I don’t know about ASa Project anymore. They did the excellent Sankaku Renai, the okay Koikari, and now this one, which might just be my least favorite of the bunch.
Story & Writing
So basically, the whole thing with this one is that a sudden childhood friend shows up, confesses to the main character, and ignites a battle royale amongst the other heroines, all vying for the protag’s love. It’s pretty much your standard love rivalry setup, nothing too fancy. ASa Project, the studio behind the game, is generally pretty good on the comedy front though and that’s usually what sets their games apart. For this one though… I can’t say they pulled through with it. You’ve got the perverted heroine that just becomes annoying, the constant onslaught of crude jokes that make the game feel like it was written by a middle schooler, and the whole battle royale thing has each heroine practically obsessed with the main character to the point of stalking and that being played off as a comedic thing just feels weird. They went overboard on the comedy this time, to the point that the main story suffers. In fact, it’s hard to even see the main story here. Most of the common route is just various conversations between side characters, a lot of the time with the protagonist nowhere in sight. This can work if the characters are actually decent, but most have their one quirk that they practically embody and that is all you know them by. This doesn’t make for likable heroines, unfortunately.
Protagonist
The bigger issue though is that very main character. This is one of the flattest main characters I have ever seen in a romcom visual novel. The dude has no personality. No defining characteristics. He’s like a blank slate inserted into the story just so these heroines have a reason to exist. When he is with the heroines, he is just going with the flow and letting things happen. I know some romcom VNs like to create blank main characters to use as self-inserts, but this one is really pushing it.
Character Routes
Then there’s the character routes. As typical for this studio, they’re not the greatest. The romance comes across as shallow because the characters themselves are shallow and I would argue that a good chunk of each route, if not most of each route, are written with H-scenes in mind and the rest of the writing around that just kinda serves as filler. If you’re looking for a visual novel with good romance writing, this one is not it. If you’re just looking for an extension of the game’s comedic elements, then maybe you’ll get some enjoyment out of the routes.
Visuals & Music
The game at least has some decent visuals. I mean, it’s nothing too fancy, but the character designs are nicely done, I liked the brighter colors this game goes for, and the music isn’t grating - which is more than I can say for some others in the genre.
Settings
That and the game does a good job with its settings, giving us all the usuals plus some nice bonuses, like animation speeds. On a technical level, it’s pretty good, even if the max resolution caps out at 1600x900.
Overall
That said, I did not enjoy my time with this one and cannot say I recommend it. As someone that generally enjoys comedy visual novels, this one was a bit too over the top in that regard and felt like it was written by a teenager. The actual character routes suffer as a result and of course, none of this is benefitted by how flat the main character is either. It’s good on the technical level and with its presentation, but there are far better visual novels out there worth your time. After reading every translated Asa Project visual novel up to this point and revisiting a few routes that I hadn't finished yet, my conclusion is that Renai Royale is my overall second favorite Asa Project VN, behind Sankaku. In terms of humor, I think Renai Royale is overall the funniest, consistently and constantly having the type of humor we've come to know Asa Project for: a mix of weird, wacky, over-the-top characters making stupid jokes and savage roasts at each other while still having occasional interesting enough melodrama at times. Most Asa Project visual novels usually have some kind of unique gimmick like 0 Kilometer's family swap, Sankaku having everybody in a nerd club, Karigurashi having everyone be childhood friends, Koikari's rent-a-boyfriend premise, and the two-timing thing in Futamata. However, in a weird way, Royale by not having a particularly standout premise—just basically all the main heroines constantly catfighting over the main protagonist even more so than usual (where it's typically maybe one or two heroines at each other's throats)—feels refreshing. Royale basically has all the heroines in love from the beginning and openly fighting with each other. Surprisingly, there aren't that many moege where the heroines are already in love with the main character from the start and handle it well, but I think Royale does a surprisingly good job with it. Said catfighting along with the crazy humor definitely helps make the common routes stand out a lot. They give a surprisingly good amount of screen time to every character, even the side heroines. You can use the common route to figure out which heroine has the most appealing personality, backstory, or humor style because they all have their different styles of humor: Mari's overconfidence in being a childhood friend, Shione just being kind of a dumb rich girl, Nonoka being an insane snarky brocon, and Renna being a two-faced idol with insecurity issues. Yuna, a side heroine being the protagonist's ex-girlfriend for a while, is also something fairly unique for a moege. However, the humor and the heroines' constant catfighting is the visual novel's greatest strength and its greatest weakness. Despite the stupid, insane comments and constant roasting being really funny, if you're one of those people who expects this type of stuff to stop once you get on a heroine route… it does not. In fact, you could argue the heroines get even more savage, many trying really hard to get with the main character despite already being in a relationship. I've come to not mind this since this type of comedy is mostly why I'm all in for Asa Project VNs, but if you're someone who prefers it when the route almost purely becomes about the heroine, then you're probably not going to like the routes much in Royale. Asa Project titles already are a little bit on the short side compared to other moege, and while Royale does attempt to have some interesting melodrama around things like Mari being the MC's first crush, Shione and her relationship with her maid Ao, Renna being second fiddle as an idol to Yuna, etc., I find that they in a way feel more like distractions from the humor since the melodrama doesn't really go all in on actually developing the characters (with a few exceptions). Many times the mood gets “ruined” by going back to the comedy in some way or the heroines trying to jump in and take the protagonist away from the relationship as said above. Like I said, I don't mind this type of writing that much, but it does kind of hurt the VN in a way where I can only really like it but not super love it because it basically only has comedy going for it, arguably in excess, to the point where the melodrama that's there I just can't take seriously. It's unfortunate since Asa Project does have melodrama that's actually done consistently well like in 0 Kilometer or Futamata, but I just don't think Royale quite got there. But despite those complaints, I still really like Royale and not only think it's the funniest Asa Project VN, but one of the funniest visual novels I've ever read, which is saying a lot. I would heavily recommend Royale for the comedy alone, but you have to like its style. It's definitely not your usual moege harem-style comedy, almost feeling like the Japanese version of South Park with how douchey everybody is to each other. There is still enough heart and characterization to make the characters feel like actual people, but you just have to be ready for them to constantly be at each other's throats for comedy.

I like the girl who says Harrumph alot. On a serious note,
Save Yuna's route for last
!!!
aSa Project, has let me down.... I played Koikari before playing through Renai Royale, and Koikari was much better. Had I played Renai Royale first, I would never have played another aSa Project VN. The story is 90% main route, Every character specific Route feels very rushed, the character designs are alright and the overall main story is intriguing enough to make you stick through it. The endings just leave a bad taste in my mouth. I just about 100% koikari, I got through 2 endings of Renai and wanted to explode my head via 500 metal pipes falling on my head. aSa Project do better please, so I don't have to die.
Play for Yuna Since most of the time, the heroines are just arguing with each other or busy being a comedian, the story aspect of this game is kind of weak comparing to the other ASa project's work. But it is unique and funny experience nonetheless.
