It's not a bad game I guess. It just feels like it's tried to do too much compared to the original two games... and yet not enough. The originals were simple and punchy. Pick choices, try balance the stats and try not to die. This one has that, but it's weird, sometimes one of the categories will break, but you can still rescue the ship and not die. I haven't actually failed yet, I'm guessing you need multiple (maybe all?) categories to go too low or high? It also has a buying mechanic where you need to earn cash and get stuff to fix or upgrade items. The main way you do that is by "playing" a guitar through a psychedelic tunnel which is barely interesting the first time and then gets repetative and I wish it could just be skipped. It has a visiting new worlds section which is good, and I think they really should have leaned a lot further into the exploration mechanic if they were going to change up the game, but instead you just go from point to point along a path without anything really exciting happening on most. I really wanted to like this game, but it's not very engaging for me at least. I might play a bit further and see if it improves, but quite disappointed so far.
Like some other negative reviews said, it's just too much compared to the other games. It tried to be like a complex RPG with minigames while Reigns is known to be loved by it's simplicity. Personally I think that this game could've been better if they ditch this "3D thinking" it was really frustrating, and hard to navigate, while also being uninteresting. I would only recommend you to play this game if you have played and loved ALL of the Reigns games, and your favourite movie of all time is Space Odyssey.

Reigns: Beyond, developed by Nerial and published by Devolver Digital, expands on the distinctive swipe-based decision-making gameplay that the Reigns series is known for, transporting players into a fresh and imaginative sci-fi setting. Instead of the traditional medieval kingdom backdrop, this installment places you at the helm of an interstellar indie rock band, navigating a quirky and often chaotic universe filled with bizarre characters, cosmic adventures, and plenty of humor. The game skillfully blends narrative-driven choices with resource management and space exploration, creating an experience that feels both familiar to series veterans and accessible to newcomers. The core mechanic of Reigns: Beyond remains the card-swipe system, where players must make decisions by swiping left or right on a wide variety of cards, each representing encounters, dilemmas, or events. However, this time these choices affect more than just the wellbeing of a kingdom; they influence the band’s cohesion, resources, ship health, and crew relationships. This integration of strategic management with branching storylines adds layers of complexity and replayability. With over 1,400 unique cards, every playthrough offers new challenges and narrative twists, keeping the experience fresh and engaging. Alongside decision-making, players also engage in mini-games such as space combat sequences, further diversifying gameplay and breaking up the rhythm of card-swiping. Visually, Reigns: Beyond is striking, employing a stylized comic book art style that combines stark black-and-white graphics with occasional bursts of vivid color. This aesthetic complements the game’s rock-and-roll and sci-fi themes, creating a memorable and atmospheric world that feels both retro and modern. The art direction is matched by an energetic soundtrack composed by Sam Webster, whose music perfectly captures the rebellious spirit of the band and the vastness of space, immersing players further into the game’s vibe. Narratively, the game shines through its quirky characters and humor, which range from sarcastic AI assistants to eccentric alien species. The dialogue and scenarios are cleverly written, often poking fun at sci-fi clichés while also delivering heartfelt moments about friendship, ambition, and the trials of life on the road—albeit in space. However, the game’s minimalistic interface and limited tutorials might pose a slight learning curve for some players, as the open-ended nature of choices can sometimes lead to confusion without much guidance. Critically, Reigns: Beyond has garnered a mixed reception. Many players appreciate the novel setting and the combination of mechanics, praising its charm, wit, and depth. Yet, others have noted that the gameplay loop may feel repetitive over longer sessions, and the lack of clear direction could discourage those who prefer more structured storytelling. Still, for fans of narrative-driven games and those intrigued by the series’ signature mechanics, Reigns: Beyond offers a rewarding experience with plenty of room for exploration and experimentation. Overall, Reigns: Beyond is a creative and refreshing evolution of the Reigns formula, taking the beloved swipe-to-decide gameplay into a new, interstellar frontier. It challenges players to balance strategy, story, and survival as they lead their band through the cosmos, all while wrapped in a visually captivating and musically vibrant package. While it may not be perfect in every aspect, its ambitious blend of style and substance makes it a compelling choice for gamers seeking an unconventional adventure with heart and humor. Rating: 8/10
This and the first Reigns game are the best. Fun, short and sweet. Lots of sci-fi references, cool side quests, the indie rock scene is booming even on Saturn!
"Grab a controller". We are on a PC. We want to be able to properly use our keyboards and mouse. Besides, not for me.
