to defeat. Obviously, these types of games are quite repetitive because you start from the beginning and repeat the same game play over and over after you die, but that's to be expected. There are power ups during the game which you can pick up, usually after defeating a chain of enemies, which either increase your offensive power like double bullets, rockets, and bombs, or defensive power ups like shields. Power ups on each level will always be the same because they tend to fit the enemy type at the time. For example, if you're coming up to a barrage of ground defences, a power up will give you bombs to drop on them, and if you are up against fast and agile enemies, the power ups tend to be heat seeking missiles. There's no way of choosing what you prefer. Power ups have a short time span and disappear after about twenty seconds. As well as enemy projectiles, expect to dodge rockets and mines fired from the ground and you'll need to avoid permanently fixed objects on the game screen and flying objects like asteroid belts. I'd like to see my score highlighted a bit better. Currently, it is very small and I didn't even notice it when I was playing. I'd like to see separate leader boards for each difficulty level, and maybe some noticeable sound effects or visible reward when shooting a whole chain of enemies. I found shooting enemies on the ground quite cumbersome. Sometimes, I couldn't get low enough to shoot them and if you haven't picked up the bomb upgrade, this makes life very difficult. Otherwise, this was a very fun game to play.
Final Thoughts

Space Warpster is a decent retro shmup which will appeal to retro gamers and those who like a simpler shoot em up experience. It's fast paced but rewards skilful game play and fast reactions. As always with these games, they are best played in frequent short bursts because of repetitiveness but Space Warpster is a lot of fun to play.

Thank you for reading my review. I played it through to the end a couple of times. Don't have much to say about this one. It's retro and decent, though nothing about it is particularly striking either. Competent little indie retro shmup.
I’m playing on a Mac and just bought the full version. And it’s all worth the 5 bucks! Because this game brings back a lot of nostalgic memories for me. I've only been playing for about 30 minutes, and I'm already hooked. As a kid, I practically lived in arcades and spent an embarrassing amount of coins on games like this. My mom wasn't exactly thrilled about it. Thankfully, I don't have to keep feeding coins into a machine to continue playing this one. As a retro arcade game, I think it's a complete success. It's easy to pick up, and always fun to come back to. The soundtrack adds a truly authentic vibe and is a joy to listen to. I'm definitely determined to unlock all the Steam achievements and complete every level. With each new run, I'm learning getting a little better. 5 Stars!
¡Buen trabajo, AMAMiZU games!
Nicely realised ode to Zynaps on the Spectrum / CPC, without the annoying inertia!
I'm an '80s kid, and back then I spent half my life on my Commodore 64. I played countless hours of games like Parallax, Uridium and Choplifter, so playing this feels like paradise — and like coming home. :) Pixel art: 10/10 Gameplay: 10/10 (harder than you think!) Music: 10/10 Nostalgia factor: 11/10 :)
Remember how hard games were on the NES or C64? This is a game cut from that cloth. You have 3 lives and your wits, that's all! The game is obviously retro and reminiscent of "Life Force" https://youtu.be/jHVA-yTS3zc?si=y0OJ5aiJ6zA35ruN If you liked that game as a kid, you are gonna love this one! The music is way better though :) I listened to the sound track on loop all day. It's that good in my opinion. Nothing earth shatteringly novel here just old school twitchy shoot'em up fun suited for a lunch break at work.
So far, I enjoyed playing this game a ton. It reminds me of Space Impact, which was a classic game you could find from the old Nokia phones, but this is actually way better, with a killer soundtrack. The graphics are on point, and it gets the job done simulating an arcade game from the 80's. Kudos to all people involved in this project!
This is a decent shmup that just needs more. The pickups are fun and unique and the soundtrack fits the theme, but after that more needs to be done for someone to be influenced to purchase this game. The first stage is fair, but the second stage I'm not even sure what kills me half the time. All I know is it's white, it comes from behind and it isn't the green balls. So I die on the second stage, and am forced to start from the beginning without any progress or ship upgrade. IMO, there should be a very easy mode and maybe ship upgrade cards or some sort of roguelite abilities. The actual shmup part is a 10/10, but this shmup is short sighted. Still an excellent shmup, that just needs more. Full controller support. https://steamcommunity.com/groups/indieretrogamers
