Look. If you're getting this game after reading the reviews, you know exactly what you're getting into. This is not a particularly great or finished game, but it is an experience that for the price of a coffee, come on, I can recommend having like half an hour of fun with it and reminiscing on old rally games. It's not a game that no effort went into. It's clear that the developer was inspired by old rally racing games such as one of my favorites, V-Rally 3 for Gameboy Advance/GBA. It very much nails this atmosphere, down to the crunchy direction voice lines and signs, the super overt checkpoints, the cheesy setting including fire breath checkpoints (haha), the motor noises, the wacky physics. It's really throwing me back to my childhood in a lot of ways. And that's exactly what I got out of it! Now, some feedback to give and some things that I would like to say to the developer: - Hey, congrats on making and releasing a game! Don't beat yourself up over the reception you got so far. Don't let it get to your self esteem. You got way further than most other game devs out there already by releasing a project. The models are really cool and it's clear that this is neither an asset flip nor did no heart go into it. The atmosphere very much works as intended for me and it's a clear throwback into the retro rallye games you want to emulate. - Remove the language options if you haven't actually localized the game into those languages. The English language is fine, but the other ones I tried are utterly broken. The font you chose doesn't have German letters (äöüß), so the text is almost entirely unreadable. Plus, you used machine translation, and very bad machine translation at that. Just as an example, the word "passed" at the end of a race translates to something like "mountain pass-ed"; the word "language" turns into the equivalent of "linguistically". Just remove languages if you don't have a real translation. If you want someone to translate for you, - Speaking of fonts, the default font is a good font for accents and race times, but not at all for all text in the game, menus and everything. It is hard to read. Choose some nostalgic bitmap font instead. Also, give it some clearance from the edge of the screen - the text shouldn't start at the verrry edge of my monitor. Make it go further to the middle somewhere so it doesn't feel so cramped. - The time you have to pass should be displayed while racing, so you don't find out in the very end. This also leads to really suspenseful "can I make it??" situations that are super important to this genre. - The car reset (R) is fine, but it'd be better if you had to hold the button; to prevent accidental resets. - There really, really, really needs to be more than one music track in the game. Also, there's silence at its beginning. Cut that out, because otherwise you're in complete silence for a few seconds until the music starts. - The SFX volume is all over the place. The explosion sound when going through checkpoints is wayyyy too loud. - Speaking of SFX, some more sound effects would really go a long way. Menu selection beeps, applause when you finish a race (or aww's if you lose, haha). - Why is the game called Retro Rally on the store but something else (Nokomo Car something? or something?) during the downloads? Either way, congratulations and I got my money's worth of entertainment out of it. It's Big Rigs: Over the Road Racing but for V-Rallye (GBA) enthusiasts. If the dev improves the game, I'll come back to it again!
A review copy was provided by the developer.
🔶 Retro Rally is a arcade rally, race on 14 tracks with 18 different cars. 🔶 Overall good graphics, just lack of some specific scenery, mainly countryside and canyon scenery, no snow or city based scenery. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3370777697 https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3370777985 Nice selection of cars (18 cars), each of them can be unlocked with money by completing race. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3370778262 Gameplay is pretty good, easy to handle, pretty pleasant to play, and each cars has his own stats (some are more powerful, with better speed, but harder to handle) Game cost 3€, and has a total of 14 tracks, will take around 1-1,5 Hours for main complexion (all 14 tracks completed), and around 3 Hours for 100% (all cars unlocked), good for the cheap price asked. About optimization, nothing to say here, game is pretty fluid and run well, just some long loading time after completing a race. €€€ Here some idea of improvement (as asked by the devs) : - More event carrer, with some event with limited car selection, or race in reverse version of a track - Multiples paint job for the cars - New scenary – Race on snow place / or in a city / night race for some event. €€€ Overall, Retro Rally is a great little arcade rally game with a good content for the cheap price asked, a 1-2 hours long game for the price of a coffee 💚💚💚 : - Nice selection of cars / Each car has his own stats - Pretty good gameplay - Cheap price ❌❌❌ : - Lack of carrer event (only 14 events) - Lack of multiples scenery, mainly only countryside and canyon scenery
Follow IndieGems for more reviews like this one.
Thrash game.
- NO CONTROLLER SUPPORT - Bad UI - Bad translations - Bad track design - Repetitive and annoying music - Laughable car physics - Super ugly shaders - Co-driver sounds as sick and tired of this crap as I am Sorry but this is little more than a demo. Not to bash indie devs in general but just because everyone can make games now it doesn't mean everyone should. Quality of released games on Steam is constantly decreasing and this game is just another example for it. Not going to support this anymore -> refunded.
I like this! I'm having fun playing my way through it and unlocking all the vehicles. They all have a feel of their own and different sounds, too, so it's fun to unlock them. Sure it's not a big AAA game, it's a small indie racer and it's got its own character and its own vibe. As a racing game fan and a rally fan, I'm happy with my purchase. I have two requests, though: 1. Please change the 'change camera view' button so that it's not on the left joystick. As we're steering with the left joystick, it makes it too easy to accidentally change camera view (it happens to me a lot!) 2. If there was some way to make selecting cars and levels easier, that would help a lot. Right now, it always starts the scrolling area at the left, so you have to scroll across to get to the latest car or level. Sometimes when I try to scroll, I accidentally select the wrong thing. Overall, I like this a lot! It's a great price, the physics are fun and the game is good.
Хороший вариант за свои деньги. Просто попробуй)
Chill game with retro style!! I like it. looking forward for new updates!
[12/01/24 Update] Recent improvements have made this a more palatable early-access style game. Controller works for some menus, but not everything (end of race menu, i still have to click things). Arbitrary resolutions are not GUI scaling safe, so there are menu items clipped (16:10 1280x800 resolution for example). The target pointing you towards the next checkpoint could be replaced with a more appropriate wayfinder, or mini-map. I don't think the target fits the rally theme. That being said, I like that there's a wide variety of vehicles and the choices for the initial races are more varied among locales that are more convincingly "rally" and look less like a dev in-progress maps. It would be great to be able to choose among filters that give it a "retro" feel. I can see myself dropping in to this project to see the changes over time and race around. It might be fun to have ai racers attempting to race with the player. Anyway, good progress. [Oct Initial Release Review] It's not there yet. Even if it were early access. This feels like someone's personal after-school game dev project and for what it is so far, it's promising and ambitious. So i encourage this product be worked on further, to add controller support (shouldn't be hard with unity) and some real looking stages (just requires time and maybe a game like colin mcrae rally on ps1 or any number of odd rally games from back in the day for reference\inspiration). Some of the fundamentals are there, like the engines sound decent, handling is baseline fine, but could be more dynamic feeling. I'll follow this project and look forward to revisiting\reviewing it sometime in the future, but for the casual retro racing fan, this isn't ready yet. Don't be discouraged, you have talent.

I have beaten every limit time and unlocked most of the cars in the game. Here are my observations: - Moon-like gravity means your cars feel like they don't have suspension. - Infinitely Rigid collision physics (your car will do flips if you touch a fence or a small dirt embankment) - The road is so low poly in some cases that you can get high-centered ON THE TRACK. - Flat levels have generous time limits, whereas the mountainous levels have extremely tight times for even the highest performance cars. - You cannot use the handbrake option on controller. It seems to just switch your camera to rear-view. - Pressing the left stick (which can happen often during tight corners) switches to a rear-facing camera and requires 4 more taps to switch between different cinematic cameras to get back to a normal camera. This almost always ruins your whole run. - No control customization, so you cannot fix the camera/handbrake issues. - Menus require a mouse and cannot be navigated with a controller. - Draw distance is shorter for trees than for checkpoints. - Frame rate drops often, and the physics interpolation is rough. All in all, what should be Zen is Quite Frusturating.
