Revenguard is yet another of literally thousands of 2D retro platformers infesting Steam and lowering the average quality of all video games everywhere. This one is a kind of quest-ish precision platformer, which is unfortunate due to the poor controls and hit-and-miss hitboxing. Despite the medieval theme, alien blobs steal your dog so you have to do a bunch of platforming. Believe it or not, I've seen worse concepts for platformers. Not much worse, but worse. One important note is that even though this is an amateur project, it does seem to be sincerely and genuinely made. I couldn't find any flipped assets, plagiarism or any other kind of insincere actions from the developer, but unfortunately genuine intentions alone are not enough to produce a brilliant PC gaming experience. On the upside, the game does feature customisable controls and resolution, so at least some of the basic, minimum requirements have been met. Unfortunately there's a number of other technical defects and shortcomings which contribute to the game being difficult to recommend to gamers. A choice was made to use obsolete, decades old retro pixel "art" as a substitute for contemporary PC graphics. It's unclear if this is due to lack of budget or talent, regardless, the overall visual quality of the game is extremely low as a result. While there are options to change the resolution for the game, all this does is scale up the simplistic 2D art assets used to make the game, which makes little or no difference to the graphics quality. Without any other substantial graphics tweaks, it's not possible for gamers to improve the lacklustre 2D visuals. While not necessarily a deal breaker, the game does lack polish and a few elements are a little clunky/unsmooth, this is still rough around the edges. There's also some reports of bugs which may result in a negative user experience. Your mileage may vary on this. The controls and game handling are notably very floaty and imprecise. It's janky and unsatisfying to play... and any experienced gamer will tell you, the handling, responsiveness and general gameplay feel of the control scheme must be well polished for this kind of game to succeed. Unfortunately, this is something the developer seems to have phoned in, with little to no apparent gameplay testing or polish done. This looks a lot like it was designed for consoles, but released on Steam instead by mistake. While this is on PC, it has all the hallmarks and deficiencies of a console game, from the clunkier than needed control scheme to the less than cutting edge graphics. There's 10's of thousands of PC games on Steam, and PC gamers deserve only the best. This might not appeal to many gamers due to the lack of PC-centric design. It's unclear why this never made it to the video game console appliances it seems to have been designed for. These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game. The poor quality of this game is reflected by how many people spent time with it. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the all-time peak player number was only 2 players. This is a remarkably low number, and now, the only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam and well over 100,000 games for gamers to choose from, the overwhelming lack of interest in this low quality game is to be expected. So, should you buy this game? Is this one of the best of the 100,000+ games on Steam? Revenguard has the cash grab price of $10 USD, for which you could easily get any number of older AAA games. Given the defects and quality issues with the game, coupled with the unrealistic price, this is impossible to recommend. For comparison, the $10 asking price for this game could get you games like "Pillars of Eternity II", "Far Cry 5" or "The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt". No pixelcrap is worth $10. If developers want to get paid the same kind of money as real game developers who know how to do graphics properly, they need to learn how to do graphics properly.
Profile Features Limited! Valve have marked this game as "Profile Features Limited" at the time of this review. This is usually caused by poor sales figures and low community acceptance for the game (to date). Until this status changes, this game will not give you +1 to your Game Collector badge count, appear in profile achievements or any other Steam meta-accomplishments, nor can it be displayed in some profile showcases. If these factors are important to you, it may be worth holding off before buying this game.
I'm surprised! Thank you so much for the key. The game works great just a shame about the partial controller support I like to play games with a controller. The graphics of the game are fantastic. I love pixel games they remind me of my childhood. I'm not really into jumping games I've had a few rage quits and would appreciate some baby mode please. I played the game with a friend and we both enjoyed it.
Cute and challenging game. Some of the jumps have to be pixel perfect which can be a little tedious. Overall, it is a fun game that is worth the price.
UPDATE: the recent patch fixed most issues I had with the game, especially the almost visible threats. For this reason I'm changing my review to recommended. There is no story to be found. The game begins with a tentacle monster grabbing your dog out of nowhere. When you first start the game, the settings are a little confusing. When using a gamepad, you'll notice that left and right are inverted. And there is a glitch in which music and sound effects didn't play until I hit Alt-Tab to the desktop and then back into the game. The volume is also very low. The game is a platformer adventure where you keep dying from many things until you learn the placement. There's nothing wrong with that because, despite the required precision and frustrating sections, you can overcome obstacles with your jump and patience. A separate button for climbing is useless because you need it only one. Another minor aspect of the game is finding something and using it in the correct location. The main issues are gameplay and art. To be clear, the pixel art is quite lovely and colorful. However, there is no obvious indication on what can or cannot kill you. Each death you experience feels cheap. A prickly plant, for example, will not kill you, but a single large thorn sticking out will. Then you enter a cave filled with crystals that may or may not be lethal. If that’s not enough, you’ll love deaths from falling. It’s too rigorous and kills you even when a jump is perfectly fine. One graphics problem is particularly irritating. When you enter dark areas, the screen's edges get fuzzy and dark. However, when you return to the open, the screen does not always restore to normal. A quest can be ruined by death or bad design. In one section, you must pick up a sheep and deliver it to a shepherd. However, if you die while holding the sheep, you will be unable to proceed in the game since the sheep simply vanishes. This is resolved if you exit the game and continue from the last checkpoint. Another broken quest happens towards the end. You can't get the key item because it's near an enemy that kills when you touch it. The twist is that the game still acts as if you have the item and allows you to continue. There are checkpoints, so if you're determined, you can get through. But it isn't all good. If a checkpoint has a lethal trap nearby, you may respawn directly on top of it. This can put you in an endless loop until you press the button to go away during a respawn. One example is when bees start following you after you stole their honey. Bees simply stay at the respawn place and continue to kill you as soon as you move. Despite the three difficulty levels, the classic mode is the best approach to play the game. Hard mode reduces the number of checkpoints, while extreme mode completely removes them. Achievements are given for dying from various things and progressing through the game. All of them can be obtained in a single playthrough.
