Regrowth is a challenging puzzle game that have a simple, cute graphic style. It lead to the first impression that it will be a easy game but it isn't. I would say it is, as far as i played it, at medium difficulty. Sometimes it is easy going, sometimes it is harder. Right now i would say a few levels have a tiny problem with the difficulty because the levels before and after are easier. All nothing dramatic but needs a few tries more as expected. The tries are partly 20 - 25 seconds sitting around and see if the 5 - 10 sec., when you done something, will bring the expected or wished result. That "boring" waiting time is the biggest con that i see in the game. I am sure the dev will think about ways to make that waiting time shorter or more interesting for the player. The developer are nice and have always a open ear for bugs, suggestions and different other things. He is very dedicated and highly motivated to work on the game, the rough edges and the suggestions in general. The contact with him is very nice and bring a lot of, positive, results in a short time. As examples, implemented features, changes at the music and a few levels. The german translation is good and the game offer from the begin 22 languages. That is much more as the most other games offer at the begin.
Pro's:
+ Good made puzzle game + Partly fresh mechanics + Very dedicated and motivated Dev
Con's:
- Partly, boring, waiting times of 20 - 25 sec. (each try) - The music [but the dev said he will bring, soon, at least one more track into the game]
Conclusion:
From my point of view it's a safe buy for puzzle fans, that want to support a solo dev that done a good job and are very dedicated and highly motivated to make the game as good as possible in the next weeks/months. I think it brings a fresh wind with a few of the mechanics and don't deliver the common stuff that you see in "each" game. In the end i had fun with it but a few boring, waiting, moments too. I am not able to write now something about the price because i need more review/play time to see how long the game is and i need to see if the difficulty change later drastical. I will edit this Review as soon as i have played the game for a few hours more and maybe after the soon coming updates/changes.
Rating:

Right now 6/10
Soon for sure at least 7/10. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0y77hQht6jE
A review copy was provided by the developer.

Follow my Curator page, Fruit N Doggie Reviews, so you can be updated whenever I post a new review.

Overall Rating - Seriously Flawed ★★☆☆☆

First Impressions
When first looking at the previews of Regrowth (RG), it reminded me of a game I played on Kongregate a few years ago called colorzzle. At least, from what I initially remembered, though after double-checking how that game actually works, it's not very similar after all. Regardless, my mistaken memory was enough to catch my interest, so I wound up getting a review copy to see how green of a thumb I had and whether I could save these arid islands.
Gameplay
The quote, “Water, water everywhere, but not a drop to drink,” seems rather fitting in this puzzle game, as though each island is surrounded by water, they're all drying out and sinking into the ocean. You have to manage the limited resources available, while keeping track of your time limit, to grow a set amount of grass to keep the island lush and intact. As the grass grows, it gives you points you'll trade in for items to set the island up to maintain the most amount of grass possible, making the grass both a resource and objective. The tools at your disposal include grass seed, flowers, irrigation pipes, and a rain bucket. It's up to you to decide which items available to you are placed and at what time, as location, timing, and sequence are all quite important. While progressing in the game, new mechanics are introduced to switch up how you go about meeting your grass growing objective. Weather-based ones are helpful, as rain hydrates every tile, while the wind carries over viable grass seed to other tiles. These events are marked on the time bar, including the direction the wind will blow, giving an idea of where you'll need to start growing the grass and where it'll end up. An example of an obstacle is the snail, whereas the helpful bee will travel from one ready to pollinate tile to the next. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2471194583
Controls
RG is controlled with a mouse and keyboard, which is the most efficient method as opposed to what a controller could offer. The mouse is used to check the range of items such as how many tiles a pool of water effects, and is used to place all the tools you use. There's shortcut keys available to select the next tool you'll place, by hitting the assigned numbers shown at the bottom of the screen.
Story
The game opens with an introduction including an earth deity named Deimos who's up in arms over the actions of water and fire spirits trying to resolve global warming with some kind of treaty. Deimos thinks such an arrangement is unnecessary, and with you not promptly agreeing with him, boots you far away as a traitor. No further story elements are shown as you play, and it's not much of a story, but it serves as enough glue to give the gameplay some direction and purpose. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2471194870
Visuals
There's not much variety in the game's visuals, as it consists of the same setting and materials throughout, so you'll always be staring at desert islands and small patches of grass desperate to survive. A few mechanics provide some novelty, such as the bee and snail, but more could have been done to keep the visuals fresh and engaging. RG uses an isometic view, which can be confusing with some games as to which way an arrow key will move. However, since the controls don't function that way, the angle isn't a detriment in this case.
Sound Design
The sound balancing seems to be out of whack in RG, as it's very inconsistent. The opening title screen can be quite loud, as well as the overworld, but when actually in one of the puzzles, the music is hard to hear. From what I've noticed of it, there's only a single song in the entire game. Although it's a calm, string-based track, it's not enough to last for several hours, so muting it and playing your own might be a better option. I didn't notice any issues with the sound effects, as there are audio cues when plants hit a growth cycle.
Pros
🌟 Although it seems similar to other puzzle games, vaguely akin to something like the water management of Wetrix for the Nintendo 64, RG is its own kind of puzzle game. The unique aspect of it is enjoyable. 🌟 The developer has been consistently responding to feedback and revising the game accordingly. 🌟 If you get stuck on a level, you have the ability to skip it and keep playing.
Cons
❌ Nuances of the game's mechanics aren't fully explained. For instance, the snail that eats grass can clip the same patch multiple times, and it'll remain viable and spread to connecting tiles even if it looks too short. However, if the originating patch of grass in a cluster is destroyed, its off-shoots will be obliterated by the snail. ❌ Although you have to determine the correct order of operations, with how destructive dry tiles are, you don't have a lot of viable moves. Finding the correct solution might still elude you, but many options aren't even possible, so figuring out what to do is all the more frustrating. ❌ You don't have direct control over the timer, which means that if you accidentally go too far, you have to restart the puzzle from the beginning. You also can't fast forward past areas that you don't care about. My play time would be a lot shorter otherwise. ❌ The way the puzzles are constructed in RG doesn't seem to offer as much flexibility or creativity as other games. New mechanics are introduced often but don't tinker with the island shapes very much, and none of them show up for very long.
Tips
🔍 Timing is very important in RG, so pausing the action when grass flourishes or a flower blooms often proves necessary in order to get everything done fast enough. I've cleared many puzzles within the last couple of seconds, and not placing an item early enough would have led to failure. 🔍 Knowing what your target is can help determine whether your current strategy is in the right general direction, or if you're missing the mark somehow. Honestly, knowing that I'm quite a bit off can help me try something entirely different, but when I'm just shy of the goal, I get stumped. 🔍 Sometimes, the title of the puzzle can give some inspiration as to something you can try. You are able to place an item on top of another, replacing it, and that was necessary a couple of times.
Final Thoughts
With only 1 game mode, and approximately 48 puzzles, there isn't much to hold your attention in RG. You can try out the level editor or play others' puzzles, but in spite of a handful of different mechanics, they don't change the gameplay enough to be that engaging. This is especially true with regards to the size and shape of the islands you keep playing on. For the gameplay to work as well as other puzzle games, I think it would need to change the biomes of the land masses so new puzzle mechanics could be implemented. Examples that come to mind would be a forest setting where grass grows more easily, permafrost that'd resist growth, and so on. If more of the game was well polished, and there was more versatility in the puzzles' layout and map design, I would likely recommend RG, even though I often got stumped. However, it's not to the level I'd suggest playing it.
Looking at the screenshots this seemed like quite a fun puzzle game, but it's just not. The main mechanic isn't that enjoyable, and the fact that you have to spend between 30-60 seconds per level just to see that your attempt didn't work is just annoying. Can only recommend if you have the patience of a saint.
★★★✯☆
This is a really fun little puzzle game :). The objective is to get enough grass occupying the landscape as possible before the levels timer runs out. The challenge comes with all the things you need to keep an eye out for and manage, starting with only allowing you to plant grass, then plants that generate resources, pipes to funnel the water to where you want it, and then all the environmental variables like the way the ground dries, the wind blows, the snail and bees later on as well. Overall the game is simple but also challenging, you need to grasp the logic before you will be able to finish the game's puzzles :). The experience is definitely worth the price :) 3.5/5, I definitely recommend this :).
Take some time off and relax
Regrowth is a game that I could enjoy even when i had little time to myself. The various mechanics - which on their own look pretty simple and self explanatory- and layouts of the puzzles make for an intriguing and often challenging experience. Quite often changing mindsets and/or gradual optimisation were the keys to solving the levels, and it gives the player a good amount of satisfaction each time it all finally comes together. I think these kind of puzzle games are a nice way to keep ones mind thinking on simpler things for a while, in a cute, relaxing atmosphere, so I'd definitely it recommend for anyone.

It's not everyday I get to play a puzzler that feels new to me, but Regrowth did, somehow. It's difficult to categorize -- in a weird way, it's almost like a very (very) stripped-down, time-based programming puzzle in the spirit of Opus Magnum. But it's less analytical and it won't make you hate yourself quite so much. Your aim on each level is to get enough patches of grass planted and grown up within a time limit. This takes time, so you need to get seeds down as soon as you can, and keep them watered; once they grow they'll automatically re-seed adjacent cells too, but then they'll need water if you want to save them, etc. Watering cells on the map isn't just necessary to make cells seed-ready and to make grass grow, it's also required to prevent cells from drying out and dropping into the ocean, never to return. Your resources are limited, so you need to get choosey about when/where to plant grass (which you need to win) vs. flowers (which bring in more resources for you more quickly) and infrastructure (like pipes to carry water). There are a few additional mechanics that can get added in -- like rain, or wind that picks up/moves seeds, or bees that you need to attract to pollinate your plants, or snails that eat your plants. These generally appear in "branches"/sets of levels that explore each mechanic one at a time, rather than stacking them all up. Visual presentation is fine, though a little bland. Audio leaves something to be desired: only the single track you hear in the trailer. But the real draw is gameplay: there are easily ~6-8 hours of solid, challenging content here, perhaps more. I'd say it's worth the pickup. When I initially posted this review I noted a couple quality of life issues, but these have now been addressed: there are new Undo and speed select options that should help address some frustration, since you can't really tell what will work until you press "play" and allow time to pass; experimentation should now be more simple. Here (unlike Opus Magnum) the interface for planning out the timing of events is not explicit: you don't get to program and fiddle with very fine-grained, annotated, timelines of when events will occur. You plant the grass and know that it will take "a while" to grow, but there's no indication on the timeline of when it will happen. You could time it out yourself if you want but, instead, on most levels the difficulty is pretty well-balanced so that while you learn to intuitively "feel" what will probably work and what won't without getting too precise about it, you do still run into challenges that force you to re-calibrate your intuitions; if you find yourself re-starting a lot on a level, you're probably not taking a winning approach and should try something else, but it often takes some serious thought to get outside your own head and come up with something new. Many levels can be passed in multiple ways. The narrative is very thin and feels a bit pasted-on. The final level is presented as a "boss battle" but it's really just a (mostly interesting) twist on the "grow stuff" mechanics. Despite that disconnect, core gameplay made me more than a little obsessed, in a good way. See Settings here: resolution options, sliders, windowed/fullscreen. Has a workshop where you can build your own levels and play levels others have made (though the level editor is a bit clunky). Take a look and think about chucking it on the wishlist: you might be skeptical at base price, but it's definitely worth picking up with a modest discount if you like this style of game.
I have been playing Regrowth for 2 days, and I love it! Its the perfect way to calm down after your annoying teammates made you angry in Counter Strike or LoL. As far as I unlocked the levels, they are challenging, but not impossible, so the game gives me the feeling of success, and I forget my problems. Fortunately there are many levels, so I wont be angry for a while! :D
Very cool puzzle game. I love the story and the little monster at the start. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fm9hiyFyZiE
