Was really hoping I'd like this one, and while there are a fair number of good ideas and features to this, overall I think it's kind of a miss for me. It's not a bad game per se, but I wouldn't really call it good either. There are lot of almost good things here, though. Some examples of "almost good:" The combat has some interesting options but it feels a little stiff and clunky. Slow stamina recharge and limited attack directions bring this down a bit. The environments look good but there is a lack of clarity in what is the foreground and background in a lot of places. Thankfully you won't die from running off an edge or something, but you probably will run into a lot of barriers that look like pathways or you just won't notice the bridge you need to cross. The story and lore seem interesting but they aren't really allowed to flourish, if that makes sense. Everything is weird. Bizarre graffiti covers a city populated by sentient file boxes. A giant cat tunnels through the ground to eat you in the desert. A giant worm eats you when you play music (that's the fast travel system). You turn into a tiny version of that worm because a shattered skinless flesh giant made a DnD character sheet for you. There is a whale named God who sneezes eyeballs at you. This game is strange, but it doesn't really seem to have a rhyme or reason to it. There are other issues with this, too, but that kinda gives a glimpse into my feelings towards the game. I was hoping for a similar experience to HLD, and while it is in the same ballpark, Resolutiion strikes out for me. I give it 2/5 kittens you accidentally found while high on blue goo.
"If it's not fun, why bother" This quote rings true the more I spend time with this game. Please note that my real playtime is 4 hours as I play this game offline on my Steam Deck. I initially bought this thinking that it will be as good as Hyper Light Drifter, with the same art style and all. But this game just feels like a cheap dollar store imitation of HLD. Starting off with the gameplay, immediately I noticed that I could just hold the attack button to initiate the combo. And it didn't exactly feel good as the combo ender animation only consists of 3 frames, I felt it was really low effort. Then I attacked an enemy, and it just did not feel punchy or had an impact on the enemy at all. Enemies are spongy but not in a good way like in HLD because the game does not let you feel the impact with each of your swing, it just felt flat. Oh, and you can get the "dash" ability about an hour into the game. I say "dash" because it's a sprint button that accelerates your movement speed rather than rolling in Dark Souls or dashing in HLD, it didn't exactly feel good to use either as this ability is more used to get out of your opponent's attack range and close in on them faster. The gun is useless and does miniscule amount of damage and use up your energy, which the dash also uses. On the dialogue side, the writing is nonsensical, and I hate to say that word, but it is "cringe". I prefer a more "show, don't tell" approach in regard to cryptic games like these, but these dialogues just took me out of it. I have played games that have cryptic dialogues like Hylics but this game, there is something that I can't quite put my finger on that makes me dislike it very much, pretentious probably? And the music, god the music, it's so generic. In HLD, the ost was so atmospheric and subtle, the music accomodated the environments that you were in, which were ruins, past civilizations that are now desolate and empty. Here it's just the same generic Synthwave chords with 5 - 7 notes played over and over throughout every stages. Overall, I do not vibe with this game, it just makes me want to replay Hyper Light Drifter instead. This game just feels like a cheap soulless imitation of a great game instead. I do not often drop games, but I'd rather not waste my time playing something that I don't like or not immersed in its universe/story.
This feels like a poor knockoff of Hyper Light Drifter. The visuals and music are pretty great, but the combat doesn't have a dodge like HLD or Gungeon, so you spend a lot of time backing away from enemies, then waddling up to slice them. Worse, most of the world is nearly-empty halls, with no clue to what you're supposed to be doing, or where you're supposed to be exploring. I had to quit when a character made some fourth-wall breaking joke about side-quests. The game is far too serious to have goofy jokes like that, and hadn't earned any good-will to ignore it, because of the previously mentioned empty world.
Alright so the reason why I write a review so fast is because I've already completed the switch version of the game, and to be honest, I LOVE THIS GAME. And yes, the fighting system is basic, the pixel art may seem like other games and the story and map is confusing at first, I know. So why do I like it so much ? First, the soundtrack. It is a pure MASTERPIECE. Each song has an identity, the assault tracks are absolutely AWESOME and bring you an energy like you've never seen before Second, the story. It may not seem like it, but Resolutiion has a very complex story, which also leaves space for the players to try to make theories and figure out "What the hell happened here ?" The characters and their designs also give that feeling that makes you wonder about the things behind. Then, there's the look of the game. Everything stands out for me on that part. The minimalistic yet very efficient pixel art, the lights and shadows, the various zones of the game and their elements, the characters and ennemies, they all have something very unique in them, which is again a great thing Now for the things that are not good but not bad : The map system. It's.. difficult, at times, to figure out where you have to go through to get to an objective. It takes some time to actually understand how to read the game's map, but once you get it, you won't struggle anymore. The level design also has issues in some places. The game wants you to explore around but sometimes doesn't make efforts to try to force you to do so, aside of showing you that you need a certain item to keep going but without giving you any idea of where it is, until somehow you stumble upon it. And finally the fighting system and certain items : Again the combat system is very repetitive. Hit, run to avoid attacks, hit, repeat. It may be annoying for certain players but i personally don't mind, as the lack of other options brings an interesting challenge at times against some bosses that can make you feel like in a bullet hell. As for the items, there are some that you can just finish the game without using them, at all. The last thing I have to say in this review before concluding is that, and it's fully personnal, the difficulty of the game is perfectly adjusted for me. The bosses go from easy to really challenging, giving you a feeling of progress that only a few games gave me. In short, Resolutiion is great but misunderstood. It suffers from certain aspects that most gamers aren't used to see, but if you manage to like, or at least accept those aspects, and dig a bit deeper in the world that the game offers.. you might find a true masterpiece, that can bring your imagination to whole new places, with those awesome soundtracks and that complex universe hidden under layers of confusion. And that. That's what I seek in modern games. Developpers have to make us imagine things without revealing all to us. And Monolith of minds perfectly understood it.
This game is pretty cool. It looks like Hyper Light Drifter, but plays more like classic Zelda. The difficulty is just right. The exploration is excellent; the game does not restrict you significantly, you choose where to go. There are different abilities you unlock as you progress, which adds variety to the gameplay. Also, the story is fairly deep, and isn't clearly explained; it's something you have to piece together (or look up on the now-archived wiki, which has a surprising amount of lore). Ultimately, I wish this game had been more successful, as it seems like the devs had big plans for the universe they created.
AMAZING GAME. pros: music boss fights world visuals cons: backtracking and layout to confusing overall: one of the best games i played this year. I REALLY hope this game gets more attention in the future. ps on youtube i could only find 4 videos on this game. so please give this game more love.
Resolutiion is an excellent indie game with a striking pixel art style and an atmospheric, mysterious world that pulled me in right away. The visuals are vibrant and a little odd in the best way, and the soundtrack really complements the surreal vibe. I enjoyed exploring the world — it's full of strange tech and interesting looking characters. While I personally would've liked a bit more narrative clarity, that may have clashed with the cryptic narrative approach chosen. I did get stuck in one area for a while, which was a bit frustrating circling around the map, but overall, it didn’t take away what I enjoyed about the game. It’s clear a lot of love went into this. If you enjoy artful, slightly abstract indie games with style and substance, Resolutiion is absolutely worth your time.
