This breaks my heart to leave a "not recommended" review for this, because it should be literally everything I love in game form. I was patiently waiting until it was close to 1.0 to try it because I was SO excited and didn't want to ruin it by playing an unfinished version, especially when the initial EA reviews weren't great. I thought I was safe getting it a few weeks before full release and taking some time to catch up, but oh my god this game is so freaking buggy, and not the cute janky early access bugs, the game breaking, unable to progress, lose your save file type bugs. I want to be clear that the vibes in Reka are IMMACULATE - the autumnal atmosphere, the crows cawing, lighting candles with your magic and performing rituals... all of it is just perfect. But I fear that the immaculate vibes are by far the best part of this game. Within the first 20 minutes I met a bug that meant a door that should have been open was closed and I couldn't progress, so I had to load a previous save. It happens I guess. Then about 2.5hrs in I became stuck in a dialogue window, unable to close it, and had to alt f4. That seemingly corrupted my save file and I had to once again load a previous save, but this was annoying for two reasons - one, I googled the problem I was having and saw it has existed for 2yrs+, and two, there is no autosave for some reason so I lost a LOT of progress. Those were just the gamebreaking bugs, although I've also encountered invisible NPCs, people and items glitching through the floor, bugged quests, and all of these issues made me look past the excellent vibe and evaluate what I was actually doing in this game. I realised on reflection that the vibe was carrying a lacklustre game. Every area you travel to looks the same, all the NPCs look the same, and every village has the same buildings with the same layouts. The house building and decorating is decent, but could definitely use some polish considering it's such a selling point of the game. I feel like I was kinda catfished for the first hour or so by the intro quests because they were excellent, immersive and interesting, but after the first 2 zones the quality is not the same at all imo. It might be that the latest update introduced a lot of bugs, but as this is my only experience with the game, I can't in good conscience recommend it in it's current state. I will definitely check back for future updates, maybe playing a little bit every now and then so the repetition doesn't get to me. I want to love it so badly, and the immersion and atmosphere is amazing, but everything else just fell flat for me.

While I do still like and recommend this game, I do think that the devs have gotten a bit lost in their community pandering. The discord is a lively hive of brilliant creators and builders of amazing chicken-houses, and the devs add a lot of extra stuff to the game on the regular, but it seems the story progression and actual game development have kind of fallen by the wayside. I hope the team regathers their motivation to actually finish this game because it is such a good start. But it needs a stronger direction and some tougher leadership to get finished because hardly anything has changed since I tried this game for the first time 2 years ago. Something about bootstraps, devs. Let's go, I believe you can do this.
If you like to build, or, you get motion sickness from video games, DO NOT BOTHER. There are no settings to alleviate motion sickness, and the game is constantly spinning the camera view (example: open any storage chest). When you finally settle in and start really building your house, the build controls are so wonky that you will never be able to snap a simple roof to anything. The theme and story are fantastic. I really tried to make it work. The nausea coupled with inability to build is just ruins everything.
Reka is by far a stand-out pagan/witchcraft game; the concept is utterly fantastic. I enjoy how in-depth the spellcrafting and magic system is, the environment is beautiful, it has all the desirables of a cozy crafting game and overall I'd recommend it. The statements I have about the game below are personal and, quite frankly, blunt; However, I do truly hope that they inspire creativity rather than discouragement. This is both for the devs and also anyone considering buying the game. That being said, there are some pretty big issues with the game itself; additionally I have some comments about the gameplay mechanics, quality of life and content. Regarding the game itself: It's extremely buggy still. I've been playing for a little over two years now, almost 200 hours in. Some quests don't load, sometimes my cursor doesn't register that I'm selecting an item or it will over-select items I'm trying to pick up (which can be a problem later when trying to collect wood). Objects get stuck in the environment including the chicken hut and even npc collisions are an occasional nightmare. I was really looking forward to building a house but the way building materials/objects interact is abysmal and does not function half of the time unless you're trying to make the house a simple square block; larger builds are doable given you have the patience of a saint or don't care about the bugs (I have tried larger builds numerously with mediocre success). The amount of times I've had to restart a game just to try and make any progress is likely in the 40's, which I would consider egregious at best. Regarding gameplay (mechanics): - I appreciate the evolution the controls have had over the past couple years, however it feels like they've become convoluted at this point; It's as though the devs have tried to reinvent a wheel for the sake of uniqueness when in reality they just need to be uniform, intuitive and functional. The multiple scroll wheels are clunky, have become over-complicated and are effectively visual clutter, not to mention the opposite of intuitive. There's almost too many options to choose from, I personally believe that either a V Rising item/sorting system, custom button mapping, or simply having things sorted by the numbers on the keyboard (think Stardew) would be more beneficial in terms of gameplay and visual polish than whatever the hell the wheels have going on right now. - A better or more polished targeting system would be great for the crows. It's way too sensitive now with no definitive way to specify what you're trying to grab using them; I've been punished by Leshy more than enough times for accidentally picking wood when I was trying to get even a single raspberry. I'm still putting my thoughts together on what a good replacement would be for this system. - Having world events would be such a major boon to this game. I want to see the NPCs having holidays and learning about more Slavic folklore through them as well as Baba Yaga. Also, it'd be fun to see Baba Yaga interacting with the hut in small ways instead of just sitting forever. If the character is supposed to learn from her, I'd like her to be a legitimate resource or a character that's fun to talk too in all her grumpy glory instead of the same 3 dialogue options all the time. There is little to no motivation to talk to her at all. Regarding gameplay (quality of life-ish): - These are more personal gripes. After the first trial, the NPCs are all the same. The world, while cosmetically beautiful, is near-devoid of life. There is little to no drive to explore the world, and I feel like such a visually rich environment should have more care taken to it, Slavic folklore has so many fun things that could be added (I'd love a quest about summoning a Domovyk to NPC houses!). It doesn't feel like there's a reason to interact with anything other than the quests and I'm dying to see more of what the environment and NPCs can offer. Also, having different biomes would be amazing, not just the occasional wetlands that can be hard to traverse and have their own unique bugs. - I'd like there to be an over-arching, slightly more definitive storyline along with the quests Baba Yaga sets you on. Outside of quests, there's no motivation to talk to NPC villagers other than for basic fetch quests that get boring very quickly. Each new location is all the same, the villages are not unique and Id love to see some different layouts for that as well, everything is copy paste at the moment and it turns me off of playing after about an hour. - A more developed character creator would be very fun. I do not see a reason for items to be locked. I'd like to see the devs add more Salvic folklore based quests, flesh out the NPCs, put more time in on the controls, stop copy/pasting absolutely everything and most importantly, take their time with the game. The concept is so amazing and I can tell how much love has gone into it, but it's current state comes across as an unfinished idea with somewhat aimless direction, it feels rushed. I do still recommend the game, though. To me, it is worth the $20 for a work-in-progress game that has a truly unique concept/story with so much room to grow.
let me preference, i really really want this game to succeed. but is absolutely nowhere near polished enough for a full release!! every time there is a new update i start a new save, and every time the same exact same bugs pop up. its been years now. with the latest update the frame rate has broken. merchant vanishing, animals spawning inside of scenery, random tiles in the house not allowing to be built on for no reason, turning your house into an asymmetrical mess. also it is missing some utterly frustrating quality of life updates. things like how am i supposed to tell what is a large or small meal? when you get an item you have to click thru a pop up every single time, despite the fact you have collect them before. having to have all cooking items on you to use, despite the ingredients being in your house. also the random generation is buck wild, you get houses hanging off of cliffs, bridges spawning on top of boats, trees floating in the air. every single update has been a disappointment. what is the point of new content if the game barely works at all? i do not recommend it until its in a better state.
Unfortunately, experienced an unplayable bug about an hour in (lighting the candles). Could not progress the game at all. After, game would not start - stuck on loading dependencies.
My review: This game is amazing in my personal opinion, there is building, exploration, magic, and overall fun. Yes its buggy, no its not abandoned, yes you will have fun if you give it patience. For the negative, whiny complaints: Y'all, it says "Note: Games in Early Access are not complete and may or may not change further. If you are not excited to play this game in its current state, then you should wait to see if the game progresses further in development.", in layman's terms, hold your freaking horses, its NOT a COMPLETE game. Its in development, youre going to see bugs and game breaking issues, which ARE worked on. This game is going into 1.0 soon and will continue to be updated, GIVE DEVS SOME PATIENCE AND GRACE. Give it a chance, and if you don't like it, don't write "ItS BuGgY Weeeh wOe Is mE", just speak what you don't like, get off your soap box and find a triple A game that is completely finished because EA games by indie/solo devs are NOT for you. The whining is really annoying in these indie/solo dev, Early Access review sections. (And i say DEVELOPER, not the publisher. This is literally the devs only game dawg.)
The game has almost everything I’m looking for---playing as a witch, building a house, going on adventures, and an interesting storyline. There’s honestly so much potential here, which makes the bugs even more disappointing. Every time I reach the end of a mission or start a new one, the game suddenly freezes and won’t let me save my progress. I’ve had to go back to my last save point and restart the entire mission, only to discover that some things were missing during the first cutscene. It’s just so disappointing because I’ve really been looking forward to playing this game. It has so much potential, but the bugs are making it really difficult to enjoy. I genuinely hope these issues get fixed because I really want to love this game. :(((
It's a creative and fantastical concept for a game, but it is so buggy that I have to exit out of the game and start it up again multiple times in one play through. Also the settings for audio don't work for me, so even if I mute all sounds it is still deafeningly loud. I love the art and idea of it all, just wish it was more flushed out.
Played for 4 hrs. Got to the 2nd map and saved to come back later. Game now crashing when trying to load that save. Those first 4 hours were pretty buggy, but mostly stuff you can play around, just really sloppy and clashing with the otherwise great vibe the game has visually and thematically. I had held off from getting this after their demo before they went into EA because it was so rough and figured this close to 1.0 it would be in better shape. The performance vs fidelity is still way off as well. Nah, just as janky and with the crash on save load I just can't recommend it. Edit: Even the bug submission form is erroring out and I am unable to provide the save and pc info. Granted they are using a 3rd party for this so hopefully they can get that resolved as well. Sheesh. Edit 2: So I rolled back to an autosave in the 1st map and got to progress into the 2nd area. After spending almost 2 hrs there I got softlocked in a dialog with the Elder Lutk and lost all that progress. How is there still critical blockers in the main path after 2 years?! FFS
